Travel Nevada’s ‘Loneliest Road in America’
Nevada is a road trip waiting to happen. At 109,781 square miles, it is the seventh largest state in the Union, with highways and byways past old mining towns, massive sand dunes and forested mountains. A trip on the Loneliest Road in America (also known as the stretch of U.S. 50 inside Nevada) is a great way to explore the Silver State.
A popular place to start is Reno, where downtown lodging options include the Eldorado Resort Casino, Circus Circus Reno and the Silver Legacy Resort Casino. Head east on Interstate 80, and around the town of Fallon, you will connect with Loneliest Road in America. That was how Life magazine described the road in 1986, adding “we warn all motorists not to drive there unless they’re confident of their survival skills.”
It might be lonely, but it’s also full of beauty and adventure. Gin and vodka fans may want to check out Frey Ranch Distillery in Fallon, while off-road enthusiasts will enjoy Sand Mountain Recreation Area, featuring a 600-foot-tall sand dune. On the eastern end of the state, there is Ward Charcoal Ovens State Historic Park, with six 30-foot-tall beehive-shaped ovens used in the late 19th century, as well as Great Basin National Park, home of the amazing Lehman Caves. There’s also the historical Nevada Northern Railway in Ely, whose history is chronicled at the East Ely Railroad Depot Museum, and the McGill Drugstore Museum, a curious remnant of mid-20th century America.
If you’ve traveled the Loneliest Road as far as Ely, you may want to start heading north to the ranching and mining city of Elko, home of the Western Folklife Center, which puts on the annual National Cowboy Poetry Gathering. You can head back to Reno on Interstate 80, which roughly follows the path pioneers took in the mid-19th century to reach the gold fields of California. Great stops include the California Trail Interpretive Center just west of Elko; the community of Winnemucca, home of the Humboldt Museum; and Lovelock, where you and your sweetie can “lock your love” in Lovers Lock Plaza.

Sarah Winnemucca, Dream Fulfilled
This video is about the process, completion and dedication of the Sarah Winnemucca statue which the State of Nevada gave to the People of the United States for the National Statuary Hall Collection on March 9, 2005.
The video was produced by Gwendolyn Clancy for the Nevada Department of Cultural Affairs.
Benjamin Victor was the sculptor of the Sarah Winnemucca statue.
The Nevada Women's History Project proposed the statue and was instrumental in raising the funds to complete the project. They produced a book about this project, It Can Be Done, which is available at nevadawomen.org in the store.
Marilyn Maxfield took the cover photo.
The Sarah Winnemucca statue is now in the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center.

The Carlin Tunnels: The longest tunnels in Nevada
The Carlin Tunnels are located on Interstate 80 just east of Carlin, Nevada. These tunnels have been around for well over a century. Construction began in 1903 by the Southern Pacific Railroad. The tunnels were meant to be part of the straightening of the first Transcontinental Railroad, since prior to this time, the railroad followed the curved river through the canyon.
The second tunnel was constructed by the Western Pacific Railroad for the Feather River route that connected Oakland, California with Salt Lake City, Utah. Trains still travel through these tunnels to this day.
US Route 40 was originally routed through the Canyon's old railroad grade but with the construction of I-80, two more tunnels were bored through the mountain to accommodate increased traffic. So, all in all, Carlin tunnel encompasses four separate bores.
The tunnels have been in the news a few times since their Construction. In 1908 a rockslide caused the Southern Pacific Tunnel to collapse. In 1939, a city of San Francisco Train derailed nearby and killed 24. It was the result of sabotage.

Days 24,25 in Austin, Nevada-Дни 24, 25 в Остине в Неваде
On day 24 I ran into Austin Nevada a town of approximately 200 people located on a mountain not far from Austin Summit. Thanks to the many folks at the local Chevron station for their support, and words of kindness. I would especially like to thank Jose who set us up with a very decently priced motel, and place to eat for when we reach Eureka (more about this in the clip of the Eureka crossing). Nothing especially exciting happened on day 25 though I did run into Eureka county and finished the day about 27 miles from the city itself. The song is Betrayal and is performed by the band Naive.
Austin Nevada - Part 2 The Way It Was Grand Tour
It all started in 1862 when a pony express ride by the name of W.H. Talcott's horse kicked up a rock at the mouth of pony canyon which turned out to be high grade silver and gold ore. This led to a silver rush by the time the mid 1860s rolled around this town boasted a lumber mill, saloons, brothels, assay office, banks, hospital, hotels, telegraph station, four hundred houses and at least 10k residents. Although floods, fires and elements have erased a large portion of this living ghost town what does remain are some of the finest structures in the wild west such as its frontier churches. Austin held the Lander County seat for many decades it also brought millions of dollars in silver revenue and for a short time hosted the Nevada Central Railroad. This was a town that boasted the good, bad and the ugly everything from epidemics to axe yielding men and frontier justice. Austin not only has one of the oldest saloons/hotels in the state but one of the last Greek revival court houses in the nation and one of the oldest operating Nevadan newspapers that still exist today. Today life has slowed down in Austin to about 200 residents. Many shops thrive on tourism and the sale of there jewelry. Life in this canyon dates back to 3,500 years ago when the Shoshone used Pony Canyon to hunt and sustain themselves. We welcome you to journey with us as I take our friends and viewers to the way it was!

Driving in Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge Nevada State Route 140
The Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge is a 573,504-acre (232,089 ha) national wildlife refuge located on the northern border of the U.S. state of Nevada. A very small part extends northward into Oregon. It is managed by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service as the Nevada component of the Sheldon-Hart Mountain National Wildlife Refuge Complex, which is headquartered in Lakeview, Oregon. The Sheldon Refuge is noted for its population of wild horses.
In 1931, the refuge was established under executive order to carry out three central goals: First, the refuge was to provide a habitat for the antelope (more properly called the pronghorn), an animal whose population was in decline during the early 1900s. Second, conservation efforts were put forth to protect native fish, wildlife and plants. Finally, the refuge was to serve as an inviolate migratory bird sanctuary.[3]
Advocates characterize Sheldon as one of the few intact sagebrush steppe ecosystems in the Great Basin, one that hosts a variety of wildlife endemic to the unique environment.[4] Desert fishes, greater sage-grouse, migratory birds, mule deer and the pygmy rabbit are all residents of the refuge.
The Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge occupies an arid zone of volcanic terrain. Rockhounds search for semiprecious stones such as fire opals. Geothermal hot springs provide some water. The dominant ecosystem plant life consists of drought-tolerant species such as sagebrush, juniper, mountain mahogany, bitterbrush, and aspen. The elevation ranges from 4,100 feet (1,200 m) to 7,200 feet (2,200 m) above sea level.
Nevada mustang featured on state quarter
In this forbidding landscape lives a large population of free-range fauna, with the American mustang, the so-called wild horse of the American West, being the best known. There are also large herds of mule deer, an estimated 3,500 pronghorn, and a small but self-sustaining population of bighorn sheep.
The bighorn are not strictly native to the Sheldon Refuge, having been extirpated there during the frontier era and successfully reintroduced about 1930.[5] The pronghorn antelope played a key role in the history of the Refuge, as approximately 94 percent of the current protected land area was originally set aside as the Charles Sheldon Antelope Range in 1936.[6]
The Refuge is the home of an endemic fish species of limited geographic distribution, the Alvord chub.
Nevada State Route 140 traverses the refuge from east to west and is the only paved road within the refuge. The nearest community of any size is Denio, Nevada, 14 miles from the Refuge's eastern boundary. The nearest divided highway is Interstate 80 in Winnemucca, Nevada, approximately 100 miles to the south.
Proposals to cull some of the alleged excess population of mustang in the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge were drawing public concern as of 2008. The official Fish and Wildlife (USFWS) position, as stated on their Refuge website, was that horses and burros are not native to Sheldon Refuge. They are descended from domestic stock turned loose around the turn of the twentieth century. The population of Sheldon horses are the descendants of horses used by the US Army. Harry Wilson was one of the ranchers that sold horses to the US Cavalry. When the Wilsons owned the Virgin Valley Ranch, they worked with the Army, which provided thoroughbred stallions that were bred with the Wilsons' standardbreds. [9]
State Route 140 (SR 140) is a two-lane state highway in Humboldt County, Nevada. It serves a sparsely populated section of the state, connecting northwestern Nevada to southern Oregon. Most of the highway was originally part of State Route 8A, and was later improved through an effort to provide an all-weather highway linking northern Nevada to the Pacific northwest.
State Route 140 begins at a junction with U.S. Route 95 about 32 miles (51 km) north of Winnemucca in the Quinn River Valley. From this point, the highway heads west towards the sparsely populated regions of northwestern Nevada. SR 140 crosses into the Desert Valley before entering a branch of the Fort McDermitt Indian Reservation. Inside the reservation, the route crosses the Quinn River. Upon exiting the Indian territory, SR 140 curves northwest to parallel the Quinn River for about 10 miles (16 km) as it rounds the northern edge of the Jackson Mountains. As the river turns southeast towards the Black Rock Desert, the highway continues its northwest trajectory through the valley between the Bilk Creek Mountains on the east and the Pine Forest Range to the west. The route crosses over the 4,820-foot (1,470 m) Denio Summit before reaching Denio Junction. State Route 292 intersects the highway here, providing access to Denio, the only town in this region of Nevada.[2]
