For higher education in technology there is polytechnich institute situated in joshiyara around 3-4 km away from main city. It has an average elevation of 1,165 metres (4,436 feet). Most of the terrain is hilly. There are many small and big rivers in Uttarkashi district. The Yamuna and the Ganges (Bhagirathi) are biggest and holiest among them, their origin is Yamunotri and Gangotri (Gomukh) respectively. Asi ganga and jad ganga are some of the tributaries of the Ganges.

Kashi Vishwanath temple in Uttarkashi
In the center of Uttarkashi, in a buzzing market is a beautiful temple of Lord Vishwanath which is worth a visit. Lord Vishwanath in the form of a shiva-linga has been residing in the Vishwanath temple in Uttarakashi in deep meditation since time immemorial, showering his blessings on all the living beings. Unlike the other Shiva temples, the shivalinga in this temple leans towards the South direction. The garbha-griha or sanctum sanctorum also houses the Deities of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Parvathi Devi.
The Shiva Linga of Lord Vishwanath was installed by Lord Parashurama. The present temple was constructed by Queen of Tehri – Khaneti Devi, the wife of Sudarshan Shah in the year 1857 AD. The stone temple is built in the Katyuri style and sits on a rock foundation which is a depiction of the local Himalayan architecture.

Sadhguru answers why Kedarnath and kashi are so powerfull spaces ?
Sadhguru speaks of Ancient temples in india - Kedarnath , Kashi vishwanath temple , Tapovan, Kashi and Gupt Kashi, and about the specific nature of each of these spaces.
Kailash Through the Mystic Eye.
Sadhguru: Now, she is talking about overwhelming experiences in certain places, especially Guptakashi and Tapovan. If I could explain what is the basis of these experiences… These are two different kinds of spaces - Guptakashi and Tapovan. Tapovan, maybe because of the altitude you felt light-headed. It is a place which has been graced by many wonderful beings. Wherever they go, they leave their eggs, that’s their way of life. Now, if you leave your eggs in Bombay or in New York City or anywhere else, people will trample on it and go because they won’t have the sense to recognize what’s been left around. So, they go and leave their eggs, you know… have you… I don’t know if you have done this, most of you might not have done this, maybe a few of you. If you ever track birds, if you track birds, most of you won’t believe if you open your eyes and look around where you were trekking on the side, a cluster of stones… in that there were a couple of eggs. The birds would have laid their eggs right there.
October is a little late, they have all hatched. If you went to Himalayas, let’s say in May-June-July, you will see this, but most of you wouldn’t see it because it would lay its eggs in such a way that even the predators should not see it. What they see they pick up, what they do not see will fly. Or in South India, I don’t know much about the North American birds, I am just getting familiar with the human beings. [All Laugh] They are… quite a birds they are. If you, between February and April, if you just walk on the dried tracks in South India, you will see in how many incredible ways the birds would have found nests, the birds which cannot build their own nests. Those birds which can build their own nests, they build wonderful nests in the trees and do it. The other birds who are not capable of architecture, such birds, they will find such small niches. Niches here and there - in stones, in pieces of wood, in mud, wherever and they will lay their eggs in such a way, even if you are looking for it, you can’t find it. In such a beautiful way they will arrange themselves, because they want the eggs to hatch. As I said, what the predators find becomes food, what the predators don’t find, fly.
So the yogis also, people who have the privilege and the burden of carrying a dimension which is not in the experience of common people… also wherever they sit and stand they lay their eggs, but why they always moved to hilly regions? Certain spaces which are identified as sacred is simply so that these eggs are not trampled upon, but rather experienced, made use of, so that something will fly out of it. So they choose places, Tapovan has been one bird’s nest where many, many yogis have chosen to lay their eggs, but the biggest pit of eggs is probably the Kedar. Kedar, every kind of bird laid its eggs, multicolored, and they gotten all mixed up.
Yogi, mystic and visionary, Sadhguru is a spiritual master with a difference. An arresting blend of profundity and pragmatism, his life and work serves as a reminder that yoga is a contemporary science, vitally relevant to our times.

The brave little Manikarnika temple, Uttarkashi
So the brave little temple has lost the battle!
Just yesterday, we completed this short clip on the Manikarnika Temple in Uttarkashi, celebrating its bravery and survival through the worst of the foods in Uttarakhand. Yesterday, sadly, the temple finally got swept away... RIP, temple!
Uttarakhand, August 2: The famous Manikarnika Temple on the banks of Bhagirathi was swept away by the swirling waters of the river in the wee hours on Friday even as fresh attempts were launched to trace Almora SDM Ajay Arora, who slipped off a makeshift bridge and fell into the Mandakini river. Manikarnika Temple, a favourite destination for devotees during the month of 'Shravan' was swept away by the waters of Bhagirathi as incessant rains lashed Uttarkashi on Thursday night, officials said. However, no one was hurt as the temple was empty at the time of the incident, its priest Suresh Shastri said. The temple was built after the 1991 earthquake in Uttarkashi which had killed a large number of people.

Kashi Vishwanath Temple Uttarkashi
Kashi Vishwanath Temple Uttarkashi is one of the most sacred temples in Uttarakhand, dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is present on the banks of river Bhagirathi and is one of the Char Dham Yatra destinations within Uttarakhand. The Shiva lingam here is 56cm in height and is tilted towards South.
The lingam is a swayambhu, that is, the lord has manifested the lingam himself. During the Magh mela, devotees visit the temple to take a holy dip in river Bhagirathi.

uttarkashi vishwanath temple and sceneries (2007)
We halted in Uttarkashi while coming back from Gangotri. Uttarkashi is steep down from Gangotri. While Gangotri is about 3200 mtrs above sea level Uttarkashi about 1200 mtrs above sea level. This is sorrounded by Himalayan mountains at all sides. We visited Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Hanuman temple, Ekadasha Rudra Temple, Kali temple, Kedarnath temple and many other temples in Uttarkashi. The hanging bridges on ganges are very attractive. One should halt a day here to enjoy the beauty of this place while going to Gangotri.
