Nicaragua's Volcan Masaya lava lake, October 4, 2016
One of the most amazing 15 minutes of my life, and definitely a bucket list item finally crossed off. Volcano Masaya has been very active this year as a churning lava lake has formed in its caldera. Visitors are allowed to visit for 15 minutes at a time to stand on the edge and look down. Breathtaking!

Santiago Crater, Masaya Volcano National Park, Nicaragua
We recently captured this impressive night footage of the remarkable lava lake in Santiago crater. The Masaya Volcano National Park offers visitors the rare opportunity to see such an active volcano up close. It is the only volcano in the western hemisphere where you are able to drive to the rim!
The Masaya Volcano National Park in Masaya, Nicaragua
The Masaya Volcano National Park comprises an area of 54 km² and includes two volcanoes and five craters. The volcanoes have erupted several times in history, and were feared by both the indigenous people and the Spanish conquerors. The Spanish baptized the active volcano La Boca del Infierno or The Mouth of Hell. They planted a cross, La Cruz de Bobadilla (named after Father Francisco Bobadilla), on the crater lip in the 16th century in order to exorcise the Devil.
The eruptions have had a dramatic impact on the surroundings. Rocks and volcanic ashes still cover the area surrounding the volcanoes. The nature is rough yet peaceful. Different types of vegetation appeared after the eruptions. The park is also inhabited by many different kinds of animals. The park's wildlife includes coyotes, skunks, raccoons, opossums, deer, iguanas, and monkeys.
Visitors can peek over the edge at the Masaya Volcano, and look into the impressive crater, which is continuously emitting smoke and sulfur gases. From this central crater it is possible to start hiking to other craters or viewpoints.

*This video does contain some footage that is not mine. It is the up close and detailed footage of the lava lake and is notated in the video by a screen recording that I took. Aside from that, Hello, and yes, LAVA!! While we were told the Masaya Lava Lake has shrunken from its size in 2016 when it was quite large, we were still able to see about 20% of the active lava lake from the viewing point. Watching the lava boil (which my camera just would not catch any detail on zoom) was simply mesmerizing, and I could have watched for hours. Except you can't, because due to the fumes emitted from the volcano, the park limits the amount of time you can be exposed. Each wave of visitors gets 15 minutes, so find a good spot and enjoy!

Masaya Vocano Nicaragua
Nicaragua, set between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, is a Central American nation known for its dramatic terrain of lakes, volcanoes and beaches. Vast Lake Managua and the iconic stratovolcano Momotombo sit north of the capital Managua. To its south is Granada, noted for its Spanish colonial architecture and an archipelago of navigable islets rich in tropical bird life.
Masaya is a caldera located in Masaya, Nicaragua, 20 km south of the capital Managua. It is Nicaragua's first and largest national park, and one of 78 protected areas of Nicaragua
In 1979, Masaya became Nicaragua's first national park, named Masaya Volcano National Park (Parque Nacional Volcan Masaya). The park has an area of 54 km² includes two volcanoes and five craters,[3] as well as a range of elevations between 100 and 630 meters above sea level. In the park is an underground tunnel formed by lava flows; one can find bats and look inside and observe the glowing lava in the dark crater mouth of the volcano

From this central crater it is possible to start hiking to other craters or viewpoints. Be sure to walk a bit up to get a view of the smoking volcano and the fascinating surroundings. There are several trails that lead to other great views, other craters, or to the Tzinaconostoc Cave in which hundreds of bats house. These special trails vary in distance between 1.4 and 5.9 kilometers and are all guided, with prices between $10 (Tourist) and C$20 (National Tourist) per person. Each trail takes between 1-1½ hour.
An interesting and well-equipped visitors center is located halfway up to the volcano. The center provides information about the Masaya volcano, but also about the other volcanoes in Nicaragua and related geological processes. Visitors can also learn more about the flora and fauna of the park.
Masaya Volcano, Volcan Masaya, Nicaragua
On this business trip with 4Life research to Nicaragua I was able to take a trip to Masaya's volcano. It is one of the most active in all Nicaragua. The views are amazing if not breathtaking. Incredible to think it's just a short drive from Managua. Thumbs up if you ever visited this natural wonder. Comment what other places can compare or have traveled to.
