VISOKI DECANI MONASTERY KFOR
NATO’s Kosovo Force protects World Heritage site

DECANI, Kosovo - The Visoki Decani Monastery teaches values of peace and tolerance. But at several points in history, its mission has been threatened by opposing ideas and war.
Since the Kosovo War which ended in 1999, and in the ethnic tension that persists, NATO’s Kosovo Force, KFOR, has protected the monastery. Surrounded by Kosovar Albanians, the Serbian Orthodox institution is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
“Love of God means love for all human beings,” said Father Sava Janjic, abbot at the monastery. “This is the driving force of our struggle for peace and a multi-ethnicity, multi-religious society in which we believe people can live together in peace.”
Janjic is Serbo-Croatian, but also cites roots from Germany and Hungary.
KFOR provides a safe and secure environment under its mandate from U.N. Resolution 1244. As part of that mission, it also provides specific protection for the monastery.
“We guard here seven days per week, 24 hours a day,” said Italian Army 1st Lieutenant Andrea Tognati of KFOR’s Multinational Battle Group West. “It’s incredible to see different units, different nations can work together to the same end state.”
Italy, Moldova, Austria and Slovenia all contribute military personnel to MNBG West.
A total of 28 nations contribute to more than 4,000 personnel of KFOR.

The monastic community of the ancient Serbian Monastery High Decani is one of the last spiritual centers of Orthodox faith in Kosovo today.
During recent years of ethnic conflicts and in the midst of destruction and terror - Monastery High Decani has been a steadfast and safe haven for anyone in dire need, regardless of their ethnicity or religious beliefs.
Behind the barbed wires, protected by the KFOR troops and rarely visited by civilian population, this monastic community, nevertheless, lives rich and peaceful life, spreading a good news, the news ever so important for our troubled time: that the true spiritual life and the ultimate diplomacy is diplomacy of the heart. It is given in our ability to forgive, to show compassion, and to love one another.

The Cherubic Hymn at Visoki Dečani Monastery in Kosovo
The Cherubic Hymn chanted during Divine Liturgy at the Visoki Dečani Monastery in Kosovo.
In this video, the chandeliers of the church are swung in a circular motion. This swinging motion symbolically represents the presence of the angels during worship. This is also believed to be symbolic of the Church as Noah's Ark, as it sails through the waves, being a refuge and means of deliverance from the tumultuous seas and storms that surround us in the fallen world.

Also, for the return of the Serbian population which had to leave Kosovo, its very important to have these sites safe and protected, because they will encourage them as a spiritual cells somehow to gather in their homes.

We are offering the full recognition of the rule and the status of the church in Kosovo, fully accepting its name, the Serbian Orthodox church, its own internal organisation; providing legal guarantees, physical protection, lots of benefits like tax exemptions, full access to these sites for pilgrimage and lot of other issues like special zones, protection for certain important, first category monuments and other monuments. And in this aspect, I think we are fully in accordance with what is needed for this community to perform its duties in Kosovo.

STORYLINE:
Ethnic Albanian and Serbian officials met for the fifth time in Vienna on Tuesday to discuss protection and survival of Kosovo's cultural and religious sites which are guarded by NATO peacekeepers, particularly in areas dominated by ethnic Albanians.
The talks will also focus on the legal status of Serbian Orthodox Church's dioceses in the province.
Serbs consider Kosovo the cradle of their civilisation and key Serbian religious and historic sites are located there.
In March 2004, the holy sites were targeted in anti-Serb riots that left more than 30 medieval churches and monasteries damaged or destroyed.
In 2004 UNESCO designated the Visoki Decani monastery - the largest and the best preserved medieval monastery in the province - a world heritage site.
Serbian Orthodox heritage in Kosovo is probably one of the most important parts of Serbian heritage in general and our most important holly sites are practically in Kosov. Father Sava, a Serb monk from Decani monastery told AP Television
Ylber Hysa, who leads the ethnic Albanian delegation pledged a partnership approach.
We are offering the full recognition of the rule and the status of the church in Kosovo, he said.
The fifth Vienna meeting follows four rounds of largely futile discussions on reforming Kosovo's local government and allowing province's Serb minority to run their affairs in areas in where they form a majority.
About 100,000 Serbs remain in Kosovo, living mostly in enclaves protected by international peacekeepers.
