According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Ganga took the form of a river to absolve the sins of King Bhagiratha's predecessors, following his severe penance of several centuries.
According to this legend, King Sagar, after slaying the demons on earth decided to stage an Ashwamedha Yajna as a proclamation of his supremacy. The horse which was to be taken on an uninterrupted journey around the earth was to be accompanied by the King's 60,000 sons born to Queen Sumati and one son Asamanja born of the second queen Kesani. Indra, supreme ruler of the gods feared that he might be deprived of his celestial throne if the 'Yagya' (worship with fire) succeeded and then took away the horse and tied it to the ashram of Sage Kapil, who was then in deep meditation. The sons of the King Sagara searched for the horse and finally found it tied near the meditating sage. Sixty thousand angry sons of King Sagara stormed the ashram of sage Kapil. When he opened his eyes, the 60,000 sons had all perished, by the curse of sage Kapil. Bhagiratha, the grandson of King Sagar, is believed to have meditated to please the Goddess Ganga enough to cleanse the ashes of his ancestors, and liberate their souls, granting them salvation or Moksha.

What Makes Kedarnath and Kashi so Powerful? | Sadhguru
Sadhguru speaks of Kedarnath, Tapovan, Kashi and Gupt Kashi, and about the specific nature of each of these spaces.
Kailash Thro the Mystic Eye.. stay tuned with Headlines Today.. Every Sat & Sun 7.30am to watch this full Episode
**********
Transcript:
Sadhguru: Now, she is talking about overwhelming experiences in certain places, especially Guptakashi and Tapovan. If I could explain what is the basis of these experiences… These are two different kinds of spaces - Guptakashi and Tapovan. Tapovan, maybe because of the altitude you felt light-headed. It is a place which has been graced by many wonderful beings. Wherever they go, they leave their eggs, that’s their way of life. Now, if you leave your eggs in Bombay or in New York City or anywhere else, people will trample on it and go because they won’t have the sense to recognize what’s been left around. So, they go and leave their eggs, you know… have you… I don’t know if you have done this, most of you might not have done this, maybe a few of you. If you ever track birds, if you track birds, most of you won’t believe if you open your eyes and look around where you were trekking on the side, a cluster of stones… in that there were a couple of eggs. The birds would have laid their eggs right there.
October is a little late, they have all hatched. If you went to Himalayas, let’s say in May-June-July, you will see this, but most of you wouldn’t see it because it would lay its eggs in such a way that even the predators should not see it. What they see they pick up, what they do not see will fly. Or in South India, I don’t know much about the North American birds, I am just getting familiar with the human beings. [All Laugh] They are… quite a birds they are. If you, between February and April, if you just walk on the dried tracks in South India, you will see in how many incredible ways the birds would have found nests, the birds which cannot build their own nests. Those birds which can build their own nests, they build wonderful nests in the trees and do it. The other birds who are not capable of architecture, such birds, they will find such small niches. Niches here and there - in stones, in pieces of wood, in mud, wherever and they will lay their eggs in such a way, even if you are looking for it, you can’t find it. In such a beautiful way they will arrange themselves, because they want the eggs to hatch. As I said, what the predators find becomes food, what the predators don’t find, fly.
So the yogis also, people who have the privilege and the burden of carrying a dimension which is not in the experience of common people… also wherever they sit and stand they lay their eggs, but why they always moved to hilly regions? Certain spaces which are identified as sacred is simply so that these eggs are not trampled upon, but rather experienced, made use of, so that something will fly out of it. So they choose places, Tapovan has been one bird’s nest where many, many yogis have chosen to lay their eggs, but the biggest pit of eggs is probably the Kedar. Kedar, every kind of bird laid its eggs, multicolored, and they gotten all mixed up.

Char Dham Temple Name And Photo Gangotri, Badrinath, Yamunotri and Kedarnath
Char Dham Temple Name And Photo in Himalayan Mountains Details . Char Dham is the Hindu religion destination and the holy center of Gangotri, Badrinath, Yamunotri and Kedarnath.
History Of Gangotri Temple in Hindi | Chardham Tour
History Of Gangotri Temple is a town and a Nagar Panchayat (municipality) Uttarkashi district in India. It is a Hindu pilgrim city on the banks of river Bhagirathi and on the origin of river Ganga River. It is at the height of 3,100 meters (10,200 ft.), on the Greater Himalayan Range. According to popular Hindu mythology, it was here that Goddess came to Ganga when Lord Shiva released a powerful river from the locks of her hair.
Gangotri, origin of river Ganges and seat of Goddess Ganga, is one of four places in four char Dham pilgrimage journeys. The original Gangotri temple was constructed by General Amar Singh Thapa of Nepal. River is called Bhagirathi on the source and Devprayag is called Ganga (Ganga), where it meets the Alaknanda. The origin of the holy river is on Gaumukh, situated in the Gangotri Glacier, and is a 19 km journey from Gangotri.
Places to Visit Gangotri Temple
Bhagirath Shila is considered as a holy rock where King Bhagirath had prayed to Lord Shiva. Pandav cave is situated 1.5 km from Gangotri, where the Pandavas have taken notice and the route is rested in Kailash. Pilgrims must climb up to Pandav cave.
In the pilgrimage yatra of Chhota Char Dham, the visit of Gangotri is often followed by Yamunotri (located in the western region of the Garhwal hills). Pilgrims usually made Uttarkashi as their base camp. The time of Gangotri temple from Uttarkashi is about 4 hours on the road.
Gangotri and Gomukh Full Video
Gangotri is situated high on Himalayas about 3200 meters above sea level. The place is near Gomukh glacier where the river Ganga origins. Gangotri is famous for Gangamata Temple where the river Ganga is worshiped as a Goddess. Because of cold climate the temple remains closed for six months during winter. During winter the whole area remains covered with ice. Nobody lives here during winter. The residents move away to places like Uttarkashi situated at lower altitude. The goddess in Gangotri temple also moves to Uttarkashi. The temple opens on Akhyaya Tritiya for six months during the summer. Tourists start flowing during summer six months.
The river Ganga in Gangotri is named as Bhagirathi. As the water flows from melting of ice the water of the river is extremely cold. We took a bath in the river with extreme difficulty. The body was like freezing when coming in contact with water. The current of water was also very fast. We also visited other interesting places like suryakunda, gourikunda and gomukh which are shown in detail in the video.
While staying in Gangotri, we went for a local sight seeing. We walked towards Pandav gupha and saw Suryakunda, a massive waterfall. We also visited Gourikunda and Gourisila, an exciting spot near Gangotri, where water is going through narrow gorge deep inside huge stones.
The most adventurous journey was from Gangotri to Gomukh. We started our trekking from Gangotri in the morning. Gangotri to Gomukh is 18 kms. The way was all hilly, full of stones and water. We crossed charbasa and reached bhojbasa in the afternoon. We stayed in lalbaba ashram. It was a nice place with beautiful icy hill views. Next morning we visited Gomukh glacier, the place where Ganga flows- the birth place of Ganga. It is one of the most sacred places in Hindu religious belief. The water was ice cold with lots of solid ice floating on the river. The views of Himalayan Mountains were breathtaking which you can see in the video.
While coming back from Gangotri we halted at Uttarkashi. Uttarkashi is about 100 kms from Gangotri which took about 5 hours of painful bus journey. Uttarkashi is steep down from Gangotri. While Gangotri is about 3200 mtrs above sea level Uttarkashi is about 1200 mtrs above sea level. The main attraction of Uttarkashi is Kashi Vishwanath Temple. The temple, although small, is as famous as the Vishwanath temple of Varanasi.

Ganga Aarti Varanasi India *HD* - Holy River Ganges Hindu Worship Ritual
Ganga Aarti Varanasi (Benaras, Kashi), India - The video shows the Hindu religious ritual of worship for the holy river Ganges. The ceremony happens everyday from 6.30 -7.30 pm at Dashashwamedh Ghat on the Ganges river banks. A must watch event while in Varanasi, and is enjoyed by locals and tourists from all over the world.
Dashashwamedh Ghat (दशाश्वमेध घाट) is the main ghat in Varanasi on the Ganges River. It is located close to Vishwanath Temple and is probably the most spectacular ghat. Two Hindu mythologies are associated with it: According to one, Lord Brahma created it to welcome Lord Shiva. According to another legend, Lord Brahma sacrificed ten horses during Dasa -Ashwamedha yajna performed here.
Aarti is said to have descended from the Vedic concept of fire rituals, or homa. In the traditional Aarti ceremony, the flower represents the earth (solidity), the water and accompanying handkerchief correspond with the water element (liquidity), the lamp or candle represents the fire component (heat), the peacock fan conveys the precious quality of air (movement), and the yak-tail fan represents the subtle form of ether (space). The incense represents a purified state of mind, and one's intelligence is offered through the adherence to rules of timing and order of offerings. Thus, one's entire existence and all facets of material creation are symbolically offered to the Lord via the Aarti ceremony. The word may also refer to the traditional Hindu devotional song that is sung during the ritual.
Varanasi is a city on the banks of the Ganges (Ganga) in Uttar Pradesh, 320 kilometres (200 mi) southeast of the state capital, Lucknow. It is the holiest of the seven sacred cities (Sapta Puri) in Hinduism and Jainism, and played an important role in the development of Buddhism. Some Hindus believe that death at Varanasi brings salvation. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Varanasi is also known as the favourite city of the Hindu deity Lord Shiva as it has been mentioned in the Rigveda that this city at older times was known as Kashi or Shiv ki Nagri.
