Visby City Wall (Swedish: Visby ringmur, sometimes Visby stadsmur) is a medievaldefensive wall surrounding the Swedish town of Visby on the island of Gotland. As the strongest, most extensive, and best preserved medieval city wall in Scandinavia, the wall forms an important and integral part of Visby World Heritage Site.

Visby is a city of both roses and ruins and capital of the Baltic island of Gotland in south east Sweden. It is one of the most important Hanse towns with a well conserved mediaeval cityscape. Since 1270, and for a hundred and fifty years, construction of a long mediaeval wall, up to ten metres high, was undertaken around the historic city centre. However, the residents of the city did not want to protect themselves from enemies from abroad, but the attacks of farmers on the island, to whom access to the city was prohibited. The mainly German Hanse merchants were very wealthy and did not wish to share their good fortune with anyone else.Construction continued unabated and a modern city of the Middle Ages was created with more, and higher, stone buildings than anywhere else in Sweden. In the little square with its old town hall, decisions of the council were formerly proclaimed… and the building of Gamla Apoteket shines out in all of its mediaeval splendour. The prevailing townscape is due to a law of the nineteenth century: for the restoration and preservation of the mediaeval buildings, property owners were exempted from paying tax. Visby was designated as a World Cultural Heritage Site in 1995 and is undoubtedly a priceless gem of the Middle Ages.

Im Juni 2017 startete die Aida-„Cara“ von Kiel aus zu einer Reise über die Ostsee. Erste Station war die schwedische Insel Gotland mit Visby, dem Hauptort der Insel und Bischofssitz. In der Mitte des 12. Jahrhunderts entwickelte sich Visby zum führenden Handelshafen des Ostseeraumes. Längst sind in- und ausländische Touristen ein wichtiger Wirtschaftszweig. Die Stadt gehört zu den sehenswertesten Städten in Schweden, wozu auch der Dom zu Visby, ursprünglich Sankt-Maria-Kirche aus dem 13. Jahrhundert, sowie einige der zahlreichen Kirchenruinen wie St. Karin, St. Nikolaus oder das Kloster Solberga samt dem Museum Gotlands Fornsal beitragen. Das älteste erhaltene Gebäude der Stadt ist „Kruttornet“ (der „Pulverturm“), nach 1151 angelegt.
Die besondere Attraktion ist die fast vollständig erhaltene 3,6 Kilometer lange mittelalterliche Stadtmauer mit der Ruine der Visborg. Schon 1805 wurde die „Hansestadt Visby“ unter Denkmalschutz gestellt, seit 1995 ist sie mit ihren zahlreichen mittelalterlichen Bauten Teil des Weltkulturerbes der UNESCO.
Seit 1984 findet jedes Jahr Anfang August – stets in der 32. Kalenderwoche – auf Gotland und vor allem in Visby die Medeltidsveckan (Mittelalterwoche) statt, zu der Living-History-Darsteller aus ganz Europa anreisen. Die Festwoche mit großem historischen Spektakel, Ritterturnieren, Konzerten, mittelalterlichem Markt und anderen Kulturveranstaltungen erinnert an die Eroberung der Stadt und der Insel Gotland durch den dänischen König Waldemar IV. When you visit Visby, be sure to tour the botanical gardens and then go a little further west to the magnificent western wall seen in the photo above. Visby is famous for its 16 ancient churches, but all are in ruins except for the Cathedral of St. Mary's, which has been beautifully restored. The walls of some of the churches are still standing and are a good reminder of ancient times.

I recently spent a week in beautiful Visby on the Swedish island of Gotland, in the Baltic Sea. I will make lots of videos from there, of course :-) but it'll take me forever to get around to uploading them. So I decided to make a kind of teaser video just for now, to show you a little bit of it. It's an absolutely gorgeous place and it has the most sunny days in all of Sweden. We had stellar weather our entire stay. It was my second time there and I will definitely be back. :-)
