The Choral Synagogue of Vilnius (Lithuanian: Vilniaus choralinė sinagoga) is the only synagogue in Vilnius that is still in use. The other synagogues were destroyed partly during World War II, when Lithuania was occupied by Nazi Germany, and partly by the Soviet authorities after the war.
The Choral Synagogue of Vilnius was built in 1903.The synagogue is built in a Romanesque-Moorish style.It is the only active synagogue that survived both the Holocaust and Soviet rule in this city that once had over 100 synagogues. International donations and a small community of Jews in Vilnius support the synagogue. The synagogue holds services and is open to visitors.

Dr. Shimon Alperovich (Simonas Alperavičius), for around two decades the head of the Jewish Community of Lithuania (he retired earlier this year), gave us a brief brief interview in Yiddish on September 16th 2013, in Vilnius, about various current plans to rebuild the Great Synagogue in the city (one multimillion dollar prospectus, that excludes the Jewish community, has been circulating widely in advance of next week's events tied to the September 23rd seventieth anniversary of the Vilna Ghetto's liquidation).
Dr. Alperovich stressed that he is speaking in a purely personal capacity. The brief video interview includes, in summary, these thoughts:
(a) It is a problem to fill the existing Choral Synagogue with worshipers and the specter of a new synagogue without any worshipers at all does not appeal to him.
(b) There is (and has for many years been) a group that wishes to turn this massive building project into a business for profit.
(c) The vast amount of money involved could be spent in better ways, whether for historical projects or helping the truly needy.
(d) Not rebuilding does not mean doing nothing. Dr. Alperovich mentions construction of an appropriate monument (e.g. a column) and the endeavor to excavate, preserve and make permanently visible to the public the genuine remains (now underground) of the actual Great Synagogue. [The Torah ark's surround was rapidly dug up a few years ago, and then covered over again.]
The Great Synagogue is known in Vilna Yiddish as di shtót-shul or di gréyse shul.

Découverte dans les ruines de la synagogue de Vilnius
Les dirigeants de la communauté juive en Lituanie ont annoncé jeudi la découverte d'une plaque du XVIIIe siècle portant des inscriptions hébraïques détaillant les voyages effectués par des habitants juifs de Vilnius, à l’époque, en Terre sainte.
La plaque a été découverte dans une cave située là où se trouvait l’ancienne Grande Synagogue de Vilnius, le principal sanctuaire juif de Lituanie, endommagée par les nazis, et détruites par les soviétiques.
En 1776, nous sommes montés avec joie dans notre pays (Eretz Israel), peut-on lire sur une partie de l'inscription.
L’inscription du mot hébreu Aliyah, faisant référence à l'immigration de juifs de diaspora vers Israël,
C'était une grande surprise, a déclaré Faina Kukliansky, une des leaders de la communauté juive de Lituanie.
Les archéologues ont éclaté en sanglots lorsqu'ils ont évoqué ces découvertes, a-t-elle ajouté. Elles revêtent une importance mondiale.
La synagogue de Vilnius, qui date des années 1630, était le sanctuaire le plus important de la communauté juive de Lituanie, jadis vibrante.
