Cape Town City Missions Homes: Transforming South Africa
Cape Town City Mission Homes has dozens of facilities serving thousands from low-income communities in Cape Town
Thought Leader presents: Red Room Art Gallery Cape Town
I was there when Maik Kobald found the property that would later house the construct and essence of his vision, the vivid and lucid fruit of his dreams- the throbbing, tangible reality that became Red Room. The only house for sale in that road, atop a beautiful estate in Hout Bay, Cape Town, found late one breezy Sunday afternoon, and priced just within Maik’s proposed budget is where dreams met destiny and Red Room was birthed.
It was good to be there at the beginning of this dream, and magic to return years later to see Maik’s vision come to vibrant and visceral fruition.
Maik speaks of ‘the 4 hour work week’ and of living one’s dreams. Inspired by author Tim Ferris’ #1 New York Times best- selling book, Maik took the leap from making a living to having a life after leaving corporate life to develop his passion for buying and selling art, turning this once-hobby into a successful way of life.
Of course, hard work, vision, passion and determination are all part of turning one’s dreams into reality and Maik’s Red Room is testament to the rewards of having the courage to make that choice and having the faith to follow through with it. When Maik speaks about art, his passion is palpable and coupled with his vision and shrewd eye for investment art that keeps and increases its value, makes him a valuable voice in the world of contemporary South African art.

#1000PrintsNoFootPrints - Be Informed
This is an Informative documentary emphasising the progression of the 1000PrintsNoFootprints Crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo, as the dream slowly unfolds and blooms into a tangible reality. The goal, to raise R1million rand to buy an 11-hectare piece of land near Knysna, South Africa. Here, you can observe the evolution of the “Reforestation and Sustainable Creative Retreat Vision” from the birth of an idea, to watching it flower and radiate its beauty to the rest of the world.
This video outlines the frustrations that inspired our drive to take action, and create the change we wish to see in this world. Gradually, we shift from addressing the issues of our planet to possible solutions we can approach, in order to tackle the obstacles that hinder us from being the responsible, conscientious human beings we have the potential to be. We continue to persist in seeking new means to overcome the challenges we face in creating the ideal, harmonious, world in which we envision ourselves to live in.
We, Chris Auret & Cassandra Hellberg, delve into an in-depth review of the progression of the campaign from finding the land, to the Launch, up to today (17 November) with our current status of 76%. With the deadline fast approaching in 5 days time, the urgency for support and contributions is of top-priority right now. It is ALL or Nothing. Being a fixed-funding campaign, all contributors will be reimbursed, and we will loose all contributions, if we don’t reach our goal by the deadline date (21 November).
In response to our frustrations, we put forward a basic solution in addressing these issues by proposing the idea of a “Reforestation and Sustainable Creative Retreat Vision” and what are our intentions for the use of the Land. Over the last 3 months, Chris Auret and the Team have been working persistently in making this vision manifest into a reality, by launching the campaign and participating in numerous activities since. These include the 10 day MUTI Gallery exhibition, a Pop-up Gallery at the Hout Bay Market, CTV’s live interview on Ekse (a youth program), Chris being a guest speaker at PechaKucha, an article featured in the Sunday Times Neighbourhood Lifestyle section and a live interview on Bush Radio.
We also provide our objectives for the Land and a rough timeline of how we plan to slowly but surely achieve these objectives, with the helping hands of the continuously growing community. Step by Step, we will embark with the Reforestation and Revival of the Indigenous Forest Project, while steadily creating the Sustainable Creative Community Retreat.
We also explain the concept of the Rewards/Perks, within the Crowdfunding platform, in exchange for contributions as supporting donors to our campaign. Rewards, come in all shapes and sizes, depending on the amount of your contribution with free distributed anywhere in the world. These Perks range from Eco-Friendly A3 Prints of your choice from the catalogue of Art by Chris Auret and Friends, to Poetry, Music and commissioned paintings by Chris Auret himself. And of course there is the invitation to visit the Land in the future and immerse yourself into the Dream we are gradually creating.
We hope these actions can further your vision for what we have going on and assure you of our competence and trust to be successful, firstly in obtaining the land and then with our work on the land in the future! It will not only benefit us but benefit you and our human race as a whole as we move towards a more sustainable future for the generations to follow in our wake.
So we invite you to be a part of our vision, either by contributing financially or by spreading our cause far and wide to find those willing and able. With the Deadline on the 21st of November, we need all the support we can get! Thank you a million times over in advance for your belief and support in our vision, and the passion and commitment to be more conscious, responsible human beings, in the revolution to make this world a better place.
LET’S DO THIS!

UBuntu Bridge Mandela Day Community Event 2012
FUN XHOSA WORKSHOPS and a FREE ONLINE XHOSA COURSE at
On 18 July, 2012, Madiba's 94th birthday, UBuntu Bridge organised a community day with a difference in Imizamo Yethu, Hout Bay, a.k.a. Mandela Park.
With a focus on Xhosa language learning for the volunteers, we then spent time with the kids from Ikhaya Lethemba creche planting trees, doing yoga, reading practice and finally singing Happy Birthday to Nelson Mandela in his home language, isiXhosa.
Nelson Mandela in one of his first public appearances in office, on May 10 1994, strongly urged all the people of South Africa to learn each other's languages:
This is the best way to contribute to nation building and reconciliation,
Mandela said. Those among us who do not know Afrikaans must now learn to study this language. Those among us who do not know Zulu, Xhosa and Sotho must now learn to study these languages.
UBuntu Bridge hopes to inspire people to heed Madiba's call, and to do it in a fun and convenient way that brings prosperity to many communities on all levels of society.

Words at War: Combined Operations / They Call It Pacific / The Last Days of Sevastopol
The Siege of Sevastopol took place on the Eastern Front of the Second World War. The campaign was fought by the Axis powers of Germany, Romania and Italy against the Soviet Union for control of Sevastopol, a port in Crimea on the Black Sea. On 22 June 1941 the Axis invaded the Soviet Union under Operation Barbarossa. The Axis land forces reached Crimea in the autumn, 1941, and overran the area. The only objective not in Axis hands was Sevastopol. Several attempts were made to secure the city in October and November 1941. A major attack was planned for late November, but bad weather and heavy rains delayed the Axis attack until 17 December 1941. Under the command of Erich von Manstein, the Axis forces were unable to capture Sevastopol in the first stage of operations. The Soviets launched an amphibious landing on the Crimean peninsula at Kerch in December 1941, to relieve the siege and force the Axis to divert forces to defend their gains. The operation saved Sevastopol for the time being, but the landing was checked and repulsed in May 1942.
At Sevastopol the Axis opted to conduct a siege until the summer, 1942, at which point they attacked the encircled Soviet forces by land, sea and air. On 2 June 1942, the Axis began their operation, codenamed Störfang (Sturgeon Catch). The Soviet Red Army and Black Sea Fleet held out for weeks under intense Axis bombardment. The German Air Force (Luftwaffe) played a vital part in the siege. The Luftwaffe made up for a shortage of Axis artillery, providing highly effective aerial bombardment in support of the ground forces. Finally, on the 4 July 1942, the remaining Soviet forces surrendered and the Axis seized the port. Both sides had suffered considerable losses during the siege.
With the Soviet forces neutralised, the Axis refocused their attention on the major summer campaign of that year, Operation Blue and the advance to the Caucasus oil fields.

#1000PrintsNoFootPrints UPDATE
Since it's launch on 22 September off Indiegogo, the 1000PrintsNoFootPrints Campaign has been BUSY to say the least.
This video is a made up of an interview from Cape Town TV's youth program, Ekse (Filmed 5 October) with myself and Cassandra Hellberg. It outlines the aims and elements of the campaign while the footage itself shows how we managed to accomplish everything we set out to do and more in the weeks to follow the interview, with the launch of the Online and Physical exhibition of Print Rewards for donations. IF THIS IS POSSIBLE WITH JUST ONE MONTH, IMAGINE OUR POSSIBILITIES WITH A LIFETIME OF WORK/PLAY ON THE LAND!
The Physical exhibition (13 - 23 October) became a small metaphor for the land itself, housing everything from Yoga, Meditation, Documentary Screenings, Short & Sweet Pop-Up Cinema nights, an evening of Poetry Reading, Musical Jams, Fire Poi, Conversation and Silence. I took a vow of silence throughout the 10 days, only breaking it to deal with my car being stolen and found on day 6 and 8.
Now, the Physical show is On the Move. To keep up with these movements, watch the Indiegogo Update Tab or follow me on Instagram with @chris_auret or Facebook with @auretart.
The music in the video is from an impromtu live jam by myself and KhoisanBoy.Man (AKA Gershan Lombard) - Me on day 7 of my silence, taking a break from a 9 hour Vipassana-inspired Meditation Day (jam filmed by Cassandra Hellberg).
Other video by Nick Burton-Moore, Chris Auret and Cassandra Hellberg. Photos by Jason Paul Hermann and Semakaleng Mogoboa as well as film photos by Chris Auret & Cassandra Hellberg. Poetry reading by Gershan Lombard (4min15). Musicans involved in closing night: Astrafunk and the Space Cats, Miles Sievwright, Darren Thomas Roderick, Yaiya Rosen, and the 1000Prints extended team.
Thank you to The MUTI Gallery for letting us take over the space for 10 days and putting up with our beautiful madness, to Julia and the Short & Sweet team for screening the films, to all who helped out by walking through the door at some point, including neighbours, homeless men and woman, perfect strangers, family and friends (you know who you are). Also, a huge thank you to Stuart Ziegler for the Sounds of the Land composition.
PLEASE HELP BY EITHER DONATING WHATEVER YOU CAN OR BY SHARING THIS VIDEO AS FAR AND WIDE AS POSSIBLE! DEADLINE IS 31 OCTOBER TO RAISE R1MILLION ($70 000)!

BOOKSTORES: How to Read More Books in the Golden Age of Content
Bookstores have always driven me crazy. So much to read and so little time! And now with our lives chock full of CONTENT--Netlflix, podcasts, social media, YouTube, and the 24 hour news cycle--when the hell are we supposed to find the time to get through a book? This has haunted me for awhile now. So I decided to make a film about it, hoping to find a way through my bookstore anxiety--a way to re-balance my content diet in order to read more books.

Calling All Cars: Cop Killer / Murder Throat Cut / Drive 'Em Off the Dock
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) is the police department of the city of Los Angeles, California.
The LAPD has been copiously fictionalized in numerous movies, novels and television shows throughout its history. The department has also been associated with a number of controversies, mainly concerned with racial animosity, police brutality and police corruption.
The radio show Calling All Cars hired LAPD radio dispacher Jesse Rosenquist to be the voice of the dispatcher. Rosenquist was already famous because home radios could tune into early police radio frequencies. As the first police radio dispatcher presented to the public ear, his was the voice that actors went to when called upon for a radio dispatcher role.
The iconic television series Dragnet, with LAPD Detective Joe Friday as the primary character, was the first major media representation of the department. Real LAPD operations inspired Jack Webb to create the series and close cooperation with department officers let him make it as realistic as possible, including authentic police equipment and sound recording on-site at the police station.
Due to Dragnet's popularity, LAPD Chief Parker became, after J. Edgar Hoover, the most well known and respected law enforcement official in the nation. In the 1960s, when the LAPD under Chief Thomas Reddin expanded its community relations division and began efforts to reach out to the African-American community, Dragnet followed suit with more emphasis on internal affairs and community policing than solving crimes, the show's previous mainstay.
Several prominent representations of the LAPD and its officers in television and film include Adam-12, Blue Streak, Blue Thunder, Boomtown, The Closer, Colors, Crash, Columbo, Dark Blue, Die Hard, End of Watch, Heat, Hollywood Homicide, Hunter, Internal Affairs, Jackie Brown, L.A. Confidential, Lakeview Terrace, Law & Order: Los Angeles, Life, Numb3rs, The Shield, Southland, Speed, Street Kings, SWAT, Training Day and the Lethal Weapon, Rush Hour and Terminator film series. The LAPD is also featured in the video games Midnight Club II, Midnight Club: Los Angeles, L.A. Noire and Call of Juarez: The Cartel.
The LAPD has also been the subject of numerous novels. Elizabeth Linington used the department as her backdrop in three different series written under three different names, perhaps the most popular being those novel featuring Det. Lt. Luis Mendoza, who was introduced in the Edgar-nominated Case Pending. Joseph Wambaugh, the son of a Pittsburgh policeman, spent fourteen years in the department, using his background to write novels with authentic fictional depictions of life in the LAPD. Wambaugh also created the Emmy-winning TV anthology series Police Story. Wambaugh was also a major influence on James Ellroy, who wrote several novels about the Department set during the 1940s and 1950s, the most famous of which are probably The Black Dahlia, fictionalizing the LAPD's most famous cold case, and L.A. Confidential, which was made into a film of the same name. Both the novel and the film chronicled mass-murder and corruption inside and outside the force during the Parker era. Critic Roger Ebert indicates that the film's characters (from the 1950s) represent the choices ahead for the LAPD: assisting Hollywood limelight, aggressive policing with relaxed ethics, and a straight arrow approach.
Suspense: The Name of the Beast / The Night Reveals / Dark Journey
The Number of the Beast (Greek: Ἀριθμὸς τοῦ θηρίου, Arithmos tou Thēriou) is the numerical value of the name of the person symbolized by the beast from the sea, the first of two symbolic beasts described in chapter 13 of the Book of Revelation. In most manuscripts of the New Testament the number is 666, but the variant 616 is found in critical editions of the Greek text, such as the Novum Testamentum Graece.
Most scholars believe that the number of the beast equates to Emperor Nero, whose name in Greek when transliterated into Hebrew, retains the value of 666, whereas his Latin name transliterated into Hebrew, is 616. The mark of the beast is used to distinguish the beast's followers. Revelation 13:17 says that the mark is the name of the beast or the number of his name. Because of this, it is widely thought among dispensationalists that the mark will be some future representation of the actual number 666. It has also been speculated that the mark may be an Imperial Roman seal, or the Emperor's head on Roman coins.
