Vitra House Weil am Rhein Germany
Vitra House at the Vitra Campus - Weil am Rhein, Germany
Herzog & de Meuron, 2010. As the purpose of the VitraHaus is to display home furnishings, the architects of the VitraHaus, Herzog & de Meuron, took up the idea of the archetypal house, as the proportions and dimensions of the rooms bring to mind residential space that is familiar to us - the architects use the term domestic scale. The individual houses which have the general characteristics of a showroom are with few exceptions glazed at the gable ends only. Superimposed in five storeys and overhanging in some cases by up to 15 metres, the twelve houses which each intersect the gables of the storey below create an almost chaotic whole.
From 1955 to 1981, the Vitra site in Weil am Rhein saw the successive addition of various manufacturing and warehouse structures that yielded a somewhat coincidental and improvised architectural composite. In 1981, most of these buildings were destroyed by a major fire. Although insurance funds only covered a six-month interruption in production, the company did not wish to settle for anonymous standardized industrial structures or a solution with temporary facilities. The architecture was to be functional and offer a pleasant work environment while also fulfilling aesthetic requirements. Assigned to the architect Nicholas Grimshaw, this first project was followed by further buildings over the years, resulting in a heterogeneous ensemble of contemporary architecture: the Vitra Campus.
Vitra stands for an architectural concept that unites buildings by some of the most influential architects in the world at the Vitra Headquarters in Birsfelden (Switzerland) by Frank Gehri and on the Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein (Germany). We have here buildings of Jean Prouvé, Buckminster Fuller, Frank Gehri, Tadao Ando, Alvaro Siza, Zaha Hadid, Sanaa and Herzog and De Meuron

VitraHaus by architects Herzog & de Meuron
| The VitraHaus is the newest addition to the architecture park that the furniture company Vitra has realized during the last decades on their company site. The new building is no monolithic block. Instead, it looks like ordinary residential houses with saddle roof that have been stacked on top of each other randomly. This video was shot during the press preview and shows the exterior as well as the interior of the new VitraHaus and an excerpt of Jacques Herzog discussing the VitraHaus concept. Dreiländerbrücke (Weil am Rhein - Huning)
Two main roads, the « Hauptstrasse » in Weil am Rhein, Germany, and the « Rue de France » in Hunningue, France, are situated on the same axis. To emphasize this highly symbolic and visual connection between the two countries, the footbridge is put along the axis and not into it for the view not to be disturbed. This visual connection is enhanced by the physical one, as the design of the bridge is a response to the situation. The technical challenge is evident.
A double hexagonal tubular steel arch is the main support element of the bridge. Towards the south, another single arch is leant against it. The inclination of this arch widens the visual scope.
The details of the design such as the supports close to the river banks, the widening of the slowly rising ramps, as well as the banisters consisting of cable-suspended steel-nets leave the sight of the river undisturbed and make the bridge blend into the landscape.

Vitra Campus Tour - Weil am Rhein
The architecture park at the Campus in Weil am Rhein is as characteristic of Vitra as the home and office furniture that it produces. In 1981, after a major fire destroyed most of the factory buildings built in the 1950s, this site was developed into a heterogeneous ensemble of contemporary architecture. The legendary architect Philip Johnson once wrote: “Not since the Weissenhofsiedlung in Stuttgart in 1927 has there been a gathering in a single place of a group of buildings designed by the most distinguished architects in the Western world.” In developing the Campus, the architects involved sought to create buildings that harmonised both with the surrounding residential areas and with the natural landscape of the border triangle (Switzerland, Germany and France). And, indeed, what came about was a collection of purpose-built constructions, the incredible density and quality of which have made the Vitra Campus an attraction for fans of architecture from all over the world.
