Black Bears at the American Bear Association - Orr, Minnesota
Best place in North America to view wild bears Vince Shute Wildlife Sanctuary has preserved a unique opportunity to view and to photograph the intimate world of the normally reclusive black bear. Around 80+ black bears visit the sanctuary each season, including large boars, sows with cubs, yearlings and sub-adults. The American Bear Association offer a variety of scheduled workshops (as well as private) to photograph this normally shy and reclusive animal.
Nestled in the North Woods of Minnesota, the Sanctuary consists of 360 acres of forested land located approximately two hours northwest of Duluth. Check us out online at or visit the black bears in their natural behavior!
SURROUNDED by BEARS in the WILD at Vince Shute Wildlife Sanctuary
Many years ago, a humble Minnesota logger made a decision that would greatly affect black bears and the attitudes people have towards this often-misunderstood animal. It was then that Vince Shute chose to stop shooting the bears that broke into his cabins. He tried a more peaceful approach and the strategy worked – no more break-ins. Vince claimed, “the bears aren’t mean, just hungry!” Thus, began Vince’s long and celebrated life with black bears in a tiny corner of the north woods near Orr, Minnesota.
Generations of black bears still visit his former homestead, now designated as The Vince Shute Wildlife Sanctuary. The American Bear Association, a non-profit organization, was formed to manage the sanctuary in order to promote a better understanding of the black bear through education, observation and experience. Vince Shute’s final wish has become a reality – peaceful coexistence between humans and bears. All of the bears are free-roaming; they come and go at will through clover meadows, cool cedar swamps and pine forest.

It is a wonderful place where visitors on a viewing deck can watch wild bears forage, play, sleep, nurse cubs, climb trees, and socialize. There are NO fences, and the bears come and go as they need to. Some bears travel great distances to get there, as an extended part of their territory.
It has been recognised as a world class wildlife attraction.

Feeding wildlife is prohibited in the United States, but at The Vince Shute Wildlife Sanctuary in Northern Minnesota near the Town of Orr, there is an exception.
During summer from Memorial day in May to labor day in September, volunteers feed the bears every day in this woods.
About 40 years ago woodcutter Vince Shute moved in and built a small cabin in here, but this area is Black Bear territory. Bears often destroyed his cabin .In the beginning Vince fought back with his gun. But one day he changed his mind. “Bears are not mean animals, they are just hungry”.
After he started feeding the bears they no longer destroyed things. After Vince passed away The American Bear Association ( took over Vince’s legacy. Bear and human friendship continues even now.
