Chris Tilley Reviews: July Virginia International Raceway USPSA Match Footage (VIR) [STAGE 4/6]
Kneedragin, motorcycle road racing .
In 2003 I decided I wanted to make a documentary on a subject I had been PASSIONATE ABOUT since I was a teenager...GRAN PRIX style MOTORCYCLE ROAD RACING...I started filming at Loudon, in New Hampshire then onto Summit Point in West Virginia, VIR in Alton, Virginia, Roebling Road in Savannah, Georgia and lastly Barber in Birmingham, Alabama...several tracks I re-visited more than once & continued working on the project into 2004 & 2005..then I edited a 'pilot' program.
I had been VERY successfully working as a freelance television journalist for 5 years (& continued for 10 more)...my work appeared regularly on every network in the New York City market as well as throughout Europe - syndicated by CNN & Associated Press Television News...but in spite of my connections I was unable to generate any interest in the second most popular spectator sport in the world (soccer is #1)...cable networks were equally unimpressed...it turns out the television industry bases their programming on audience participation and here in the USA Motorcycle Road Racing events seldom get 10% of the numbers seen in Europe...at Assen; in the Netherlands, 250,000 people attend the MOTO GP's regularly, likewise in Spain & Italy 125,000 spectators are considered the norm and the television viewer numbers throughout the rest of the developed world are equally impressive...Super Bowl audience numbers for all of the MOTO GP's !!! There is a GP in Qatar; the capital of Dubai, with state of the art facilities...a 3.3 mile track costing 58 million dollars...where; because of the high temperatures during daylight hours...for the first time in GP history racing is done at night on a lit circuit...and next year China will be hosting it's first GP !!!.
2 things have motivated me to re-consider the making of a DOCUMENTARY SERIES on THE SPORT THAT TAKES MY BREATH AWAY...P.S.: 2003 was a MAGICAL year for me; not only did I begin work on my documentary...I RETURNED TO ROAD RACING after a 35 YEAR HIATUS...initially on a Honda RS 125; a year later I acquired a TZ 250 as well, and in 2006 I won the CCS Mid-Atlantic 125cc Championship and was on the podium 14 times!
...(those 2 things) why I feel the timing is right for another attempt at getting my documentary funded & aired are...FIRST - recently a motion picture filmed over a 12 year period & another one over a 7 year period have received rave reviews & experienced dramatic box office successes - the public seems to enjoy being witness to - something seldom seen on the screen - proximity to the characters' evolution over long periods of time...perhaps the viewer feels more 'attached' to the story and/or finds comfort and ease in becoming 'a part of the story' (relevance: this new genre is attracting audiences in very large numbers)...
SECONDLY (& here's THE HOOK) - one of the riders seen in my video - 14 y/o JOSH HERRIN - has developed into an outstanding rider, A PHENOM...in the last 10 years he has seldom not finished in the top 5 & has won multiple championship as a contract rider for the Yamaha Factory Team - including 2nd place in 2012 & winning the 2013 AMA Super Bike Championship. He is currently in Europe, hired by AirAsia Caterham to be part of their Moto2 Team, to compete in the most competitive of all MOTO GP classes !!!
I created this 27 min. video 'teaser' to help me obtain the FUNDING needed TO COMPLETE THE STORY - by filming the LAST chapter - RE-VISITING the racers AFTER 10 YEARS and bringing the viewers up to date - SEEING WHAT THEY ARE UP TO NOW.
The last chapter of JOSH HERRIN'S unique & uncommon success however can only be filmed by FOLLOWING HIM to Europe & WITNESSING HIS STORY UNFOLD...not only is it where HIS story's last chapter should be filmed, it ALSO allows me to film several of the AMERICAN TEENAGE RIDERS participating in various EUROPEAN JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS as well as visiting with the 2 AMERICAN EX-WORLD CHAMPIONS - KENTUCKIAN NICKY HAYDEN (MOTO GP - 2006) & TEXAN COLIN EDWARDS (WORLD SUPERBIKE - 2000 & 2002) competing in the PREMIER CLASS - MOTO GP.
Also seen in Kneedragin... among others; is 65 y/o Retired Airline Pilot & Endurance Team Owner-racer Tom Vallely, 56 y/o Retired Air Force Officer & TZ 250 racer Willard Jones, Architects & 125 racers Rebecca Henn & husband David, Novice racer - college student Sam & her Expert boyfriend Ivan, 32 y/o Atlanta Human Resources Exec., Emily Sobber, NASCAR Public Relations Exec. Nicole & her Florida P.D. Sheriff husband Jeff, Adrian, an M.D., mother of 2 & passenger - also known as the monkey - in her husbands racing sidecar rig, Wisconsin Motorcycle Dealer & TZ 250 racer Mark Stiles w/18 y/o - 125 racer - daughter Meghan, 125 racers 15 y/o Ryan Clay & 14 y/o Josh Herrin.
