Taste the Wine in Finger Lakes Wine Country, New York
Finger Lakes Wine Country, New York is home more than 100 wineries centered around Keuka, Seneca, Cayuga, and Canandaigua Lakes. In addition, many of the wineries are also members of their respective wine trails which host year-round wine and food event weekend events.
The Finger Lakes is a world-class wine producing region that specializes in aromatic white varieties like Riesling and Gewurztraminer. Throughout May the region celebrates with a Riesling Month promotion with special older vintage and new release tastings, tasting room only promotions, and free shipping on Riesling (where legal.) And of late, the region is also finding exciting success with cool-climate reds like Cabernet Franc and Pinot Noir. The terroir of the Finger Lakes is special because of the microclimate created by the lakes; extreme cold weather in the winter is avoided and warm; sales and limestone glace soils; and breezy days during the summer help ripen the grapes.

The Finger Lakes of New York is the largest and most celebrated wine producing region in the Eastern United States. At its heart lies Keuka Lake, whose spectacular beauty and glacially-deposited soils inspired early grape cultivation and the birth of America's wine industry in 1860. Today, Keuka Lake's wineries craft some of the world's most beautifully balanced and vibrant wines, and we take equal pride in the warmth of our hospitality.

A patchwork of vineyards, apple orchards, hiking trails, and small, thriving towns, this bucolic region of New York State takes its name from 11 narrow glacial lakes between the cities of Rochester and Syracuse that run north to south, like the fingers of an extremely unusual hand. The five largest lakes, where you’ll spend most of your time in the region, are Seneca, Cayuga, Skaneateles, Canandaigua, and Keuka. They are quite deep (more than 600 feet, at some points), and because water warms and cools more slowly than air, their immense volume helps moderate the surrounding temperatures. Grape varieties like Riesling and Pinot Noir in turn can flourish, despite the bitter winters.

Visiting Finger Lakes, The Finger Lakes Region, Central New York, United States
The Finger Lakes are a group of eleven long, narrow, roughly east-west lakes in a region called the finger lakes region in Central New York in the United States. This region is defined as a bioregion. They are a popular tourist destination.
The lakes' shapes reminded early map-makers of human fingers, and the name stuck. Cayuga (435 feet, 133 m) and Seneca (618 feet, 188 m) are among the deepest in the United States, with their bottoms well below sea level. The two longest are close to 40 miles long (64 km) from end to end, and never more than 3.5 miles (5.6 km) wide. Cayuga (38.1 miles) is the longest, and Seneca 66.9 square miles (173 km2) the largest in total area. For more info, visit this link:

Impressions of Finger Lakes Wine Country
This is a video of our first impression of Finger Lakes Wine Country. We have to admit, we knew next to nothing about this beautiful area of New York before we came. Assuming it was a small town with lots of really sweet wines.
Little did we know we were absolutely wrong.
The Finger Lakes are filled with hundreds of beautiful cascading waterfalls, lush greenery everywhere and some of the most charming little towns we’ve ever seen.
Since we didn’t have a strong focus, and were just exploring around for a week, we thought it would be fun to put together a sort of highlight reel from our trip.
Which consisted of hiking in Watkins Glens state park and Taughannack falls to see waterfalls. Tasting from over 15 different wineries and taking a schooner out on Seneca lake.
We definitely will be back to explore more of what Finger Lakes Wine Country has to offer.

How a 1976 law kickstarted the wine industry in New York’s Finger Lakes Region
The Finger Lakes Region of New York State has long had vineyards covering its hillsides. But it wasn't until 1976 that the New York Farm Winery Act was passed, allowing winemakers to sell wine directly to consumers from their tasting rooms. This made selling wine profitable for winemakers and marked the beginning of the boom we're still seeing today. Video by Lauren Long | llong@syracuse.com
