Vilnius is the capital of Lithuania and a melting pot of different cultures. The city’s main landmark is Castle Hill with its red Gediminas Tower that crowns the steep hill and marks the beginning of the city's history. Within the tower is the Gothic castle of Grand Duke Vytautas which was built of red brick in 1419. The Boulevard begins in Cathedral Square which was where Grand Duke Mindaugas had the city’s first cathedral built behind which was situated his palace. The basilica contains a copy of the Shroud Of Turin. The Saint Johannis Church is part of the university complex. Along with its impressive altar, this modest church is one of the country’s most beautiful examples of baroque design and possesses no less than ten altars. Beyond the five bridges of the Vilnia, the artist Republic of Užupia welcomes with its state symbol of a golden angel with trombone. This old residential neighbourhood almost fell into total disrepair but a number of artists have subsequently settled there and its charming backyards have now been improved by several small art galleries. Vilnius is surrounded by forests and meadows on the banks of the Neris, a European Capital Of Culture full of fine architecture and vibrant spirit!

Lewben Art Foundation bring art to the streets of Vilnius | JCDecaux Lithuania
Lewben Art Foundation partnered with JCDeaux Lithuania to exhibit Pedro Reyes's artwork Violin inside a Morris Column in Vilnius for its Collecting hits exhibition.
The exhibition, held in the National Gallery of Art, showcases art objects with dedicated soundtracks created by famous contemporary Lithuanian musicians.
The Violin article is made of guns from criminal organizations in Mexico and accompanied with a soundtrack created by artist Gon.

When the Internet Governance Forum met in September 2010 for their yearly conference, we quietly snuck out of the busy conference halls to meet with some people on the streets of Vilnius.

Trendy bars and cafes in the Old Town
Where the Neris and Vilnele rivers meet in southeastern Lithuania lies the capital city of Vilnius. Founded as the country’s principle city in 1323, Vilnius has also served as the centre of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Located some 300 km to the east of the Baltic seashore, the city has no true port, making it, like Moscow, a capital deep inland. A fair sized city, Vilnius boasts a population of 550,000 inhabitants and, with nearly 70 percent of the city made up of leafy parks, it is one of Europe’s greenest cities. Hop on one of airBaltic's regular flights to Vilnius International Airport to start a great holiday.
Languages
Labas! (Hello!) Lithuanian, whose only close relative is Latvian, is the official language of Vilnius. Russian is widely spoken and understood, although younger generations will be up to speed with English. A city-break in Vilnius does not require learning either Lithuanian or Russian, but a few phrases may come in handy, especially when lifting a glass to say cheers to your host. Either Oplia or I sveikata will do, as long as there is good eye contact.
See and Do
The old town is the most magnificent part of Vilnius, with one of Europe’s largest groupings of historic buildings. Baroque architecture prevails with a few outstanding pieces in other styles, including the Gothic St. Anne’s Church, said to have been even the envy of Napolean, who sought to pocket the tiny church on his return to France. It is simply stunning, no matter how many times it’s seen. Archcathedral Basilica, first a wooden church constructed in 1251 and then rebuilt several times over the centuries is another strong piece of the city’s architecture, complete with some spooky catacombs beneath for those daring enough to venture in. Otherwise, the faint of heart can enjoy a photo history of the city inside the upper part of the church.
Here is where the Lithuanian magic begins. Outside in the square, find the Stebuklas (meaning Miracle) tile, make a wish and spin round three times to have your desire granted. This little stone marks the Vilnius end point for the human chain or Baltic Way connecting the three Baltic capitals during a protest a few years before the fall of the Soviet Union.
Climb up to Gediminas Castle from Cathedral Square to see this beautiful red brick castle built by the Dukesof Lithuania in the 14th century. Turn and look out for some extraordinary views of the city. The city has several museums of note, including the Lithuanian Art Museum, with collections of local art and some international pieces and the House of the Signatories where the Act of Independence of Lithuania was signed in 1918.
For nightlife, get out to the Old Town where many hotel bars, clubs and trendy cafes await, along with the locals, who know how to create a great time. If possible, treat yourself to a little Krupnika, traditional Lithuanian honey liquor, to get into the full mood and style of Vilnius.

The Cathedral of Vilnius is the main Roman Catholic Cathedral of Lithuania. It is situated in Vilnius Old Town, just off of Cathedral Square. Dedicated to Saints Stanislaus and Ladislaus, the church is the heart of Catholic spiritual life in Lithuania.The coronations of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania took place within its confines. Inside its crypts and catacombs are buried many famous people from Lithuanian and Polish history including Vytautas (1430), his wife Anna (1418), his brother Sigismund (Žygimantas) (1440), his cousin Švitrigaila (1452), Saint Casimir (1484), Alexander Jagiellon (1506), and two wives of Sigismund II Augustus: Elisabeth of Habsburg (1545) and Barbara Radziwiłł (1551). The heart of the Polish king Władysław IV Vasa was buried there upon his death, although the rest of his body is buried at the Wawel Cathedral in Kraków.
Inside, there are more than forty works of art dating from the 16th through 19th centuries, including frescoes and paintings of various sizes. During the restoration of the Cathedral, the altars of a presumed pagan temple and the original floor, laid during the reign of King Mindaugas, were uncovered. In addition, the remains of the cathedral built in 1387 were also located. A fresco dating from the end of the 14th century, the oldest known fresco in Lithuania, was found on the wall of one of the cathedral's underground chapels.
During the Soviet regime initially the cathedral was converted into a warehouse. Masses were celebrated again starting in 1985, although the cathedral was still officially called The Gallery of Images at that time. In 1989, its status as a cathedral was restored.Wikipedia

Lithuania's slimmed-down cultural extravaganza

Three Uses of the Knife 3: Olof Olsson at the National Gallery of Art, Vilnius, Lithuania
Three Uses of the Knife -- an annual series of lectures and seminars around various topics of art organized in Vilnius since 2009, initiated by the team of contemporary art online magazine artnews.lt in collaboration with the Contemporary Art Centre (Vilnius) and the Art Information Centre of the National Gallery of Art (Vilnius).
Inspired by a cloud of recent discourses around the revival of the linguistic turn, or its modification into the narrative turn, as suggested by Dieter Roelstraete, this year's Three Uses of the Knife (re)turns its focus on language and oral communication.
Olof Olsson is an artist based in Copenhagen. In his youth Olof Olsson dabbled in journalism, documentary photography, and as a radio disc jockey. At university Olof studied languages, philosophy and translation theory. In 1992 Olof did his first exhibition, a fictive account of an American photographer, Joseph Slightly, and his adventures and sufferings during the first half of the 20th century. Since 2007 Olof is working with spoken performances.
