Making a Difference: Volunteering with the La Vina Ministries in Mazatlan, Mexico.
On a family vacation, my spouse suggested we do some volunteer work. Ourselves and an organized group adventured out of the tourist district and volunteered with La Vina Ministries in Mazatlan, Mexico. We helped prepared lunches for over 300 people, then distributed them to those living in 3 local communities (first world residents might call them slums) as well as those working at the dump. What an educational experience! Before we set out on this adventure, we brought down 16 bags of dry hydrated vegetable soup in our luggage. One for each of the community centers/churches that the ministries operate in the surrounding colonias. Each bag will feed 100 servings, which they said will be served on Saturdays when many of the local families come to the community center for church service, games and community meal.

Who Are We? We are a Mission Society reaching the poorest and most vulnerable members of our communities.
Vineyard-Map of Mexico-700px Many of these children come from dysfunctional families, single parent homes, or extreme poverty. While we provide support to all family members, we focus on children between the ages 4 to 14, where we have the greatest likelihood of helping the child achieve a better life for themselves and their children. We do this through our Vineyard Ministries Child Sponsorship Program.
The Vineyard Ministries of Central Mexico, founded by Fred Collom, has been working in Central Mexico since 1978. It began with church plants in the State of Zacatecas. Eventually, in 1995, a missionary team from Fresnillo, led by Fred, moved to Mazatlan and began to build an outreach here. Over the years it has grown to house our headquarters, 16 Community Centers of Hope, and three other feeding programs.
We currently are supporting projects in the states of Sinaloa, Nayarit, Zacetecas, Coahuila, and Tamaulipaus. The mission in Mazatlan alone feeds approximately 75,000 meals a year and reaches at least 2200 adults and children each week.
