Yaka­ta is a grape-grow­ing and wine­mak­ing as­so­ci­a­tion which in­cor­po­rates, in the ca­pac­i­ty of its mem­bers, wineries of the re­gion of the Ro­dop­s­ka Ya­ka (the Rho­do­pean Col­lar). This is an area at the foot of the Rho­dope Moun­tains, or the sun­lit strip of land that stretch­es along the moun­tains – from the riv­er Chaya to the riv­er Vacha, and south of the riv­er Mar­it­sa to the Rho­dope Moun­tains. The re­gion is char­ac­ter­ized by spe­cif­ic pe­cu­liar­i­ties of soil and cli­mate, which distin­guish it from the rest of the wine-pro­duc­ing re­gions. It owes its unique­ness to the com­bi­na­tion of such fac­tors as the struc­ture of our soils, tem­per­a­ture, air hu­mid­i­ty and amount of rain­fall. Th­ese fac­tors are sig­ni­f­i­cant­ly in­flu­enced by both the ge­o­graph­i­cal lo­ca­tion in the south of Bul­garia and the proxim­i­ty to the Rho­dope Moun­tains, the Mediter­ranean Sea etc.The ter­ri­to­ry cov­ered by Yaka­ta was dif­fer­en­ti­at­ed as a mi­crore­gion with ex­cep­tio­n­al­ly favourable con­di­tions for de­vel­op­ment of wine-pro­duc­tion as ear­ly as 1996 by an in­ter­na­tio­n­al team of sci­en­tists in­clud­ing the French ex­pert Prof. D-r Jean-Claude Jac­quinet, with the sup­port of the Unit­ed Na­tions and the Min­istry of Agri­cul­ture of the Re­public of Bul­garia. How­ev­er, it was not then that the his­to­ry of our re­gion be­gan. Ac­tu­al­ly, the foun­da­tions were laid 5,000 years ago when the Thra­cians made wine in th­ese lands – a fact that rates us among one of the first wine-pro­duc­ing re­gions in the world.

Our ob­jec­tive is, by means of as­so­ci­a­tion of the wineries in Yaka­ta, to be able to pre­sent to our clients’ at­ten­tion a re­gion with a dif­fer­ence - more spe­cif­ic and dif­fer­en­ti­at­ed, a re­gion that would guar­an­tee the prop­er­ties of the wine of­fered on the grounds of strict mem­ber­ship cri­te­ria, among which are the fol­low­ing: pos­ses­sion of own win­ery in Yaka­ta, pos­ses­sion of own vine­yards within the boun­daries of Yaka­ta, pro­duc­tion of wine main­tain­ing the high­est pos­si­ble stan­dards and un­com­pro­mis­ing­ly high qual­i­ty.

Як­ата е ло­за­ро-ви­нарс­ко сдруже­ние, в което чле­ну­ват из­би в райо­на на Ро­допс­ка Яка. То­ва е мест­н­ост в под­н­ожие­то на Ро­допи­те или слън­ч­е­вата ив­и­ца, коя­то се про­с­ти­ра по продълже­ние на пла­ни­ната. От р. Чая до р. Въ­ча и на юг от р. Ма­р­и­ца до Ро­допи­те.

Хар­ак­т­ер­и­зи­ра се със специфич­ни почв­е­но-климат­ич­ни осо­бе­но­с­ти, кои­то я от­л­и­ч­а­ват от други­те ви­но­прои­з­в­о­ди­т­ел­ни регио­ни. То­ва са ком­б­и­нация от фак­т­ори като: структ­ур­ата на наши­те почви, темпер­ат­у­ра, влаж­н­ост на въз­ду­ха, вал­ежи, за кои­то имат влия­ние ка­к­то географс­кото ни мес­топо­л­оже­ние в Юж­на Българ­ия, така и бл­из­остта на Ро­допи­те, Сре­ди­зем­но мо­ре зад тях и други.Тер­ит­ор­ия­та, коя­то об­х­ваща Як­ата е обо­со­бе­на като мик­ро-регион с осо­бе­но под­х­о­дящи услов­ия за разв­и­ване на ви­но­прои­з­в­одс­тво още през 1996 г. от меж­д­у­н­ар­о­ден нау­чен екип, вк­люч­в­ащ френс­кият експерт проф. Жан-Клод Жак­ине с подк­репата на ООН и Ми­нис­терс­тво на Земе­де­лие­то на Р. Българ­ия. Ис­тор­ия­та на нашия регион дал­еч не започ­ва от тога­ва, а още пре­ди 5000 г. когато по наши­те земи са прои­зв­еж­д­а­ли ви­но Тра­к­и­те. То­ва ни прави и един от първи­те ви­но­прои­з­в­о­ди­т­ел­ни регио­ни в света.

Наша­та цел е чрез обе­ди­не­ние на из­б­и­те в Як­ата да пред­л­ожим на клиент­и­те си един по-конк­ре­тен, обо­со­бен регион, който да гар­ант­и­ра хар­ак­т­ер­и­с­т­и­к­и­те на предлага­ното ви­но на ба­зата на строги кри­т­ер­ии за членс­тво. Сред те­зи кри­т­ер­ии са: при­т­ежа­ние на собс­тве­на из­ба в Як­ата, при­т­ежа­ние на собс­тве­ни ло­зя в рам­к­и­те на Як­ата, прои­з­в­одс­тво на ви­но по най-ви­со­к­и­те съществу­ващи стан­д­арти и безк­омпромист­н­ост в ка­ч­ес­твото.

Bulgarian wines increasingly known for quality

When it comes to top quality wines, Bulgaria might not be the first country that comes to mind. But winemaking is a centuries-old tradition in the southeastern corner of Europe.
Now, as their grape vines grow older, Bulgarian winemakers are building a solid reputation on the international market.
STORY-LINE:
These aren't the vineyards of France, Italy or Spain, instead they're in Ustina in Bulgaria, around 140 kilometres south east of the capital, Sofia.
Once home to a centuries-old winemaking tradition, 45 years spent behind the Iron Curtain meant much of that was eroded to meet the requirements of a planned economy.
This led to a severing of connections between land and owners, replaced by centralised wine-growing and state monopoly.
It was quantity that mattered, rather than quality of the large amounts produced, mainly for the Soviet market.
After the collapse of the communist regime in 1989, the liberalisation of winemaking in Bulgaria began.
But the privatisation of large wineries caused serious disruption and in some cases closures.
Winemaking was one of the business sectors which suffered most and exports to all markets dropped drastically.
But with the start of the new millennium, the situation gradually began to improve.
Here at trendy winery, Villa Yustina, workers are busy picking grapes from their latest wines.
Growing... here is a difficult job. The soil here is up to PH9, which is pure quicklime, says vineyard worker, Nikolay Trayanov.
Due to the active carbonates in the soil, we are able to obtain certain aromas in the grapes, which cannot be easily found elsewhere.
Experts say Bulgaria produced 102 million litres of wine last year, 60 percent of which for export.
This year, they're estimating an excellent harvest and record-breaking production.
The quality of Bulgarian wines has seriously improved over the last ten years, says wine expert and Villa Yustina technologist, Vassil Stoyanov.
They are very competitive now thanks to the healthy rivalry between all the small wine producers.
The main goals now are to develop new vineyards, establish small boutique wineries, improve the quality of Bulgarian wines and intensify competition both domestically and globally.
Winery owner, Ivo Varbanov, has for years been nurturing his love of making top quality wines.
His small artisan winery produced its first vintage in 2008, the wines rapidly gained critical acclaim and commercial success for their distinctive style and high quality.
Varbanov, who also chairs the Bulgarian Association of Independent Winegrowers, says wineries increasingly use grapes from their own vineyards.
In recent years, we see that a lot of small producers are trying to have control over all their production cycle, he says.
They need to have control from their own vineyards to the final product, to survey and control the processes in the field, vineyard, and the whole process of winemaking. This is the most important moment for Bulgarian wines in recent years and many successful projects gradually build a solid reputation not only domestically, but also on the international market. In a quiet manner, Bulgarian wines are returning to the markets, not just because of marketing strategies, but because of its quality, which actually is the best marketing.
Slowly but surely, Bulgaria is making its way back onto the international winemaking map.

September and October 2017 has marked the time for harvesting beautiful raw material for the manufacture of Villa Melnik Wines; The Best wines of Bulgaria.

The owner, Nikola Zikatanov, was born in the village across from the winery, Kapatovo, in a family with longstanding traditions in vine growing and wine making. Nikola decided to dedicate the second, wiser part of his life to reviving his family traditions and building a business for the generations to come.

Together with his wife, Lyubka and daughter Militza, he planted the vineyards and built the winery. They planted their vineyards with indigenous and international grape varieties with the clear mission to bring back the glory of the Melnik wine and to lead the Renaissance of the region.

At Villa Melnik, we believe in the potential of the local grape varieties. We create brave blends between rare Bulgarian grapes and international grapes, and innovate continuously. We look for the true expression of the Melnik Terroir in each of our wines.

Their new, modern winery opened doors in 2013. It boasts state-of-the art wine-making equipment and a dedicated highly-qualified staff. From day one, they welcome wine enthusiasts in the winery for tours and tastings from all over the world, so that they may experience the wine making process for themselves.

In 2015, after seven years of study and work experience abroad, Militza, also joined the family business. She is now helping to create the modern legend of Melnik with futuristic vision and tradition.

At Villa Melnik, they believe that with hard and consistent work, with an honest approach to Wine, and respect for Nature and the Client, they can produce excellent, world-renowned wines with a distinct Melnik character.
