Esztergom (Hungary) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Esztergom in Hungary.
Esztergom is a city located west of the Hungarian capital of Budapest on the Slovakian border where, situated on a huge rock, there is a Basilica and castle. This, ‘Hungarian Rome’, lives completely in the shadow of the Catholic Church as the centre of Hungary and residence of the country’s Primas, an area that has been inhabited since the Prehistoric Stone Age. On April 23, 1822, the foundation stone of the Basilica was added to earlier church buildings after Vienna’s Imperial Court helped return the city’s archbishops back to power. At its consecration on August 31, 1856, Franz Liszt performed a specially-composed festive mass in the presence of Emperor Franz Joseph. Everything is based upon its dimensions: a hundred and seven metres to the dome, a hundred and eighteen feet long and forty eight feet wide. It can accommodate a congregation of eight thousand and even today each detail of this monumental building radiates both awe and pomp. The former ecclesiastical and secular centre of Stephan’s Empire has indeed survived the ravages of time..

Hungary's Largest Church-Esztergom Basilica and Treasury (With Facts/Figures)
The Esztergom Basilica in Esztergom, Hungary is the largest church in Hungary and the 18th largest church in the world. The beautiful interior contains the largest painting in the world painted on a single canvas. The Treasury contains vestments and church plates in gold and silver, studded with jewels. Filming was prohibited in the Treasury but I did it until I got caught.

Esztergom, the seat of the Hungarian Catholic Church, is one of the oldest towns in Hungary. The Basilica of Esztergom, a masterpiece of Classicism, is the third largest church in Europe. Established around 972 AD, Esztergom has always played an important role in Hungary's history. It was the birth and coronation place of the first Hungarian king, St. Stephen, as well as the capital of Hungary until the 13th century. After the Mongolian invasion, King Bela IV moved the Royal Seat to Visegrád and later to Buda, giving his palace to the archbishop and making Esztergom a religious center. The majority of the historic sites and the city's architectural heritage are of a religious nature, like the Primate's Palace, the Franciscan monastery, and several chapels and churches. Remains of the former royal palace, Turkish, Classicist and Baroque buildings, as well as the Basilica, attract many visitors. One of the newest additions to Esztergom is the Mária Valéria Bridge, which connects the city with Slovakia. Esztergom is often nicknamed as the 'City of St. Stephen' and the 'Hungarian Rome. The seat of the Catholic Church in Hungary was built on the site of the first cathedral in the country, where the first Hungarian King St. Stephen was crowned in 1000 AD. Rebuilt during the 1800s in Neo-Classicist style, this is the largest church in Hungary. Pope John Paul II visited the Basilica during his trip to Hungary in 1991. The reconstructed remains of the former royal palace founded by Prince Géza, father of King St. Stephen, are in the neighborhood of the Basilica. Today, the building is home to a museum.

Noisiest Church in Europe. Sopron, Hungary
This has my vote as the noisiest church in Europe, possibly anywhere. You can be aurally assaulted on Saturdays and Sundays, and randomly throughout the week. Three other churches in the neighborhood aren't nearly as bad and are more respectful of their neighbors. If you find a noisier church, please post and I will change the title.

Pécs is the fifth largest city of Hungary, located on the slopes of the Mecsek mountains in the south-west of the country, close to its border with Croatia. It is the administrative and economical centre of Baranya county. Pécs is also the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Pécs. The city Sopianae was founded by Romans at the beginning of the 2nd century, in an area peopled by Celts and Pannoni tribes. By the 4th century it became the capital of Valeria province and a significant early Christian center. The early Christian necropolis is from this era which became an UNESCO World Heritage Site in December 2000.
The name Vukovar means the town on the river Vuka ('Vuko' from the river Vuka, and 'vár' from the Hungarian word for 'castle'). The name of the river Vuka itself originates from the Slavic word 'vuk', meaning 'wolf'. In other languages, the city in German is known as Wukowar, in Hungarian as Vukovár or Valkóvár, in Serbian as Вуковар and in Turkish as Vukovar.
