The Vistula Spit is an aeolian sand spit, or peninsular stretch of land, which separates Vistula Lagoon from Gdańsk Bay in the Baltic Sea, with its tip separated from the mainland by the Strait of Baltiysk.The border between Poland and Kaliningrad Oblast, an exclave of Russia, bisects it, politically dividing the spit in half between the two countries.The westernmost point of Russia is located on the Vistula Spit.The Polish part contains a number of tourist resorts, incorporated administratively as the town of Krynica Morska.

Gdańsk Bay or the Bay of Gdańsk or Danzig Bay is a southeastern bay of the Baltic Sea. It is named after the adjacent port city of Gdańsk in Poland and is sometimes referred to as a gulf.
Gdańsk / Gdansk is a Polish city on the Baltic coast, the capital of the Pomeranian Voivodeship, Poland's principal seaport and the center of the country's fourth-largest metropolitan area.
The western part of Gdańsk Bay is formed by the shallow waters of the Bay of Puck. The southeastern part is the Vistula Lagoon, separated by the Vistula Spit and connected to the open sea by the Strait of Baltiysk.
The bay is enclosed by a large curve of the shores of Gdańsk Pomerania in Poland (Cape Rozewie, Hel Peninsula) and the Kaliningrad Oblast of Russia (Sambian Peninsula). The coast of the bay features two very long sandspits, the Hel peninsula and the Vistula Spit. The first one defines the Bay of Puck, the latter one defines the Vistula Lagoon.
The maximum depth is 120 meters, and it has a salinity of 0.7%.
The major ports and coastal cities are Kaliningrad, Gdańsk, Gdynia, Puck, Sopot, Hel, Primorsk, and Baltiysk. The main rivers of Gdańsk Bay are the Pregolya and the Vistula. The bay receives the waters of the Vistula directly via three branches — the Leniwka, the Śmiała Wisła, and the Martwa Wisła — and indirectly via the Vistula Lagoon with two branches, the Nogat and the Szkarpawa.

Привет друзья. В этом обзоре я расскажу вам про Балтийскую Косу, её тайны и легенды. И расскажу, что же скрывает Балтийская Коса.
Общая протяжённость — 65 километров. Российская часть косы в длину составляет около 39 километров. Ширина косы — от 700 метров до 4-5 километров.
Большинство учёных оценивают возраст косы в пять-шесть тысяч лет. формирование дюн началось после возникновения Калининградского) залива.
Вот что говорит о косе всезнающая «Википедия»: это природный феномен, который заключается в противодействии двух природных сил. Морские волны и береговые течения перемещают песок к берегу, а ветер перемещает его на саму косу, образуя дюны.
Самый значимый для жителей этой местности шторм произошёл в 1510 году. Тогда образовался большой пролив, разделяющий Балтийск с косой, который сыграл колоссальную экономическую роль в истории города. Пиллау стал таможенным и торговым центром, через который проходили сотни судов.
Жизнь на территории косы никогда не была лёгкой. Людям ежедневно приходилось бороться с капризами природы и непрерывно двигающимися песками. Так, в 1824 году им была полностью засыпана одна из деревень. Картина, которая открылась жителям, была устрашающей: бывшее деревенское превратилось в рытвину, а из земли торчали исковерканные кресты и погружённые в песок
Тогда было принято решение начать укреплять косу с помощью естественных «держателей» — деревьев. Жители сажали берёзу и ольху от Пиллау до Нойтифа — посёлка на косе. Дюны укрепляли железными штангами, которые несколько портили пейзаж, но были жизненно необходимы. Кроме того, они служили указателями почтовой службе.
Сегодня Вислинская коса на 81% покрыта лесом. На её территории распространены кустарники облепихи, малины, можжевельника, бузины, красной смородины. В лесопарковой зоне косы преобладают хвойные и широколиственные породы деревьев.
Поселения на песке
Самым крупным и известным посёлком на косе являлся Нойтиф. В некоторых источниках есть информация, что несколько посёлков до этого были засыпаны песком. В 1822 году архитектуру Нойтифа составляли три строения и почтовый домик, но позже на этом месте вырос прекрасный приморский городок. Его жители занимались почтовыми пересылками и ловлей рыбы. Накануне Второй мировой в посёлке проживало около 200 человек, сегодня в посёлке Коса, который и является продолжателем истории прусского поселения — 800 человек.
Земледелие здесь не было развито из-за песчаной почвы. Из неё добывали другой продукт — янтарь. Знаменитый географ из города Данциг Филипп Клювер называл Фрише Нерунг «янтарным островом».
Через сто лет после начала бурного развития Нойтифа на этой территории была создана гидроавиационная база. С тех пор коса стала закрытой для посторонних глаз. Такой режим продолжился и после 1945 года, когда советские войска построили здесь военную авиабазу. Нельзя сказать на сто процентов, что закрытая территория сыграла отрицательную роль для Балтийской косы. Возможно, благодаря этому у жителей и гостей Калининградской области есть возможность посещать дикие места.
Сегодня на русской территории косы расположены два посёлка — Коса (бывший Нойтиф) и Рыбачий. Главное, что здесь можно увидеть — руины военных баз, о которых было написано ранее, форты и «останки» грандиозного немецкого аэродрома. С польской стороны косы располагаются три населённых пункта — Рыбацкие Конты, Крыница Морска и Пяски.
Форт на песках Фрише Нерунг был построен пруссами ещё в 1869 году. Памятный камень с датой окончания строительства удивительным образом сохранился и по сей день. Это сооружение в составе крепости Пиллау создавалось из-за оружейной эволюции других европейских стран — гладкоствольные пушки крепости XVII века уже не могли противостоять усовершенствованным орудиям и мощной броне военных кораблей. Стены форта имели форму дуги и прикрывали цитадель Пиллау с северо-запада.
Аэродром на песке
Сам факт строительства такого стратегического сооружения на зыбучей песчаной почве уже удивителен. Однако немцам удалось создать на косе грандиозный аэродром, названный, как и деревня, Нойтифом.
Его строительство началось в 1934 году, и для этого на косе специально возвели бетонный завод. В эксплуатацию военный объект был сдан в 1939 году. Интересно, что электричество на стройку провели лишь в 1938 году, то есть работы велись в крайне сложных условиях.
По слухам, между Вислинской косой и Балтийском есть полузатопленный подземный ход. К слову, время от времени историки действительно находят на территории Балтийска какие-то тоннели, но до сих пор неизвестно, куда они ведут.

The Kuršininkai were considered Latvians until after World War I when Latvia gained independence from the Russian Empire, a consideration based on linguistic arguments. This was the rationale for Latvian claims over the Curonian Spit, Memel, and other territories of East Prussia which would be later dropped.
