Cross Channel Adventure to: Lezadrieux and the surrounding villages of Paimpol and Pontrieux
In this Haven Knox-Johnston Cross Channel Adventure, Cecienne explores the Riviere de Trieux, a river that runs deep into the Brittany countryside and provides a delightful cruising ground for yachtsman and motorboat owners alike. The channel is easy to navigate past the picturesque towns and villages that line the riverbanks.
About 3 miles inland from the estuary lies the town of Lezadrieux where there is a friendly marina with moorings for several hundred pleasure boats and with great facilities. Lezadrieux itself is home to a wonderful variety of shops, including delicious patisseries as well as bars and restaurants where you can enjoy the local cuisine. The village hosts a music festival in late May and several regattas also depart from the port. An option to explore further up river whilst leaving your boat in the marina, is a diesel train that leaves from the town of Paimpol several times a day and follows a single track along the river to the village of Pontrieux.
Pontrieux is a must for its setting and pretty traditional French style buildings and cobbled streets. Mooring is also available on the river, if you come by boat, right in the town where John recommends anchoring for a couple of days to explore and enjoy the tranquility of rural French life. John and team then also stop off at the Ile de Brehat, one of Brittany’s loveliest islands. It’s traffic free, and a great place to explore on foot or by bike….or just unwind!
Next adventure…Roscoff and Morlaix

The four piece Croche Dedans are making the long voyage from Nantes, France, to travel our fair coastline for 12 shows from Leigh to Akaroa. They channel sea shanties from the shores of Brittany and beyond with a vigour and skill rarely seen in the oceanic folk scene.
New Zealand's Most 'Sea Worthy' Shanty Group™, the Wellington Sea Shanty Society, have been belting out traditional sea songs from New Zealand for nigh on two years. Sailors and landlubbers from across the country have been battered by the rousing chorus of this two-man tempest of pure shanty. The W.S.S.S believe that 'a shanty shared is a shanty savoured', so they pass out shanty song sheets to one and all so people can sing along.
The W.S.S.S comprise Vorn Dont le Père Etait Marin, from the indie pop band Vorn (vorn.co.nz), and Lake Davineer, from the electro pop band Urbantramper (urbantramper.com). Vorn is on squeeze box duties, while Lake strums the git-fiddle. Rousing harmonies and raucous foot-stomping abound!

SUMMARY
=======
Brittany (; French: Bretagne [bʁətaɲ] ( listen); Breton: Breizh, pronounced [bʁɛjs] or [bʁɛχ]; Gallo: Bertaèyn, pronounced [bəʁtaɛɲ]) is a cultural region in the northwest of France, covering the western part of what was known as Armorica during the period of Roman occupation. It became an independent kingdom and then a duchy before being united with the Kingdom of France in 1532 as a province governed as if it were a separate nation under the crown.
Brittany has also been referred to as Less, Lesser or Little Britain (as opposed to Great Britain, with which it shares an etymology). It is bordered by the English Channel to the north, the Celtic Sea and the Atlantic Ocean to the west, and the Bay of Biscay to the south. Its land area is 34,023 km² (13,136 sq mi).
Brittany is the site of some of the world's oldest standing architecture, home to the Barnenez, the Tumulus Saint-Michel and others, which date to the early 5th millennium BC. Today, the historical province of Brittany is split among five French departments: Finistère in the west, Côtes-d'Armor in the north, Ille-et-Vilaine in the north east, Loire-Atlantique in the south east and Morbihan in the south on the Bay of Biscay. Since reorganisation in 1956, the modern administrative region of Brittany comprises only four of the five Breton departments, or 80% of historical Brittany. The remaining area of old Brittany, the Loire-Atlantique department around Nantes, now forms part of the Pays de la Loire region.
At the 2010 census, the population of historic Brittany was estimated to be 4,475,295. Of these, 71% lived in the region of Brittany, while 29% lived in the Loire-Atlantique department. In 2012, the largest metropolitan areas were Nantes (897,713 inhabitants), Rennes (690,467 inhabitants), and Brest (314,844 inhabitants). Brittany is the traditional homeland of the Breton people and is recognised by the Celtic League as one of the six Celtic nations, retaining a distinct cultural identity that reflects its history. A nationalist movement seeks greater autonomy within the French Republic.
