Volant or Volant
With in the next two years a local landmark in Lawrence County will be 200 years old. The Volant Mill celebrates it's bicentennial in 2012. The Mill itself is actually older than the town's name. WCN24/7 reporter Ashley Bishop reveals Volant's history and correct pronunciation.
Wilkin & Son General Store in Volant, PA owned by Warren Wilkin Sr (1958)
Warren Wilkin Sr. was the grandson of Jonathan Harlan Wilkin who, along with his wife Eleanor Drake, founded the Wilkin & Son General Store in Volant in 1872. J.H. Wilkin was the son of Sarah Harlan (1798-1874) whose father founded Harlansburg in 1800, and William Wilkin (1787-1856), originally a miller in Chester County, PA, who moved to New Castle along with his brother John, mother and three sisters in 1810. Jonathan was presumably born in Harlansburg and had previously run a milling business in Leesburg, PA. The general store was closed in the late 1950's and was purchased by the Volant Volunteer Fire Company in 1961.
The three children seen entering and exiting the Wilkin & Son General Store are Warren Sr.'s grandchildren by his eldest son Warren: Claudia 12 (in the red shorts), Jay 6 (in the jeans and striped shirt) & Candy 4 ( in the light blue overalls).
Jonathan & Eleanor Nellie Wilkin built and lived in the house immediately NW of the store. Around 1910 they also built what later became the Post Office.
The Volant Mill can be seen across the street from the store. Jonathan's son V.O., who later ran the store, married Elizabeth Jordan, whose sister Matilda Jane Jordan married David D. Simison, who ran the mill.
At the end of the film is a view, panning from left to right, of the rear of the store. The WWII war memorial is immediately SE of the store in the center of the parking lot. Warren's son Warren Jr. is listed there as a participant in the D Day landing. The mill can be seen across the street from the memorial, and the ball field behind the store.

The History of the Wilkin & Son General Store (1872 to 1961) Volant, PA
The dates used for Jonathan and Eleanor's early life and the establishment of the general store in Volant in 1872 come from page 79 in the History of Lawrence County written in 1887 compiled by Wick W. Wood working for the News Company, Ltd. It states, They (Jonathan & Eleanor Wilkin) remained there (Springfield Falls, PA) until 1872, when they came to Volant and opened a store, buying the store room they are now located in.
It should be noted that the History of Lawrence County PA 1770-1877 (written in 1877) by S.W. & P.A. Durrant states that John & William Graham had a store in Volant which was built soon after the town was laid out in 1872, and that it was the first building erected in the new town. And that Jonathan Wilkin also has a store. So by this account it would still be possible for both stores to have been built in 1872.
However, later on page 82 of the Wick W. Wood history, it states that the Graham Brothers store was established in 1875. So at this point it is unclear if the date for the J Wilken & Son store was 1872 or sometime between 1875-1877. The original Graham's store burned down around 1900. The store which they built to replace it later housed the First Seneca Bank in the 1970's.
Wick W. Wood further states that the cousin of Eleanor Drake Wilkin, John Drake (1846-1915), worked in the Graham Brothers General Store from the beginning. In 1876 John Drake married Sarah Graham and so became William Graham's brother-in-law. In 1882 John Drake bought into the business and became a partner.
The other early buildings that Durrant mentions as present in 1877 are: the grist mill built in 1812 and owned by J.P. Locke (who originally laid out the town on 100 acres in 1872), the New Castle & Franklin Railroad finished in 1873, the Methodist-Episcopal Church built in 1875, two shoe shops owed by George Carr & Frank Herman, a blacksmith shop owned by Isaac Kirk and two harness shops owned by John Potter & Archibald Carr.
Durrant noted that a covered bridge was to be erected later that year of 1877, though other sources say it was already built in 1875.
The Volant Post Office was established about 1840-45 in a nearby mill on the Neshannock and William Hoover was appointed the first postmaster in 1858. In 1874 the office was moved to the new town laid out in 1872 by Mr. Locke and it is thought the name of the town was changed from Lockville to Volant at that time. In 1875 or 1876 William Graham was appointed the first postmaster at this location. The building which housed the post office as of the 1960's was built by Jonathan & Eleanor Wilkin around 1910 and was later owned by their daughter Hettie Johnson.
Note: the grist mill was bought by David D. Simison's father in 1879. And D.D. Simison took over the mills operation in 1886. D. D. Simison's wife was Matilda Jane Jordan. Her sister Elizabeth Catherine Jordan married Valencia Osceola Wilkin, Jonathan Wilkin's son, who was the Son of the J Wilkin & Son General Store. The mill and the store were directly across the street from each other.
Frank Moorhead who moved to Volant in 1887 and drove Jonathan Wilkin's butter and egg wagon through the country, later built his own little store and then a larger one in 1899. He studied and became a druggist and also ran a soda fountain out of the store and made his own ice cream.
Two later historical pamphlets indicate Jonathan & Eleanor Wilkin's first failed attempt at a store (which one would assume is the period of 1865-68 stated by Wood) was east of the mill in a house owned by Sam Steve. In the early 1970's this same house was owned by one Frances Stove.
Wood indicates that Jonathan & Eleanor Wilkin moved back to Leesburg (6 miles northeast of Volant) in 1868 and then to Springfield Falls (2 miles north of Leesburg) where they erected a house and store room at the old furnace. And they also became interested in a planing mill at the furnace. Then in 1872 they returned to Volant.

Stalking A Rainbow Golden Trout HD
Had to re-upload for HD quality.
The next video was supposed to be an hour long documentary on my Panama trip last January & near the end of completion my film editing software froze on me & after a force quit & restart my project disappeared. I spent many hours going threw all the footage that the group & I shot, along with many more hours of time editing the footage & implementing special effects (beyond what I have done before), only for the project to crap out on me toward the end. I'm going to give it another go & put it all back together again but wanted a break from working on the Panama stuff & decided to put together something short & simple, especially since it's been a while since my last video post. While Panama will have to wait here is a video of a very interesting trout I recently caught. There is a little spring fed pond that I try to visit at least once a year, a little spot I generally like to keep to myself. This pond hosts an annual early spring trout derby, the trout stocked in the pond for this event come from a commercial hatchery. What makes this little pond special is it's ability to support trout year round & that it usually receives 1 or 2 golden rainbow trout (also know as palomino trout & golden trout) per year for this derby. Obviously that's not many at all, hence my tight lips. The state hatcheries of Massachusetts unfortunately do not raise or stock these fish, making each one caught a very special catch, regardless of size. Every year I avoid the derby altogether & let everyone else have a crack at them first. I usually show up weeks or months afterwards to see if any golden's still remain. After a walk around the pond it doesn't usually take long to figure out if any golden rainbows remain, since they typically stand out like a gold fish or koi. This trip was no different and when I approached the shore I immediately noticed 1 still remained. They are generally difficult to catch & typically tease anglers by often showing interesting in a bait or lure only to snub the bait at the last second. They can also be very skittish. Of the handful I have caught over the years this was the easiest of them to catch, by my 4th cast I was hooked up (it's not always like this). I have had some take me 2-4 trips back (2-3 weeks) before finally hooking up. I learned not to over cast & instead cast selectively & let them relax time to time. Over casting causes them to become nervous and therefore not take a bait. Also because there so finicky over what they will take I've found it better to try & get a reaction strike & use their predatory nature against them versus a hunger reaction with still bait. I have caught these fish before & even did a video on them in the past but I was never able to capture the whole experience, like the stalk, take & fight. This time I captured it all & put this quick video together. Next year I'll give it another go & maybe also make a trip to some destination to target larger golden's, like PA. As for now I'm just happy I landed another little gold bar. The fish caught in this video was 14+ inches & caught on a ultra-light spinning rod, loaded with 4 LB test line & a fluorocarbon leader with a spinner. I hope you enjoy the video. Tight Lines All!
