Vladimir Dimitrov — Maystora (Bulgarian: Владимир Димитров — Майстора) (1 February 1882 – 29 September 1960), was a Bulgarian painter, draughtsman and teacher. He is considered one of the most talented 20th century Bulgarian painters and probably the most remarkable stylist in Bulgarian painting in the post-Russo-Turkish War era. His portraits and compositions have expressive and vivid color, idealistic quality of the image, profound symbolic strength and originality. The main topic which he explores is the relation between Man and Nature. Although he does not consider himself religious, he regards Nature as governed by a supreme spirit; he shares that the main purpose of his paintings is to elevate man and humanity, to bring it closer to harmony, represented by this omnipresent spirit.
Vladimir Dimitrov was born in Frolosh, near Kyustendil and started his career as a clerk. In 1903 he enrolled in the School of Drawing in Sofia where he had been called the Master (Maystora) for the first time. In 1922 he met the American John Crane in Rome and sold him much of his work for the next few years. In the period before and after the First World War he travelled extensively, visited Russia, Italy, France, Germany and the USA. After that he spent almost all of his life in the village of Shishkovtzi.
Vladimir Dimitrov is famous not solely because of his paintings but also because of his lifestyle. His family was poor but even after he became famous, he was trying to give away all of his possessions and money, living in poverty and asceticism, wearing old clothes, never shaving and eating only vegetarian food. This is the reason why even while alive, many people believed that he was a saint and showed great affection for him.
Vladimir Dimitrov was an outstanding artist who included bright colors within his art and today we consider his artwork a fauvist type rather than an expressionist set. He uses as well a wide range of post-impressionist techniques, but his works always keep a strong bound with reality and he tries to simplify many of the figures and compositions to make them accessible for a wider public. The main expressive strength does not come from the clarity of the images but from the colors. More than 700 of his oil paintings are exhibited in the Vladimir Dimitrov Art Gallery in Kyustendil.
Maystora Peak on Greenwich Island in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica is named for the painter.

Националният дарителски фонд „13 века България“ представя първата мултимедийна изложба, посветена на Владимир Димитров–Майстора – „Светлина и Дух“
Проектът е иновативен за България и по същество е изложба от съвършено нов тип, преобръщаща представите ни за експониране на художествени творби в зала. Емблематични, но така също и по-малко познати творби на Майстора – рисунки, платна, скици, графики, автопортрети, се представят с помощта на високотехнологичен софтуер и „оживяват” в огромни поли-екрани пред зрителя в залата, завъртат се в една визуална феерия със собствена хореография, в симфония от цвят, звук и светлина. Видеоартът прави възможно хипердетайлното вглеждане в картините, изследва акценти от техниката и уникалното използване на цвета от художника, наричан още „иконографът на българското лице”.

Bulgarian Artists - Stoyan Venev / Стоян Венев (1904-1989)
Stoyan Venev was born in 1904 in the village of Skrinyano, Kyustendil Municipality. He graduated from high school in Kyustendil (1928) as during his school years he started painting cartoons for various newspapers and magazines - Red laugh, Zvanar, Echo and others. These cartoons have been signed with the pseudonym Пролетарче (Little Proletarian).
He graduated with painting from the Academy of Arts in Sofia under Prof. B. Mitov, Prof. Stefan Ivanov and Prof. Dimitar Gyudzhenov (1931). Already in his early creative years he became widely popular. His works are mainly in painting, but he also draws graphics and cartoons.
In the 1930s he was an illustrator of the newspaper Vesela druzhina.
The first exhibitions in which he took part were in the 1930s. In these exhibitions he participated together with the sculptor Ivan Funev. He has been held accountable for his anti-fascist ideas in several of his works. The main themes in Stoyan Venev's paintings are retrieved from the Bulgarian folklore.
After September 9, 1944, he published many of his cartoons in the newspapers Starshel, Workers' Delo and others. His paintings also have great successes.
He organized solo exhibitions in Sofia (1942), Moscow (1965), GDR (1969), West Berlin (1971) and others. He participated in joint art exhibitions in the USSR, Czechoslovakia, China, Berlin, Budapest, Leipzig, London, Paris, Vienna, Athens, Bucharest, New York, etc. Jubilee exhibitions were presented in Sofia (1954, 1964 and 1974) and Kyustendil (1984).
Stoyan Vennev's works are at the National Gallery of Art, the Art Gallery, the Dresden Gallery, the Pushkin Museum in Moscow, galleries in London, Paris, Chisinau, St. Petersburg and many private collections. In 1950 and 1953 he was awarded the Dimitrov Prize and in 1965 he became a Honorary Citizen of Kyustendil. He died on March 20, 1989.
