Year Round Great Value Wines from Chile -- Bay Area
by Rolfe Schaumburger
I recently had the pleasure of visiting with Vicente Marin, director of North American sales for The Santa Carolina Winery. Santa Carolina is the second largest producer of wines from South America with vineyards and wineries in both Chile and Argentina. The company is family owned and has been in existence for over 125 years producing about 2.2 million cases of wine annually.
Despite the recent challenges of the major earthquake, in early 2010, the people of Chile were able to overcome huge obstacles and continue to deliver, without interruption wines of superior quality at a very fair price. Ten percent of all wine, for the current vintage, was lost; everything from the wineries and roads to the ports were affected by this natural disaster.
I have always felt that the wines from Chile were an exceptional value, even 15 years ago when Chile was more known for the low end wines. Not to take anything away from the entry level 1.5 liter wines because they are of great quality and value and still continue to grow in sales. However, the strides they have made in the mid range $10.00 to $20.00 wines, to me, is amazing. Many of these mid-range wines are of world class quality and sell at a price that won't break the bank. Similar quality wines, produced in the U.S. might be two to three times more expensive.
When asking Vicente what he feels some of the keys to success were, he stated that the ownership of Santa Carolina is committed to capital reinvestment in winemaking talent, vineyards and state of the art wine making facilities. Over the last few years, Santa Caroline wineries have invested millions into this philosophy and practice; and it is paying off. Proof of this is in every wine publication you pick up; filled with raving reviews and incredibly high scores for many of these value priced wines.
In 2010, I traveled to Chile and my first-hand experience assured me that Chile, especially Santa Carolina, would continue to be at the cutting edge producing great value, great quality wines.
Many of the Chilean wine producers are exploring not only new areas for vineyard sites but are reworking and expanding in some of the already proven but lesser known growing areas such as the Casa Blanca Valley. The Casa Blanca Valley is situated near the beautiful coastal towns of Valparaiso and Vina Del Mar. The close proximity of the ocean to Casa Blanca tempers the climate, winters tend to have less risk of frost and summers are mild thanks to the marine influence of the frigid Pacific Oceans Humboldt current that comes up from Antarctica. These factors along with the relatively poor soil condition and low rainfall make Casa Blanca perfect for growing Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc. Long known for the great Bordeaux varietals such as Cabernet and Merlot these same weather and soil factors are providing the opportunity for Chile to also come on strong with Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays.
While in the Casa Blanca Valley, I spoke with the very talented Andres Caballero, the Head Winemaker of Santa Carolina. I learned about the Casa Blanca region itself and his philosophy on producing great wines. The key to producing consistently great wines begins in the vineyards.. and he believes that the Casa Blanca Valley is one of the best. Combine this great growing environment with consulting help from one of the greatest winemaking talents in the world, Nick Goldschmidt and you've got a hugely successful program producing world class wines at bargain prices.
Take some time to try some of the wines from the Casa Blanca Winery and I think you will agree. Casa Blanca produces a Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc and a Pinot Noir. Some other standout wines coming from the Santa Carolina Winery are the Reserva De Familia Cabernet and the Reserva De Familia Carmenere both had a 90 or better rating from the Wine Enthusiast.
So whether you are sampling entry level wines from Santa Carolina, the Casa Blanca Winery or the new world class Carmenere called Herencia. You can rest assured that your money was spent wisely on a wine that will always over deliver for the price. Most of these wines are readily available locally.
If you need assistance finding them or if you have questions in general about Chilean wines please send me an email at rolfe@wiredin.cc and I will be happy to help.

Wine is truly made of dreams. . .
Filming pioneers domesticating a new terroir is an incredible opportunity to show the world that only passion creates movement and action. In this film, Rudi Goldman transcends his passion with the passion of the MOVI winemakers. Due to the complexity of wide a range of factors, bringing the best from a terroir is a winemaker’s daily challenge that only people with passion can achieve.
As Francisco Gillmore says in the film, ‘the difference is in the people who produce the wines.’
