Lake Atitlan, San pedro la laguna - Guatemala
So, after 4 weeks in Mexico waiting for Alexzandras passport we finally got it!
And our first stop was San Pedro La Laguna at Lake Atitlán in Guatemala!
We totally loved that place from the start, the atmosphere, the views and the people were all wonderful. And the food exceptional!
We stayed for 8 days and we could've stayed alot longer, but time keeps ticking and we have many more adventures to go!
We noticed that alot of staff in the restaurants and cafès were travelers that just like us, they came to San Pedro for a visit but ended up staying for months and even years.
So if you are visiting Guatemala you really have to go to San pedro La Laguna =)
Because we had so much footage from Lake Atitlan we decided to make two episodes.
Here's Part 1, enjoy!
Much love

Funeral procession, San Pedro la Laguna, Guatemala
24 February 2015 - I was sitting in the park outside the town's Catholic Church and this funeral procession happened shortly thereafter. This is a common sight in Guatemala, processions with a marching band pass through town streets along the way to the cemetery...
Going Around San Pedro la Laguna - Guatemala
In this episode of Unplugged, DBH shows some beautiful shots of Lake Atitlan from above before heading down to the lake's shores. Here you can see the town of Panajachel, the beautiful mountainous landscape and various volcanoes surrounding the sparkling blue waters. Heading down to the shore, David takes off for a boat ride out to San Pedro, a laid back lake town where he does a quick tour of the main tourist area. Bumping into some locals, he learns about a youth project Help Me Paint My Future which helps underprivileged kids battle poverty in the San Pedro area. For more information on this organization, check out their website- and to learn more about Lake Atitlan and the San Pedro area, check out the DBH Guide to Guatemala, available for your Kindle as well.

Lake Atitlan from Volcán San Pedro, Guatemala
28 February 2015 - A spectacular view of Lake Atitlan from atop Volcán San Pedro, 3020 metres above sea level. It took us about 3 hours to hike to the top from San Pedro's pier (we took the boat in from Jaibalito) and the weather was superb all the way! Apologies for the voices in the background - there were a couple large groups at the summit and there actually isn't that much space to spread around...
San Pedro la Laguna
San Pedro la Laguna is a beautiful traditional Guatemalan community on the shores of Lake Atitlan in the western Highlands. These are scenes from the city, and the coutry surrounding it.
San Pedro Volcano Hike
Are Robbers a Problem Hiking The San Pedro Volcano?
The San Pedro Volcano is one of 37 volcanoes in the country of Guatemala and the oldest of the three that rise above the beautiful Lake Atitlan. San Pedro soars to an impressive height of 3,020 Meters, just shy of 10,000 feet. It is a stratovolcano and not considered active. Summiting San Pedro is a very popular tourist activity in the region, but the trail has been plagued in the past with robbers, causing some uncertainty and fear amongst hikers. To reach the beginning of the hike you travel to the town of San Pedro La Laguna which sits on the volcanoes slopes. For many people including our family this means a boat ride across the lake.
So how safe is it to climb San Pedro? This is one of the most frequently asked questions when people consider this hike, because of it's shaky history with robbers on the trail. Are you going to get robbed if you try to climb San Pedro? This was a question that we asked many people while living in Panajachel before we ever attempted to do the hike. The answer we usually got, was that robbers were not really as much of an issue anymore. This always came with a caveat though, that it was still a possibility. In response to the problems with robbers on the trail, the Town of San Pedro la Laguna sends a pair of police officers up the volcano every day and hiking alone is highly discouraged. Contrary to what some places on the internet say, you do not need to hire a guide to go up the volcano. Guides are included as part of your fee to enter the ecological park that protects the volcano.
In our experience this hike was nothing but fun! It was difficult yes, but robbers were the least of our worries. This doesn't mean that they don't exist however. Talking with our guide and with the local police we learned that they had arrested people just a few weeks prior to our arrival. Just be smart about things. follow the rules, don't hike alone, and stick to the trail. In our opinion robbers on San Pedro are the exception, not the rule and the Guatemalan authorities are doing their best to make this a fun and safe adventure for all to enjoy.

Lakefront Airbnb - Kitchen With A View! Lake Atitlan, San Pedro Guatemala
Discover a great place to stay in an airbnb right on the lakefront with an open-air kitchen with a great view! In Guatemala, we enjoyed spectacular sunrise views over Lake Atitlan and its active volcanoes right outside of San Pedro La Laguna, a beautiful village on Lake Atitlan, Guatemala.
San Pedro is a small village at the foot of a massive volcano and the most popular of the resorts on Lake Atitlan. We stayed at Casa Kawoq, a lake side AirBnB with stunning views of both the lake and its surrounding mountains.
One of our favourite adventures in all of Guatemala was the Indian Nose hike, with panomaric views of Lake Atitlan at sunrise. It is a steep but short 45 minute hike up a small mountain, in the pitch black to get there before sunrise. Detailed info on how to DIY the Indian Nose hike, which leaves from the village of Santa Clara:

Hiking Volcán San Pedro, Guatemala
El lago Atitlan esta rodeado de volcanes. Subir a uno no es tarea fácil, y menos cuando estamos hablando de mil metros de desnivel. Nosotros logramos subir al Volcan San Pedro en el Lago Atitlan de Guatemala .Mucho esfuerzo, pero este mereció la pena. Las vistas desde arriba son INMEJORABLES!!
