What should South Africa do with its monuments to apartheid?
Some people’s pain is another people’s heritage.
In South Africa, monuments to apartheid and colonialism represent oppression, enslavement and stolen land to some — and pioneering founders to others.
We look at the Voortrekker Monument, Freedom Park, and the statue of British colonialist Cecil John Rhodes.
Whether in South Africa, or the United States, racism is its own monument to an awful past, and an all too common reality for so many people of color, whether overtly or structurally.
Freedom of speech is an essential right, but when the people who were oppressed under systems like apartheid and Jim Crow have yet to fully enjoy the freedom of all their rights, flying a flag that represents historical systems of oppression could be seen as an affront to everyone’s freedom.

The majestic Voortrekker Monument is situated in the northern part of South Africa in the Pretoria (Tshwane) region in a nature reserve. It is a unique Monument which commemorates the Pioneer history of Southern Africa and the history of the Afrikaner and is situated in a beautiful setting.
The Monument was inaugurated in 1949. It was designed by architect Gerard Moerdijk. In the Hall of Heroes is the world’s longest historical marble frieze. A tapestry with more than three million stitches is housed in the Cenotaph Hall.
Today it is the most visited heritage site of its kind in Gauteng and one of the top ten cultural historical visitor attractions in the country. It is also the only Grade 1 national Heritage Site in Pretoria. The Monument also manages the Blood River Heritage Site.

The Voortrekkers and Blood River
The battle at Blood River between the Zulus and the Voortrekkers marks one of the bloodiest battles in South African history. With many different interpretations about what really happened in 1838, this is one of them, told by Christo Rabie, Head of Education at the Voortrekker monument. Nina Oosthuizen reports.
Cloudy day disappoints Voortrekker Monument guests
Hundreds of South Africans and tourists were disappointed when the low clouds prevented a rare ray of sunshine to hit the cenotaph at noon at the Voortrekker monument in Pretoria on Tuesday.
The monument was designed specifically in such a way that a ray of sunshine light up the words ons vir jou Suid-Afrika meaning “We for you South Africa” on the cenotaph at 12 o'clock only on 16 December, each year.
Voortrekker Celebrations
The commanders converge on Pretoria where a camp has been pitched near the site for the memorial monument. A great march past is held, Boy Scouts and Girl Guides participating and bearing the old republican flags. The first stone of the monument is laid by three women descendants of the first pioneers. Covered wagons and occupants. Nairobi Voortrekkers - Sir Robert Brooke Popham, the Governor of Kenya, arrives in an ox drawn wagon at the camp of the Dutch settlers on the occasion of the great Voortrek. The governor opens a hall to commemorate the trek and the dress conforms with the South African style.

Voortrekker Monument plays host to HomeComing Africa 2017
A-Reece, Shomadjozi, Mafikizolo and rapper AKA are some of the artists that will headline HomeComing Africa which takes place at the at the Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria on Saturday 30th September 2017. The event is a celebration of African music, culture and lifestyle as well as the building of the cultural bridge between international artists and local support bases.

DINGAAN'S DAY IN SOUTH AFRICA

Pretoria chosen as a site for National Heritage Monument
Morning Live is in Pretoria for a special launch to acknowledge and celebrate those who have fought for our freedom. The Department of Arts and Culture is this morning launching the National Heritage Monument here at the Groenkloof Nature Reserve in Pretoria. The monument is on a site which is called the Long Walk to Freedom. It comprises 400 life size statues of Precolonial, Colonial and Anti-Apartheid struggle heroes and heroines. So far Fifty-eight life-size statues have been completed.
We are joined by the executive mayor of Tshwane Kgosientso Ramokgopa.
