MOVED TO TEARS IN ANTWERP, BELGIUM (LONELY PLANET BEST IN TRAVEL 2018) | Eileen Aldis
Antwerp, Belgium has been named one of Lonely Planet's top 10 cities for Best In Travel 2018. After visiting this historic Belgian city, Marc and I aren't surprised at all. When we decided to go there, we didn't know what to expect and were taken by surprise. We thought Antwerp had a lot to offer and wished we had more time there. The people were friendly, the buildings beautiful, and the food delicious. We started our day exploring at the oldest house in Antwerp -
now a protected monument - when we realized it was right around the corner from our Airbnb. It was built around 1480 and has survived six wars and more than five hundred years. Next we dipped into a vintage store called Riot because I have a weakness for thrift shopping and was on the hunt for a warm winter coat. After that we walked to Grote Markt (the main square) where you find the town hall and a statue of local hero, Brabo. The story goes that long ago there was a giant named Antigoon who stopped all boatmen on the Scheldt River to demand a toll. Anyone who resisted had their hand cut off and thrown in the river. A young man named Brabo killed Antigoon and cut off his hand and threw it in the river. This is how Antwerp got its name. In Dutch it's called Antwerpen from 'hand werpen' which means hand throw. We strolled along to Het Steen which is a castle and also the oldest building in Antwerp. It's located right on the Scheldt River and we found a plaque commemorating Canadian soldiers who had fought to protect Antwerp and its harbour during World War II. Standing there thinking about the connection between Canada and Belgium and all the lives lost I was really moved. Antwerp is well known for its diamond industry. It has a large diamond district (known as the Diamond Quarter) where most of the world's diamonds pass through annually: billions and billions of bling. We ended the day with - what else? - Belgian fries. NOT French fries. The local specialty is stoofvlees which is a beef stew on top of fries with mayonnaise. It was delicious and I intend to eat as many fries as possible in Belgium! Hope you enjoy this tour around Antwerp!

Antwerp, Flanders, Belgium - virtual tour
Antwerp is a city in Belgium, the capital of Antwerp province in the region of Flanders. It is the most populous city proper in Belgium. Its metropolitan area houses around 1,200,000 people, which is second behind Brussels.
Antwerp is an international port city on Belgium’s River Scheldt, with history dating to the Middle Ages. In its center, the centuries-old Diamond District houses thousands of traders, cutters and polishers. Its Royal Academy of Fine Arts, founded in 1663, is today a well-known European fashion academy, where the local designers the Antwerp Six made the city a hotbed for the 1980s avant-garde.
Antwerp is on the River Scheldt, linked to the North Sea by the Westerschelde estuary. The Port of Antwerp is one of the biggest in the world, ranking second in Europe and within the top 20 globally.
Antwerp has long been an important city in the Low Countries, both economically and culturally, especially before the Spanish Fury (1576) in the Dutch Revolt. The inhabitants of Antwerp are nicknamed Sinjoren, after the Spanish honorific señor or French seigneur, lord, referring to the Spanish noblemen who ruled the city in the 17th century. The city also hosted the 1920 Summer Olympics.

Brussels is also the capital of the European Commission which employs upwards of 40,000 people.

Wild camping is illegal in Belgium, however if you want to try your luck ask the police and or local council authority.

BigLift's Happy River transporting 130,000 FRT for Tobolsk 2 Project
BigLift's Happy River transported a total volume of 130,000 FRT from Antwerp, Belgium, destined for a remote petrochemical complex located in Tobolsk, Russia, for her client Deugro.
To avoid the congestion at the Port of Sabetta the transshipment operation was conducted in the arctic area of Novy Port. This remote port is located approximately 300 nautical miles south of Sabetta within the Gulf of Ob and does not have any landside infrastructure. All cargo needed to be discharged on anchorage while facing the harsh local weather and hostile environment.

MOST CHARMING CITY IN EUROPE? (BRUGES, BELGIUM TOUR) | Eileen Aldis
Bruges, Belgium might just be the most charming city in Europe. If you closed your eyes and imagined a picturesque, fairytale, travel-back-in-time, absolutely breath-taking European city I'd guess that Bruges is pretty close to what's in your head. It's what European vacation dreams are made of. A veritable time capsule of medieval architecture, It's easy to understand why it's a UNESCO World Heritage City. It is rare to see so many streets of buildings all so well preserved. Walking around is like being transported back in time and history here is on another level. This town hall? It was the seat of government for more than six hundred years. This old hospital? It's been a hospital since the 1100s (and only stopped in the 1970s). The reason why Bruges is so well preserved has a twist: the city was too poor to renovate and rebuild. Bruges has experienced periods of great wealth, great poverty, and great wealth. During the down times, citizens didn't have the cash to make 'improvements' to their houses and to this scarcity we owe a great deal! Ironically, the current citizens of Bruges benefit from their forebears' inability to knock things down and rebuild. Bruges is now a huge draw for tourists from around the world who flock to see the same buildings people were too poor to change. Huzzah! This is why I love history!
Our day in Bruges started at the Folklore Museum. It's only 4 Euro and you can get a nice overview of life in the city in the 19th and 20th centuries. Don't forget to look for the black cat who lives there. He's rare to see and is one of a long line of black cats who call the museum home. We then walked (you can walk everywhere) to the Burg Square where you'll find the Stadhuis (town hall) and a little further on is the Grote Markt. The latter is the main square where you'll find see the Belfry (Belfort) and dozens of tourists. Bruges is known for two things: an abundance of beauty and an abundance of tourists seeking it. But no one cares because you're so stunned at the charming city around you. We walked on to the Church of Our Lady where the altar piece is a Michelangelo sculpture of the Madonna and Child. Made of Carrara marble, it's been stolen twice and is now safe again to view at the church. Across the street is Sint-Janshospitaal - the one that was a hospital from the 1100s to the 1970s. Now you'll find religious art and - my favourite - examples of old ambulances. A visit here makes you really appreciate modern medicine. It started to rain and we were getting hungry so we headed to the Friet Museum (Fry Museum). How could we visit Belgium without doing a deep dive into the history of fries?! We wanted to find out why so many people mistakenly call them 'French fries' - we also wanted to eat fries. Check and check. It stopped raining so we ended the Bruges tour by boarding a river cruise because there are parts of the city only visible from the water. I'd definitely recommend a boat ride if you're visiting Bruges - it's relaxing and offers a unique perspective not seen by other means. We absolutely loved visiting Bruges and hope you enjoyed this visit to the jewel of Belgium.

THE PERFECT AIRBNB ACCOMMODATION (BRUGES, BELGIUM APARTMENT TOUR AND REVIEW) | Eileen Aldis
Since giving up a permanent home and embracing full-time travel, we've stayed in a ton of different types of accommodation. Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's not. I receive a bunch of questions about where to stay, how to use Airbnb, how Airbnb works, and what our experiences have been. The modern Airbnb where we stayed in Bruges, Belgium was so exceptional that I wanted to make a whole apartment tour showing you why and giving a review. It felt like the perfect Airbnb accommodation. What makes the difference anywhere is that when you walk in, you instantly feel like you're home. I've learned that it's not only about stylish design and how a place looks but also - mostly - all the little cozy details that make a house a home. This modern house was full of thoughtful details that let us know someone cared. The aesthetic felt minimalist and calming while at the same time having everything we could possibly need - and then some! The location was also removed from the main area where you find all the tourist activity which made it an extra relaxing retreat. Moving around the house, you can tell that the Airbnb host really went above and beyond to create a space that was functional, practical, warm, and inviting. When you first walk in our host had left out plenty of maps, business cards, and recommendations for local restaurants, bars, shops, and museums. She was very specific about what was good where and when to go. This help is invaluable when you've just arrived in a new place and don't know where to start. She also left coffee, (with cream and sugar!), Belgian beer, and oranges to make freshly squeezed juice in the kitchen for us. I've never before been to an Airbnb where you can enjoy a welcome drink without having to first locate a grocery store. How thoughtful is that?! The kitchen is most often where I notice things are missing. The place we stayed before this one didn't have a knife sharper than a butter knife. I literally couldn't have cut a tomato with it let alone done much actual cooking. This Bruges kitchen was well stocked with high quality pots, pans, utensils, and appliances. It even had two different kinds of coffee makers so you could choose which you prefer: pods or drip. You could cook a full on feast in this kitchen. There was also a big table to eat and work at which is something we always look for. When we work it's important to have a table to spread out on. The living room was cozy with comfortable furniture, a fireplace, a jar of candy to help yourself to, and a stack of magazines that made it feel homey. Even the hangers at the front door had been thought through because they were the 'no slip' kind that things don't slide off of. The backyard was gorgeous and had two different sitting areas to enjoy. It was a well maintained sanctuary with fruit trees and privacy from the neighbours. The main bedroom upstairs had the most comfortable bed I've slept in ever at an Airbnb. I also usually sleep with my own pillow that I travel around with but I didn't use it here. The pillow provided was that good! Our Airbnb host had even left authentic Belgian chocolates by our pillows. Such a sweet detail. The bathroom was stocked with any toiletries you might have forgotten and there were plenty of towels. Overall, this Airbnb was a dream and we loved staying there. I hope this video will help Airbnb hosts and guests with the tips and tricks that make an Airbnb experience really wonderful. It was fun to pretend we were living in Belgium, if only temporarily. Hope you enjoyed this! Would love to hear what details get you excited!
