Vouliagmeni (Greek: Βουλιαγμένη, meaning sunken) is a seaside town 25 km south of Athens, Greece.
Immediately to the south of town and very close to the sea, a rare geophysical formation is to be found that gave the suburb its modern name: Lake Vouliagmeni (Sunken Lake), a small brackish water lake fed by underground currents.
Because of its constant and comfortable water temperature, the lake functions as a year-round spa.

The city of Athens is located within a basin and it is surrounded by four mountains. We can find five major rivers running through Athens and five major lakes are located within the urban structure of the city. Vouliagmeni lake, which means ‘sunken lake’, is something more than a usual urban lake. It is a rare geological phenomenon of unique beauty and a majestic natural spa, just few kilometers away from the centre of Athens. It comprises nature’s therapeutic powers with the Greek inclination for elegance and relaxed enjoyment.
Located less than twenty kilometers from Athens’ centre and with many different ways to access the lake, either by car and taxi or by bus, Vouliagmeni Lake lies across the ‘Athenian Riviera’, a coastal avenue full of sunlight, palm trees and the smell of the sea salt.
The lake’s width is 550 meters and its length is 1825 meters, a natural pool! The temperature of the water of the lake remains through the whole year at 24 Celsius degrees. The thermal waters, an underwater cave which is only partly explored and the lake’s rare and unique flora comprise an unbeatable combination!
A visitor can enjoy the warm therapeutic waters, view the imposing mountain of Hymettus, can swim or simply enjoy one of the finest restaurants in Attica, which is waiting for him or her at the lake-side.

Greece: First Day in Vouliagmeni
After a two hour flight we finally arrived in Greece. It's our first day here in Vouliagmeni, a town only a few minutes away from Athens. This time it is not really a vacation, we got invited to spend a few days here and of course couldn't say no to this opportunity. We are here with a whole group and there are quite a few activities planned for the coming days. On the first day we just explore the surroundings of the hotel, take a look at the beach and the pool and as always go on our everlasting search for some water. I always need some in my backpack and in the hotel room. Vouliagmeni is a seaside town and former municipality 20 km south of Athens. The beaches are consistently awarded the coveted EU blue flags for environmental excellence. The triathlon competition for the 2004 Summer Olympics took place in this area. The small, rocky islet of Fleves lies off shore.

Vouliagmeni which means sunken is a seaside town and former municipality 20 km south of Athens, Greece. I really like and enjoy spending my vacation in Vouliagmeni. It's a very interesting place to be... a touristic destination with many activities and interesting sights.

Vouliagmeni Lake is truly a miracle of nature and is located just 25km from the center of Athens, one of the most beautiful places that you will discover in this city. The environment is very calm and appealing with a well maintained infrastructure.
The magnificent landscape attracts thousands of visitors every year. It is a mineral spa with many healing properties for such ailments as eczema and dermatological diseases, neuralgia, headaches, disfiguring arthritis, chronic gynecological diseases, lumbago, sciatica and other problems. The lake is about 50 centimeters above sea level and so it is constantly overflowing and being replenished by the hot springs beneath it. There are many myths and stories about lost divers and fairies in the lake.
The lake’s water composition consists of potassium, natrium, lithium, ammonium, calcium, ferrum, chloride, iodine, and is slightly radioactive. All these elements provide relief from ailments. When chemistry professor Anastasios Christomanos described the lake in 1889, he noted the curative properties of its waters.
The lake is surrounded by beach chairs and umbrellas and there is a cafe-bar-restaurant too. The lake is excellent for swimming for therapy as well as for pleasure and there is equipment for helping those who find it difficult or impossible to get into the water on their own. During the summer Lake Vouliagmeni offers hot spring baths, hydrotherapy and physiotherapy.
