Ribe, Denmark
Ribe was established in the first decade of the eighth century and first attested in a document dated 854; Ribe is the oldest extant town in Denmark (and in Scandinavia). The town celebrated its 1300th anniversary in 2010
When Ansgar the Archbishop of Hamburg-Bremen, set out on the Mission to bring Christianity to the North, he made a request in about 860, to King Horik II of Denmark, that the first Scandinavian church be built in Ribe. This was not coincidental, since Ribe already at that point was one of the most important trade cities in Scandinavia. However the presence of a bishop, and thus a cathedral, in Ribe can only be confirmed from the year 948. Recent archaeological excavations in Ribe have however led to the discovery of between 2,000 and 3,000 Christian graves. They have been dated to the ninth century indicating that a large Christian community was already living peacefully together with the Vikings at the time. Excavations conducted between 2008 and 2012 have also revealed more details of the original church built by Ansgar. From wikipedia at

#8 - City of Ribe | Driving in Denmark (and walking)
We drive around in the old parts of Ribe. Then we take a walk on the Main Street, around the outside of the cathedral, along the harbor and through the city park.
Ribe is the oldest city in Denmark and the entire Scandinavia, established in the early eighth century sometime between the years 704 and 710.
The first Church in Ribe dates back to 860. The current Ribe Cathedral began construction in 1150.

The Black Sun - Ribe, Denmark
The Black Sun or Sort Sol, as it's called locally, is a phenomena that occurs twice a year around the Wadden Sea region of South Western Jutland in Denmark. After hearing about the Black Sun, where millions of Starlings migrate through the region, pausing to recuperate in the rich marshlands and heavily fielded area, I knew I had to visit.
It occurs twice a year. Once in late fall, and once in mid-spring. I'm hoping to return early next year to catch the spring migration.
The footage in this clip was taken in so-so weather (light rain) on October the 17th in the wetland/fielded area that sits right alongside (essentially inside) the town of Ribe.
The Starlings congregate during the evening. Which means you can see massive flocks of them come in and gather at dusk, or taking flight early in the morning right around sunrise.
Sadly, this, combined with the weather, makes photographing them challenging...but the experience of seeing them in person was fantastic! The sound is also something unreal to behold. You'll hear their chit-chat, but then the whoosh of their wings when they take flight or come in for a landing is...incredible.
I hope this footage is enjoyable/useful and interesting. The folks at Danhostel Ribe were incredibly helpful and have this little guide if you want more info:

Touring the cathedral in Ribe Denmark
It was a little funny that my mom got very excited about a very huge cat we ran into on our trip around denmark. She got more excited about it than anything else she's seen and we've spent days traveling.
We ran into this wild cat in Ribe Denmark while standing next to the cathedral in Ribe Denmark. Ribe Denmark is said to be the oldest town in Denmark. It was my husband and I giving my mom the grand tour of 'Jylland'. She is visiting us from New York where my father lives and my sister and her husband.
Many very old buildings have been preserved for the past 500 or so years. I'm not sure much of the history but it was fun to be there.
We were excited about the cat because we left one at home being babysat by a friend.
