villoondi theertham rameswaram
It is in Rameswaram, this was created with lord Rama shot an arrow to get fresh water from the sea to quench his wife Sita’s thirst. Located about 7 km from the Ramanathaswamy Temple, this place offers some stunningly beautiful and dramatic views of the sea. Incidentally, the place is named Villondi or 'buried bow' as it is believed to be the place where Lord Rama buried his bow and arrow. A long platform leads you to this holy well and it is magical to walk on it as you see the sea from both the sides. The water in the well is quite mysteriously sweet in spite of being surrounded by salt sea water all around and devotees believe it will do them good if they take a sip of this holy water. There is a small temple like structure adjoining this place and as you stand at the edge of the platform, you can see statues of gods and goddesses in the water bed. The sight is quite fascinating, just like the place itself.

Mythical story of Villoondi Theertham:
There may be some scientific reasons for the existence of pure water spring inside the saline water body, but there is a mythical story from Ramayana which states the existence and the reason for the good water spring inside the sea in this place.
After rescuing his wife Sita from Ravana, Rama and his crew flew from Sri lanka to the Rameshwaram, at Rameswaram they perform rituals and poojas by installing a shiva linga.
After performing the rituals and took bath in the theerthas (Sacred baths) Rama with his crew flew to his birth place Ayodhya by means of pushpaka vimana (A flying machine acquired from ravana) . On the way to his abode, the crew asks for water in thirst.Rama suddenly took his arrow and shot it into the sea , the place where his arrow pierced in the sea, emerged a spring. By that spring, the crew quenched their thirst and thank Rama.
The word “villoondi “ literally means “the place pierced by arrow “ and Theertham means sacred water in Tamil language.

Amazing SouthIndia Rameshwaram Journey
Dhanushkodi is an abandoned town at the south-eastern tip of Pamban Island of the state of Tamil Nadu in India. It is situated to the South-East of Pamban and is about 18 miles west of Talaimannar in Sri Lanka. The town was destroyed during the 1964 Rameswaram cyclone and remains uninhabited in the aftermath.
Adam's Bridge, also known as Rama's Bridge or Rama Setu, is a chain of limestone shoals, between Pamban Island, also known as Rameswaram Island, off the south-eastern coast of Tamil Nadu, India, and Mannar Island, off the north-western coast of Sri Lanka.
Rameswaram is a town on Pamban Island, in the southeast Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It’s known for Ramanathaswamy Temple, a Hindu pilgrimage site with ornate corridors, huge sculpted pillars and sacred water tanks. Devotees bathe in the waters of Agni Theertham, off the beach east of the temple. Gandamadana Parvatham is a hill with island views. A chakra (wheel) here is said to bear an imprint of Lord Rama’s feet.

JADA THEERTHAM RAMESWARAM
Jada Theertham and its Temple are located at a distance of about 14 kms from Rameswaram en route Dhanushkodi. Sri Ramar is believed to have washed his long hair (Jada) here and so is called Jada theertham. It is considered that taking bath here people will not get affected with poverty and sins; It is considered to fetch good thoughts free from confusions and also get the equivalence of doing all the dhanams.
The water in this tank which is surrounded by sand dunes is as sweet as coconut tree. Tourists can also see Jada Theertham temple within the Kaveri Theertham premises. This temple is very small temple under the trunk of huge Peepal Tree.
Local people believe that all deities in Rameswaram come here to take rest. Maha Shivarathri (Yearly once) celebration and maha Makam (Once in 12 Years) festival are the grand events of this temple
Viloondi Teertham- Sweet Water in Sea - Rameswaram
Viloondi Teertham is about 8 kms from Rameswaram Temple, located in between Rameswaram Temple and Pamban Bride. You have to go about one kms inside from the highway. The teertham is actually a sweet water well on the sea shore. It is definitely a surprise to get sweet water in the middle of sea water. According to mythological stories after the war was over with King Ravana, Lord Rama did pooja by installing a Shivalinga. He shot an arrow at this place where sweet water came out to quench the thirst Sita and others.

Bathing at Agni Teertham in Rameswaram
Agni Teertham is the main sea beach of Rameswaram just 200 meters from the east gate of Rameswaram Temple. The place is recently modified with arches and steps for the convenience of pilgrims. Thousands of people take holy bath here on everyday. We also took bath at the holy Teertham. The depth of water is very less at this place in the sea and quite safe to take bath even if going long inside.

Rameswaram Ramanathaswamy
