USA: LEXINGTON: 1ST WOMAN ENTERS VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE
English/Nat
A six-month ordeal began on Wednesday for the first women to enter the Virginia Military Institute in the United States.
They -- and their fellow freshmen -- underwent the ritual known as the rat line - a gruelling initiation is designed to push the cadets, known as 'rats' to their limit.
The presence of women at the formerly all-male institute is controversial - 30 dead rats and a sign reading Save the Males were found on the parade ground prior to the initiation.
The nearly 460 freshmen lined up early Tuesday afternoon to begin the rat line, a six-month ordeal that is intended to test their physical, mental and emotional endurance.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Rats, look at the men which stand before you. They are your cadre. They represent the essence of V-M-I. They are the athletes who have sacrificed on the field, the scholars who have excelled in the classroom, and the citizen-soldiers who possess the utmost in military proficiency.
SUPER CAPTION: Michael Lorence, Regimental Executive Officer
The cadets, including the 30 women who enrolled Monday, faced screaming upperclassmen drillmasters.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
From these men, you will learn everything of which you need to survive here. You will not fail them and you have no choice because they will teach and you will learn.
SUPER CAPTION: Michael Lorence, Regimental Executive Officer
V-M-I officials for 14 months have prepared to comply with a U-S Supreme Court ruling that the state-supported school must admit women.
Cadets have been trained how to avoid sexually harassing female rats without compromising the institute's harsh regime.
Upperclassmen say the presence of women does not alter the rigours of the rat line.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
It wasn't different at all. You say we getting that same knot and the reason why we get that is because we've all gone through it. It was pretty intense today and it's the same as what I had it. Yes ma'am.
SUPER CAPTION: Kevin Trujillo, Senior Class President
They say the cadets are not affected by the morning's discovery of 30 dead laboratory rats on the parade grounds.
The rats may have been left as a prank by students at rival Washington and Lee University, whose campus is adjacent to V-M-I.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
The people outside this barracks can do whatever they want, the media can say whatever they want, the press can say whatever they want, the people who oppose integration can say whatever they want. What happens inside the four walls of these barracks is what we have control over and they can't put a finger on it.
SUPER CAPTION: Michael Lorence, Regimental Executive Officer
V-M-I is trying to avoid the embarrassment The Citadel suffered in 1995 when Shannon Faulkner became the first woman to enter there.
The South Carolina school was the only other state military school to exclude women.
Faulkner dropped out after one week, citing stress and her isolation as the only woman in a hostile male corps.
Four more women joined The Citadel last August, but two dropped out in January alleging harassment by male upperclassmen.

Living in Virginia: The Ratline
As students (Rats) enter Virginia Military Institute (VMI) -- the nation's first state-supported military college -- they must adjust to the physical and psychological challenges designed to test their stamina, courage, and resolve.
AnyCollege.com: Virginia Military Institute
VMI is a place where traditions loom large. That's to be expected. With its rich history of challenges, achievements, and prominent alumni, VMI has made its mark over and over again. Cadets and alumni have written history -- some of it small, some of it of international proportions.

USA: VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE FORCED TO TAKE ITS 1ST FEMALE CADETS
English/Nat
In the wake of Shannon Faulkner's failed attempt to break the gender barrier at the Citadel, another all-male U.S. military college has been forced to take in it's first female cadets.
However, the Virginia Military Institute has come up with a way of safeguarding 150 years of tradition - its put the women on a campus two hours away.
Faced with a court order to break its 150-year men-only tradition, the Virginia Military Institute (VMI), came up with novel way of complying with the law.
Meet the members of the Class of 1999.
Although technically part of the VMI, their base is a two-hour drive from their male colleagues.
But these women, under-going a gruelling four-day preliminary leadership programme, don't seem to mind.
SOUNDBITE:
Whether it be a coeducational setting or a single sex setting, we know that for a number of women a single sex setting is the most appropriate choice they can make.
SUPER CAPTION: Dr. Brenda L. Bryant, Director of Virginia Women's Institute for Leadership
Bryant believes that her charges will get more out of the course if they are kept away from the men.
The 42 women in the leadership program go through a rigorous week-long training program before classes start in September.
The emphasis here is on positive encouragement for the female cadets, as opposed to the traditional intimidating atmosphere at the VMI.
Their policy is `build them up', not `pull them down'.
The VMI readily admits that it would not have changed its status quo if not for the court action, and remains proud of its all-male tradition.
SOUNDBITE:
If the complaint had not been brought to the Justice Department and the Justice Department had not filed suit, Certainly we would have wanted to maintain our all male status and that's still what we want to do.
SUPER CAPTION: Lt. Colonel Mike Strickler VMI Spokesman
The policy is strongly supported by the male VMI cadets. For them, segregation of the sexes is the only way to go.
SOUNDBITE:
It's not so much as a tradition being broken as it would disrupt what we try to do here. For a woman to come into this system it would change the system. It would not be the same process that she wanted.
SUPER CAPTION: Turner Perrow VMI Cadet
The women, who are housed at college two hours away, only visit the VMI campus occasionally.
Most seem too occupied in getting the most out of their course to worry about the politics of their situation.
SOUNDBITE:
I've learned to play as a team instead of as an individual and learn to like, great, for I mean, these people are great. They're so supportive and so they show me that I can do things even if I don't think I can.
SUPER CAPTION: Janet Kreckman V.W.I.L. Cadet
While the women strive for equality within the system, the programs are markedly different.
However, that may change. With a Supreme Court decision looming, full integration may still occur and the VMI may yet be forced to fully open its doors to women.
