Scenes from Vogel State Park in Blairsville, Georgia
While on a Saturday day hike on Bear Hair Trail in Vogel State Park I decided to take a few still images and video of some of the different things I saw; one of those being a small creek that cascaded through the mountains.

If you're planning a trip to the North Georgia Mountains and are looking for a spot to visit, you should look into Vogel State Park. It's located about 2 and 1/2 hours north of Atlanta and is within 40 minutes of Unicoi State Park.
On this trip we weren't able to camp at Vogel because they were booked out, but we did get up there to spend a day hiking on a few of their trails.
In this video we hike through Vogel State Park, learning a bit as we go, while also checking out a couple of their trails. If you've been to Vogel or are planning a trip, let us know what your thoughts are. We know for sure we loved it.

North Georgia Waterfalls
#ilovervlife #georgiawaterfalls #vogelstatepark We were a few miles south of Blairsville, GA and took the afternoon to see some of the beautiful waterfalls in the area. All along Highway 19, we started at Vogel State Park, next to Helton Creek Falls and finished the day at DeSoto Falls. All are located along a 5 mile drive with easy access to each. We also stopped at a few spots along the way. A favorite is the Walasi-Yi Center and Mountain Store found at the top of Neel Gap located along the Appalachian Trail.

Lake Nottely Blairsville Georgia
Introduction video of Lake Nottely.
Lake Nottely (also called Nottely Reservoir) is one of many reservoirs of the Tennessee Valley Authority. It is located entirely in Union County, Georgia in the United States. Formed in 1942 by the damming of the Nottely River, Nottely Reservoir extends 20 miles (30 km) upstream to the town of Blairsville.
Construction of Nottely Dam began in 1941 and was completed in 1942. The dam is 184 feet (56 m) high and stretches 2,300 feet (701 m) across the Nottely River. Lake Nottely has a flood-storage capacity of 61,588 acre feet (75,968,000 m3). Its primary purpose was for flood control in the Tennessee River watershed, but in the 1950s a single 15 megawatt generator was installed for power generation.
Approximately 70% of the shoreline is under the jurisdiction of the United States Forest Service and undeveloped. In recent years, many new homes and properties have contributed to Lake Nottely's growing importance for recreation. Its proximity to Atlanta (2 hours) is resulting in increased use of this reservoir.

Civilian Conservation Corps, Company 1333, Camp S-63, Poe Valley vid 1
The Foreman's Boys video 1
Employment prospects for many were bleak at the height of the Great Depression. For unmarried recent high school graduates, the prospect of getting a job was mostly non-existent. President Rosevelt’s New Deal plan included the Civilian Conservation Corps, a program specifically targeted to provide employment for those whose job prospects were non-existent. This seventeen to twenty-five-year-old age group would seize upon this opportunity for full-time employment, enroll for a six-month hitch and venture into the unknown.
New enrollees processed into the program at regional induction centers after receiving a medical exam, issued clothing and gear, given a general idea of the work projects they would engage. They were then transported to a work camp, their new home for the next six months. The work to be performed was focused on regeneration of America’s severely depleted forests and lands. For many decades harvesting of timber, depletion of natural resources, and taking from the lands had been performed with little or no regard for conservation.
The work projects included tree planting, eradication of destructive vegetation, construction of roads and bridges, fire management, soil management, and the development of parks and recreational areas. This book tells the story about CCC Company 1333, Camp S-63, Poe Valley situated in the rugged mountains of central Pennsylvania. From the first day, the camp was activated through the last day of operation, the book is filled with accounts of camp development, work projects, construction of the dam creating Poe Valley lake, and numerous stories told by veterans, camp administrators, and military commanders. Included are hundreds of names of rostered enrollees. Anyone interested in learning what life was like in a CCC camp during and after work hours, this book will provide insight into camp operations and activities. For those researching family history, the roster of names just may include the one you have been looking for.
