Just 20 kilometres away from Trivandrum city is an ancient lighthouse known as Vizhinjam lighthouse, which was constructed in the year 1925. Standing tall at 57 meters above sea level,
Vizhinjam lighthouse is situated near Kovalam beach in Kerala. It started functioning on 30 June 1972. Vizhinjam was a busy seaport in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Before the current light was installed, there were no lighthouses at this location. A day mark beacon (flag mast) must have been there in 18th century. After 19th century, this port was in a neglected state. A lighted beacon was constructed in 1925 at nearby Kolachal. Subsequently a day mark beacon was provided at Vilinjam during 1960.
The tower is cylindrical with a height of 36 meters. The paint markings are red and white bands. The lighthouse is equipped with metal halide lamps and direct drive mechanism.The light source was modified on 30 April 2003.

There is no other place in the city from where one can capture stunning view of the Arabian Sea.Just 10 kilometres away from Trivandrum city is an ancient lighthouse known as Vizhinjam lighthouse, which was constructed in the year 1925. Standing tall at 57 meters above sea level, this 36-meter high tower is open for just 3 hours every day, for public viewing.
Opening Closing Time
3 pm to 6 pm
3 pm to 6 pm Note that the lighthouse lamp is lighted at 5:30 pm and is put off at 6am on the next day.
Entrance Fee
INR 20 and 5 Rs additional for carrying mobile
Close to the lighthouse is Vizhinjam beach which is best for an evening stroll and cycling.

Kovalam beach is clean as compared to other beaches I have visited in Kerala. Kovalam is a small coastal town in the southern Indian state of Kerala, south of Thiruvananthapuram. At the southern end of Lighthouse Beach is a striped lighthouse with a viewing platform. One should take precautions before entering into the water as this beach is deep and dangerous for those who never been to a beach in South India.

Vizhinjam Light House is situated very close to Light House beach and the adjoining Kovalam Beach. It has a Panaromic view of the sea and the light house beach and VIzhinjam beach on other side. THe light house has got a lift but it starts from first floor and also ends one floor before the main deck. To reach the main deck there is a ladder. So its easy for senior citizens too. THere is a nominal entry fee and parking charges . During my visit to Vizhinjam Lighthouse I tried the sea ride at Kovalam Beach and had stayed at Club Mahindra Poovar the links are as below:-

Lighthouse Beach, a long stretch of sand, is located along the Malabar Coast. Out of the three beaches of Kovalam, this beach is the largest. At the southern end of this beach, stands a 30 metre high lighthouse.
