Court of the Lions, Alhambra, Granada, Andalusia, Spain, Europe
The Courtyard of the Lions is the main courtyard of the Nasrid dynasty Palace of the Lions, in the heart of the Alhambra, the Moorish citadel formed by a complex of palaces, gardens and forts in Granada, Spain. It was commissioned by the Nasrid sultan Muhammed V of the Emirate of Granada in Al-Andalus. Its construction started in the second period of his reign, between 1362 and 1391 AD. The site is now part of the UNESCO World Heritage List and minted in Spain's 2011 limited edition of 2 € Commemorative Coins. The Palace of the Lions, as well as the rest of the other new rooms built under Muhammad V, like the Mexuar or Cuarto Dorado meant the beginning of a new style, an exuberant mixture of Moorish and Christian influences that has been called Nasrid style. During the period that Muhammad V was ousted as sultane of Granada by his stepbrother, Abu-l Walid Ismail, he discovered in exile a host of new aesthetic influences that were not in the language of his predecessors, not even in his own first contributions to the enrichment of the Nasrid palaces of the Alhambra. In Fes he saw the Almoravid mosque of Qarawiyyin, built by Andalusian architects. The splendor of the decorations, specially the profuse use of the muqarnas that had once decorated the palaces and mosques of Al-Ándalus, stunned the ex-sultan, as did the ruins of the Roman city of Volubilis, where he could directly examine the classical orders, Roman ornamentation and, above all, the disposition of the Roman 'impluvium'; the Roman ruins at Volubilis were particularly well preserved since they had been abandoned for a period of time in the Middle Ages and later constructively re-used as a necropolis. Muhammad became an ally of his personal friend, the Christian king Pedro I of Castile, who helped him to regain the throne and defeat the usurpers. Meanwhile, he was also astonished with the construction of the palace of Pedro I, the Alcázar of Seville, built in Mudéjar style by architects from Toledo, Seville and Granada. The influence of this Mudéjar style of King Pedro in the future Palace of the Lions was going to be decisive, especially the structure and disposition of the Qubba rooms along two axis of the 'Patio de las Doncellas' (Courtyard of the Maidens). The Courtyard of the Lions is an oblong courtyard, 35 m in length and 20 m in width, surrounded by a low gallery supported on 124 white marble columns. A pavilion projects into the courtyard at each extremity, with filigree walls and light domed roof, elaborately ornamented. The square is paved with coloured tiles, and the colonnade with white marble; while the walls are covered 1.5 m up from the ground with blue and yellow tiles, with a border above and below enamelled blue and gold. The columns supporting the roof and gallery are irregularly placed, with a view to artistic effect; and the general form of the piers, arches and pillars is most graceful. At present, the fountain is under restoration in an effort to preserve its integrity. The slender column forest have been said to represent the palm trees of an oasis in the desert, deeply related with Paradise in the Nasrid imagination. In the poem of Ibn Zamrak on the basin of the fountain, a further meaning is stated clearly: The fountain is the Sultan, which smothers with his graces all his subjects and lands, as the water wets the gardens. Nowadays the flower garden has been substituted by a dry garden of pebbles, in order not to affect the foundation of the palace with the watering. In Nasrid times, the floor of the quartered planting beds was slightly lower than the general level, and the visual effect was like a tapestry of flowers, as the top of the plants were cut to the same level of the courtyard, and these were carefully chosen to cover a host of color nuances. Some research suggests that the 11th century lions of the Lion Fountain come from the house of the Jewish vizier Yusuf Ibn Nagrela (1066). It is not known if they were made before his death, and at the time, he was accused of wanting to build a much bigger palace than the king's. They are large for sculptures of animals in Islamic art, but as in other sites of al Andaluz such as the earlier Medina Azahara near Cordoba, that there are multiple animals and that they are shown in a subordinate position, as carrying the bowl of the fountain, helps to dispel any possibility of an idolatrous intention, which was the concern of Muslim clergy. The Pisa Griffin is even larger. An almost exact description of the original fountain is still kept, written by the poet Ibn Gabirol (11th century): they represent the 12 tribes of Israel, two of them have a triangle on the forehead, indicating the two chosen tribes: Judá and Leví. The Lions have recently been removed from the fountain for restoration, but will soon be back where they belong.

Andalusia - The Alcazar of Seville - Spain
The Alcázar of Seville was constructed during the 12th century Almohad reign, but was rebuilt in 1364 for the Christian ruler Pedro I (The Cruel). All that remains of the Almohad palace is a section of wall and a cross-axially-planned garden, but the rebuilt palace's plan, gardens, and decorative programme place it squarely within the tradition of Islamic palaces on the Iberian Peninsula.
The palace is arranged in blocks on three sides around a rectangular court, entered through the remains of an Almohad wall with arched openings. The block opposite the entrance has a façade ornamented with blind interlacing polylobed arcades. The entrance axis extends through two rectangular halls, across the main rectangular courtyard (the Patio de las Doncellas) and through the entrance to the rectangular hall at the opposite end of the courtyard. The Patio de las Doncellas is surrounded by luxurious rectangular reception halls ornamented with carved wood doors, ceilings, and polychrome glazed tile dados - all of which visually connect the Alcázar to the contemporary Nasrid palaces of the Alhambra. Paved with white marble, the Patio de las Doncellas has a large central fountain and is surrounded by an arcade ornamented with elaborately carved stucco. Arabic inscriptions referring to Pedro I as sultan are found throughout the courtyard and palace, carved in stucco and in wood.
The Patio de las Muñecas (Court of the Dolls) is a smaller, though richly ornamented, interior courtyard located southeast of the Patio de las Doncellas, but still within the palace block north of the entrance court.
The block on the west side of the entrance courtyard contains the square, vaulted Hall of Justice. The interior of the Hall opens onto the Patio del Yesso (Court of Stucco), whose name refers to the court's decoration in carved stucco. The two spaces are connected by water - a shallow fountain basin in the Hall's pavement flows into the pool of the Patio del Yesso along a shallow channel, much like the pavilion water features in the Alhambra's Court of the Lions.
Though the Islamicizing appearance of the Alcázar is traditionally attributed to the work of Muslim craftsmen sent from Granada, it is not clear that the visual language created by the Nasrids at the Alhambra was only executed by Muslim craftsmen. The existence of churches, monasteries, and synagogues on the Iberian Peninsula that utilise this visual language suggests that such forms were widely appropriated by non-Muslim patrons and craftsmen who could work in the popular idiom.

SI PUDIERA
Si pudiera volver sobre mis pasos,
buscaría la huella de los tuyos
para unirme a tus sueños encantados
al abrazo gentil de tu refugio.
Si pudiera torcer el cruel destino,
que arrancó tu presencia para siempre,
tendría rosas, no espinas, mi camino
y fulgores de dicha mi presente.
Pero todo es quimera, tú te fuiste,
Dios me puso una prueba nuevamente,
no me dio la ocasión de despedirte,
tu recuerdo me sigue eternamente.

SOFiSTiK-Grashopper suspension bridge modeling
This short video shows my last project. I used new SOFiSTIK-Grasshopper components to create whole geometry, dead and traffic loads. Thanks to this parametric model I can start work with only one general drawing of structure and adjust all dimensions what I want when I get detail drawings. This FEM model was a basis to perform nonlinear analysis of deconstruction of suspension bridge using CSM module.

REF: SA741. 4 bed reformed country home for sale in Lucar, Almeria, Andalucia, Spain
This fully reformed (internally) cortijo on the outskirts of Lucar offers everything you could possibly want from rural country living in Spain, Great views, nice neighbours and a magnificent rural setting with plenty of land to call your own. The cortijo retains most of its original features which the owner went to great expense and trouble to keep. The property also has independent (state of the art, at a cost of 45,000€) energy sources with both a wind turbine and solar power housed in a structure around 170 meters from the main house. The property has generous water rights. There is a little outside rendering to be finished and the swimming pool has not yet been completed although all the parts are there, including the pump etc. The owners also planned to erect a pergola from the tarmac road which they could not begin but, again, everything is there for a buyer wishing to fulfil their vision for the property. Completion of the remaining work would not exceed €8,000 Euros. For personal reasons the current owners have with regret put their dream home on the market.
There are two entrances to the property. One is a pair of antique, iron-bound doors giving onto the main hall. The other entrance is at the east end of the property, where the security door is located. Entering the house through the east entrance in the wonderful outer courtyard with table and chairs for that al-fresco dining, you must first pass a state of the art security system with cameras that can be accessed in real time via the internet. This covered space - the inner courtyard - retains all its character and is very light. There is a wine cellar/room and a utility room/kitchen in this area before you enter the main house properly. A second wooden external door provides direct access to the almond orchard. Entering the main house, from the inner courtyard brings you to a study with a staircase leading to the master bedroom with en-suite. This section is independent of the rest of the house. Downstairs off the study there is another bathroom. The study door leads to an impressive dining room with original wooden beams -- the wood beams are a theme within all the rooms. Exiting this dining room you come to another big room/hallway and the centre of the house. Off this room there is a spectacular library, the main kitchen and a sitting room. A staircase leads up to three bedrooms, a family bathroom and another lounge/family room and outside terrace with wonderful country views. The library was purposely built and quality wood is used throughout this room. The downstairs lounge is spacious, light with lovely chandeliers and comes with a fire place which has rear doors that can be opened to warm the hallway. The kitchen is traditional as you would expect and its detailed features include antique tiles incorporated on the walls.
Upstairs, the three bedrooms are all a generous size, light, spacious and oozing with character and in keeping with the rest of the house. The floor tiles of the bedrooms and bathroom were original features of the house that have been preserved and recycled. The attention to detail is breathtaking. The lounge here is more of a relaxing leisure room and the wooden shelves and cabinets were made to measure and are of excellent quality. The terrace is reached from this room and the views from it are breath-taking. The whole house oozes quality and attention to detail. Very little effort would complete the outside space and make this property a truly splendid country home with everything you could possible require to enjoy your surroundings.
The property has many features including two embalses (reservoirs), central heating, radio shower, microwave broadband, satellite TV, outside traditional oven, a well and so much more. Full details can be offered on application.
