Saxon Fortified Church from Viscri (Biserica sasesca fortificata din Viscri) ✔
➤Viscri is only one of the Saxon villages of Transylvania. Of course, is a special one, due to his great fortified church which is part of UNESCO World Heritage.
When the Saxons came here, at the end of 12th century, they have found a little chappel, which suffered transformations during the time. The actual church of Viscri is a romanesque chapel enlarged in the early 16th century to form a single-nave church, with a fortified storey resting on semicircular arches supported by massive buttresses; walls strengthened in the 17th century (UNESCO description). A very interesting museum is part of the citadel.
Still now, Viscri is a small village, with no more than 500 inhabitants, from which only about 27 are Saxons. People say that Viscri hide the most picturesque fortified church of the Saxons from Transylvania.
Viscri is also known due to the great job in restoring done by the Mihai Eminescu Trust, the foundation patroned by The Prince of Wales.

Romania HiLites: Viscri, A Transylvanian Saxon Fortified Church
The place is first mentioned in a document from around 1400 under the name Alba Ecclesia. The Latin form of the name corresponds to the old name Vyskirch, the Saxon Waiskirich and the Hungarian Szószfeheregyhaza. The Romanian name Vicri derives from the Saxon name. Politically Deutsch-Weisskirch became a free commune with the disempowerment of the Graf dynasty. This occurred in the second half of the 15th century at the latest..
In 1999, the fortified church and the village were included, together with six other places in southern Transylvania, in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List thus acknowledging an ensemble which, in terms of its settlement structure, the structure of the parcels of land as well as the architecture of the buildings and their fittings, has almost completely preserved the character of a typical Saxon Transylvanian village over a period of centuries. The standard type of farmstead remained the same from the time of the wooden buildings over and beyond the appearance of the first stone ones at the end of the 17th century up until the first third of the 20th century. The few younger buildings inconspicuously blend in with the general appearance of the village.
Situated above this is the castle forecourt with the former house of the castle custodian which was originally integrated in the outer ring wall of the fortification. This wall, of which only parts have survived, was built in the second half of the 17th or in the first half of the 18th century. In terms of its position, the church of Deutsch-Weisskirch is a hill cas¬tle, from the point of view of its construction and function it is, like most Transylvanian-Saxon defensible churches, a so-called fortified church, i.e. a church within a ring wall defended by towers.

Viscri - village, fortified church, museum - Brasov, Romania
One of the most interesting Saxon fortified churches is in Viscri. Located on top of a hill that towers above the area, the church is ringed by two rows of walls and has 4 defensive towers, one of which is particularly huge, erected in 1494. Traveling to Viscri is possible from Rupea, a town located between the cities of Brasov and Sighisoara, along 7-kms of unpaved road. Today Viscri is home to only 25 Saxons, as most of them left for Germany, following the fall of the communist regime. Many of the Saxon deserted houses were in danger of collapse, though a number of them have been rescued thanks to Prince Charles and the London-based Mihai Eminescu Trust, who financially supported their restoration.
As Viscri has become a tourist attraction, the locals have taken an increasing interest in agricultural tourism. Local families can accommodate up to 50 people. The most interesting thing here is that everything they offer their guests is 100 % natural and locally produced: home baked bread, meat from own bred pigs, cows and chicken, home made cheese, plum brandy and wine.
The church in Viscri holds mass fortnightly and houses a museum of Saxon traditions. Every two years, the ethnic Saxons who left Romania years ago return for a reunion that has become traditional.
Viscri is UNESCO heritage.

With a history that goes back to the 12th century, Viscri is today one of Romania’s most famous villages. Prince Charles’ repeated visits, its UNESCO World Heritage fortified church and the ceaseless activity of the local foundation Mihai Eminescu Trust have helped this small village dust off its last decades of oblivion. Viscri is right now one of Romania’s most popular off the beaten track attractions with plenty of activities for all those curious to discover the typical rural life from Transylvania.
The construction of the fortified church in the village center began in 1100 A.D., a fact confirmed by the tombstone inscription in the cemetery that surrounds the church. In 1185, Saxons colonized the area settling in the south-east of Transylvania. The Viscri settlement was officially named in 1400 – it was given the Latin title of Alba Ecclesia, or “White Church.”’
The church gave the village its name – as it was one of the most impressive in all Transylvania. The first towers were added around 1525. In the 18th century, a defensive wall and a covered passageway were built. An altar was added in 19th century with a painting as its centerpiece – “The Blessing of the Children,” by Rupean painter J. Paukratz.
Discover the wonderful craft and culinary traditions of this timeless village.

Viscri the oldest Saxon village in Transylvania, Romania
Viscri is one of the oldest villages in Brasov county and all of Transylvania, its beginning being lost in time, although the first mentioning appears in the 15th century. People in Viscri village still live from their farming and animal growing, although the development of tourism has introduced a new activity in the village.
Since 2002 Viscri village has also been included in the Routard guides in France and has made itself known more and more. Prince Charles of England himself, who owns a house in Viscri is a great supporter of sustainable architecture and is fascinated by it and strongly supported its rebirth.

Romania Saxon Village ???????? Villages With Fortified Churches in Transylvania
The Saxon villages of Transylvania appeared in the twelfth century when the Kings of Hungary settled German colonists in the area. They had a special status among nations in the province and their civilisation managed to survive and thrive, forming a very strong community of farmers, artisans and merchants. Being situated in a region constantly under the threat of the Ottoman and Tatar invasions, they built fortifications of different sizes. The most important towns were fully fortified, and the smaller communities created fortifications centered on the church, where they added defensive towers and storehouses to keep their most valuable goods and to help them withstand long sieges.
