Having a strong vision and embracing new technology is the key to success in a fast-moving industry, for State Cinema owner John Kelly.
Since 2002, John has progressively transformed this North Hobart icon into a state-of-the art cinema, which today attracts over 200,000 patrons each year.
For week nine of the Tasmania Business in Action campaign, John explains how
the State Cinema now offers visitors a complete destination experience with seven digitally controlled cinemas, a new rooftop cinema, a beautiful bookstore and a café/bar with a strong emphasis on quality Tasmanian food and beverage.

Life In Australia: Hobart
From the Film Australia Collection. Made by The Commonwealth Film Unit 1966. Directed by Donald Anderson.
Life In Australia: Hobart shows scenes illustrating daily life, industry, recreation and the tourist features of Hobart, Tasmania. As it follows the postman on his daily rounds it provides a description of Hobart and surrounding districts, which are crowded with historic buildings and monuments dating back to the first settlers and convicts. The Life In Australia series portrays Australian cities and rural centres as happy, lively places where good homes, abundant jobs, schools, hospitals and amenities provide the foundation for a relaxed lifestyle where sport, shopping, religion and even art combine to create a homogenous and prosperous society. If you have any information about the people or places in this film we would love to hear your comments.

20 years later: return to Launceston
I moves away from Launceston, Tasmania at the start of 1999. 20 years have passed by in a flash.
I decided 20 years was a good time to return and I re-vist my old apartment in Launceston.
It was good to be back at an apartment I had lived at for over three years in the 90s. Some things had changed, some just looked a little different.
Will it take me another 20 years to return?
