ART-PROJECT AFTER US, INSTALLATION AT WINZAVOD CONTEMPORARY ART CENTRE (MOSCOW)
As part of a special exhibition Britanka_Coop during the Moscow International Biennale for young Art, a project “After Us” created by artists Irina Lagoshina and Daria Kurguzova proposed to reflect on the technical development of civilization and possible future paths. An Installation and a performance were showcased at the “Winzavod”, a Center of Contemporary Art in Moscow.
“After Us” are images of technological evolution and thoughts on the subject of creation such a world where human civilization, nature and technology can all coexist in a harmonious symbiosis. Such a view of the world structure refers to the concept of the noosphere of the Soviet scientist Vladimir Vernadsky. He believed that within the process of evolution, after the biosphere and the technological revolution inevitably follows the spiritual revolution known as the noosphere. The unique unity of humanity, production and nature which should all transformed to be controlled by the human mind.
The Art Project proposes to recall the concept of the noosphere and use it as a positive view of the future, as an alternative to self destruction which is being pursued by humanity. Female torsos at different stages of pregnancy were used to symbolize the next stage of technological development. Mechanisms, electricity and electronics were used as images of the historical experience. The two placental casts, one deformed the other healthy, represented two potential future outcomes. Both scenarios are already “Born” but which will be our future depends on each one of us.
The last object of the installation, the casing of the mold from the “healthy” placenta symbolizes the possibility of creating a prosperous future. This object was completed during the performance. On the opening day of the exhibition, Irina created paints with the use of natural pigments and painted the plaster casings from the female torsos and the placenta which were obtained during the creation of the project. Painted torsos were destroyed during the performance to symbolize the past, which became the genetic basis of the present and the future.

Well I think I've always had an idea to open up a contemporary art centre in the back of my mind, but it wasn't until I saw this building when I realised that it could be the perfect place to realise the idea. So I think it all came about you know almost as a lucky coincidence but as something that has been long coming and I always thought that Moscow should have a place like this.

This installation is a sort of a philosophical discourse between (Boris) Groys and Kabakov. They are playing tennis, fantastic, we look at them, but they are people who have never held a tennis racket in their hands so we look at amateur tennis players. We see these blackboards with text on them and we hear the spectators, who are not here, applauding and shouting 'encore!'

Russia is a great country, everything can be great, but for some reason it's not. We found the reason, the answer to that phenomenal question Who's to blame?. Flies. A civilisation of flies has settled upon Russia and is pumping out the whole energy. We should find out how to get rid of them - that's the answer to the question What to do? - and everything will be fine.

(Answering the question What is romantic conceptualism?) It's non-material objects which are absolutely not connected with any materialism. It's a play with things which have always been typical for Russian literature and Russian art - the belief in romanticism, in idealism, the belief in utopia.

Drunk with Art at Moscow's Winzavod
RT makes a visit to a corner of the Russian capital that has a history of going to people's heads: first with beer, then with wine and finally with art. One of Moscow's art galleries was once filled with the intoxicating aroma of wine, but now it is all about the spirit of art. What used to be a well-known Moscow winery has reinvented itself as the heart of the capital's thriving modern art scene. Winzavod Centre for Contemporary Art opened in 2007 and has since become home to some of the city's most prominent galleries. The gallery's name literally means wine factory. The 19th-century complex started out as a brewery in what was then a dark and lonely industrial suburb in eastern Moscow. After the revolution, the brewery was converted into a winery, producing a wide range of tipples that were very popular in the USSR. Few would have thought back then that the area would become Moscow's most arty neighborhood. The winery did not survive the turbulent 1990s, going bankrupt in 2001, and wine-making gave way to modern art. Walking across the gallery feels like you are on a movie set. Winzavod is simply huge: it includes seven buildings with a total space of 20,000 square meters. No wonder you can spend a whole day going from one gallery or store to another. The center's artistic heart is its exhibition spaces, each one with its own character, style and appeal. The White Hall is filled with installations and video art. Right under it is the vaulted Red Hall used for master classes, lectures and performances.
The hall, once packed with fermenting vats where grape juice was turned into wine, now boasts a variety of designer stores, showrooms, studios and small cozy galleries. At Winzavod, art is a way of life. The center holds regular festivals and art classes. You might no longer be able to do any wine-tasting here, but instead of a feast for the taste-buds, a modern art tour is sure to prove a feast for the eyes.

Moscow's private galleries : from classic cars to modern art
Moscow is famous for its many museums, but it seems their number is still on the rise, courtesy of an unexpected source -- the private museums of individual collectors.
