4DX cinema finally hits Australia - But is it any good? An honest review
4DX hits Australia - but is it any good? An honest review.
The latest you-beaut technological marvel designed to enhance the movie-going experience has just arrived in Australia
It's called 4DX and has been around since 2009 so it's taken a while for it to get here. Australia is the 50th country to get 4DX and so far it's only available on one screen, and that's at the gleaming Century City Village complex in Glen Waverley.
In a nutshell, 4DX promises to turn films into an immersive and unforgettable adventure as every seat in the entire cinema physically moves about in approximate synchronisation with the action unspooling on the screen. Also, you'll get blasted with water, wind, scents, mist and fog.
Now, if this sounds like the cheesiest attempt to enhance the movie-going experience since Sensurround vibrated us in the 1970s and John Waters freaked ss all out in 1980 with Odorama, you're right.
But unlike those hokey add-ons - and like the annoying persistence of new-age 3D - 4DX wants to be seen as more than a mere gimmick.
Well, it is more than a mere gimmick. It is a compendium of gimmicks.
But is it any good?
In the interests of providing a fair assessment of 4DX I avoided the hoo-haa of the media preview and instead subjected myself to a third viewing of Thor Ragnarok at a public 4DX screening.
So, what's it like?
Well, the main thing you notice is just how severe and violent all that movement is. With no notice your seat suddenly lunges forward, then back, then tilts, yaws, leans and shakes.
While all this is going on you also get blasted with cold gusts, sprayed in the face with mists and water, shot in the back of the neck with an air hose and prodded in the spine as though somebody behind you is angrily kicking your seat. Occasionally the screen emits banks of fog. This adds up to a lot of hissing from pressure hoses over the soundtrtack.
I found these gyrations very distracting. The movement gets so intense that the quiet periods in the film come as something of a relief.
To be honest, 4DX proved to be diverting, but not all that fun.
Now, if you suffer from motion sickness don't go anywhere near 4DX.
And if you've never suffered from motion sickness, be prepared for the possibility that you just might be about to.
There is so much rocking around across the two-hours it might be a good idea to avoid eating a big meal beforehand, just in case.
While hot drinks are not allowed into the 4DX theatre, soft drinks and popcorn are and it is hard to imagine the stuff staying where it's supposed to during the assaults of these sudden cinema quakes.
Now, I was lucky. Having seen Thor before, I could anticipate when the rocky scenes were likely to hit.
But the unsuspecting filmgoer could be in trouble. While you go to take a sip from your giant bucket of Fanta a sudden jolt can splash the stuff all over the place, including your face. The same with popcorn.
So let us pray for the poor cinema staffers who have to go in after each screening and face the mess that a 4DX movie can create.
There is a long list of warnings when you buy your tickets online, which you must read thoroughly. especially if you're asthmatic, pregnant or weigh over 120 kg. The warnings also appear before the movie, but by then it might be too late.
Now, like 3D and IMAX, you pay a premium for the 4DX experience, which means an adult can fork over $31.50 (including booking fee). That's a lot for a simulation of what it would be like watching a film during an earthquake.
However, there was a lovely little hidden bonus: because all the seats in the cinema move regardless of whether there's anyone sitting in them, the vision of watching banks of empty seats moving in perfect synchronisation was, I have to say, quite delightful. It was like watching a robotic ballet. It's pretty cool so I recommend booking a seat near the back.
But the Big Question is - will 4DX take off? Well, it depends whether people find it immersive or merely distracting. There are some heavy hitters set for 4DX, including Justice League, Jumanji and The Last Jedi. This should give the format a good workout before people dedcide whether it'll be allowed to become part of their movie going diet.

Ayr
Ayr is a town and former Royal Burgh sitting along the west coast of Ayrshire in Scotland. It forms a part of the South Ayrshire Local Authority area, serving as the area's administrative centre. Historically, Ayr was the county town of Ayrshire until 1975. Ayr is currently the most populated settlement in Ayrshire and the South of Scotland. It is the 13th most populous locality in Scotland.
The town was established in 1205 and soon developed as the central market and port along the west coast of Scotland, becoming a prominent trading port to Ireland. Oliver Cromwell also established a Citadel along the south of the river Ayr, the ramparts of which remain visible to this day. As the birthplace of famous Scottish poet Robert Burns, the suburb of Alloway, in the south of the town, houses his former home and the Robert Burns Experience. Across the Victorian era coal and iron remained the central export of the town, with fishing and shipping also forming a significant sect of the local economy. Ayr later developed as a holiday resort, aspects of which remain the case today with the continued presence of a Butlins holiday park to the south of the town. The Gaiety Theatre, Ayr ran various shows across the late 20th century, attracting performers from across the United Kingdom, and despite its decline throughout the 2000s, it remains in operation today.

Trams in Sydney
The Sydney tramway network once served Sydney, the capital city of New South Wales, Australia. In its heyday, it was the largest in Australia, the second largest in the Commonwealth of Nations, and one of the largest in the world. The network was heavily worked, with about 1,600 cars in service at any one time at its peak during the 1930s.
Throughout the first half of the twentieth century, an average of more than one tram journey per day was made in Sydney by every man and woman, infant and child in the city. Patronage peaked in 1945 at 405 million passenger journeys. The system was in place from 1879 until its winding down in the 1950s and closure in 1961. It had a maximum street mileage of 181 miles, in 1923.

SUMMARY
=======
Manhattan (), often referred to locally as the City, is the most densely populated borough of New York City, its economic and administrative center, its cultural identifier, and its historical birthplace. The borough is coextensive with New York County, one of the original counties of the U.S. state of New York. The borough consists mostly of Manhattan Island, bounded by the Hudson, East, and Harlem rivers; several small adjacent islands; and Marble Hill, a small neighborhood now on the U.S. mainland, physically connected to the Bronx and separated from the rest of Manhattan by the Harlem River. Manhattan Island is divided into three informally bounded components, each aligned with its long axis: Lower, Midtown, and Upper Manhattan.
Manhattan is often described as the cultural, financial, media, and entertainment capital of the world, and the borough hosts the United Nations Headquarters. Anchored by Wall Street in the Financial District of Lower Manhattan, New York City has been called both the most economically powerful city and the leading financial center of the world, and Manhattan is home to the world's two largest stock exchanges by total market capitalization: the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ. Many multinational media conglomerates are based in Manhattan, and the borough has been the setting for numerous books, films, and television shows. Manhattan is historically documented to have been purchased by Dutch colonists from Native Americans in 1626 for 60 guilders, which equals roughly US$1050 in current terms. Manhattan real estate has since become among the most expensive in the world, with the value of Manhattan Island, including real estate, estimated to exceed US$3 trillion in 2013; median residential property sale prices in Manhattan approximated US$1,600 per square foot ($17,000/m2) as of 2018, with Fifth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan commanding the highest retail rents in the world, at US$3,000 per square foot ($32,000/m2) in 2017.Manhattan traces its origins to a trading post founded by colonists from the Dutch Republic in 1624 on Lower Manhattan; the post was named New Amsterdam in 1626. The territory and its surroundings came under English control in 1664 and were renamed New York after King Charles II of England granted the lands to his brother, the Duke of York. New York, based in present-day Manhattan, served as the capital of the United States from 1785 until 1790. The Statue of Liberty greeted millions of immigrants as they came to the Americas by ship in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and is a world symbol of the United States and its ideals of liberty and peace. Manhattan became a borough during the consolidation of New York City in 1898.
New York County is the United States' second-smallest county by land area (larger only than Kalawao County, Hawaii), and is also the most densely populated U.S. county. It is also one of the most densely populated areas in the world, with a census-estimated 2017 population of 1,664,727 living in a land area of 22.83 square miles (59.13 km2), or 72,918 residents per square mile (28,154/km2), higher than the density of any individual U.S. city. On business days, the influx of commuters increases this number to over 3.9 million, or more than 170,000 people per square mile (65,600/km2). Manhattan has the third-largest population of New York City's five boroughs, after Brooklyn and Queens, and is the smallest borough in terms of land area. Many districts and landmarks in Manhattan are well known, as New York City received a record 62.8 million tourists in 2017, and Manhattan hosts three of the world's 10 most-visited tourist attractions in 2013: Times Square, Central Park, and Grand Central Terminal. The borough hosts many prominent bridges, such as the Brooklyn Bridge; skyscrapers such as the Empire State Building; and parks, such as Central Park. Chinatown incorporates the highest concentration of Chinese ...

In 1770, during his first Pacific voyage in the Endeavour, Lieutenant James Cook, after leaving Botany Bay, saw the entrance to Port Jackson, but sailed past and did not enter the inlet. In 1788, the First Fleet of convicts, led by Arthur Phillip, were the first recorded Europeans to sail into Port Jackson. Here they founded Sydney as a British penal colony, the first European settlement in Australia. Phillip named the city Sydney in recognition of Thomas Townshend, 1st Viscount Sydney. Penal transportation to New South Wales ended soon after Sydney was incorporated as a city in 1842. A gold rush occurred in the colony in 1851, and over the next century, Sydney transformed from a colonial outpost into a major global cultural and economic centre. After World War II, it experienced mass migration and became one of the most multicultural cities in the world. At the time of the 2011 census, more than 250 different languages were spoken in Sydney and about 40 percent of residents spoke a language other than English at home. Furthermore, 36% of the population reported having been born overseas.Despite being one of the most expensive cities in the world, the 2018 Mercer Quality of Living Survey ranks Sydney tenth in the world in terms of quality of living, making it one of the most livable cities. Orlando () is a city in the U.S. state of Florida and the county seat of Orange County. Located in Central Florida, it is the center of the Orlando metropolitan area, which had a population of 2,509,831, according to U.S. Census Bureau figures released in July 2017. These figures make it the 23rd-largest metropolitan area in the United States, the sixth-largest metropolitan area in the Southern United States, and the third-largest metropolitan area in Florida. As of 2015, Orlando had an estimated city-proper population of 280,257, making it the 73rd-largest city in the United States, the fourth-largest city in Florida, and the state's largest inland city.
The City of Orlando is nicknamed The City Beautiful, and its symbol is the fountain at Lake Eola. Orlando is also known as The Theme Park Capital of the World and in 2018 its tourist attractions and events drew more than 75 million visitors. The Orlando International Airport (MCO or OIA) is the thirteenth-busiest airport in the United States and the 29th-busiest in the world. As one of the world's most visited tourist destinations, Orlando's famous attractions form the backbone of its tourism industry. The two most significant of these attractions are Walt Disney World, opened by the Walt Disney Company in 1971, and located approximately 21 miles (34 km) southwest of Downtown Orlando in Bay Lake; and the Universal Orlando Resort, opened in 1990 as a major expansion of Universal Studios Florida. With the exception of Walt Disney World, most major attractions are located along International Drive with one of these attractions being the Orlando Eye. The city is also one of the busiest American cities for conferences and conventions; the Orange County Convention Center is the second-largest convention facility in the United States.
Like other major cities in the Sun Belt, Orlando grew rapidly from the 1980s up into the first decade of the 21st century. Orlando is home to the University of Central Florida, which is the largest university campus in the United States in terms of enrollment as o ...
