TOUR OF ALLDERS OF CROYDON, 2012 | Just Days Before Closing FOREVER
One of the biggest department stores in London is closing with the loss of 850 jobs.
Allders has been open in Croydon since 1862 and became the flagship store of a chain across England.
But it went into administration in June. When a buyer for the firm could not be found 22 September was announced as the last day of trading.
Croydon Council said the stricken firm had been unable to raise enough working capital.
Administrators Duff & Phelps said: We recognise that the store is an historic and iconic landmark in the local community.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff of Allders, the concession partners, Croydon Council and the landlord Minerva for their continued support throughout the administration trading period.
Croydon Council leader Mike Fisher said: We're tremendously sad.
It has been part of the town for a very long time.
Unfortunately, Allders has been unable to keep up with the competition in the modern retail market.
Gavin Barwell, Conservative MP for Croydon Central, has called it a heavy blow for the town following the riots in Croydon last year and Nestle's decision to leave in January.
Croydon Documentary. Part 1 - The High-rise and Fall
Love it or loathe it, Croydon is a remarkable place. The result of radical architectural and urban experiments in the 1960s, it is a strange, challenging and unique piece of city.
In the first of a two-part documentary from the Architecture Foundation, Phineas Harper investigates Croydon's history, piecing together a story of big visions with a whiff of corruption.
This documentary is made possible thanks to the generous support of HawkinsBrown, an architecture firm actively engaged in improving the future of Croydon.
ABOUT THE ARCHITECTURE FOUNDATION
For over 20 years, the Architecture Foundation has brought together professionals from across the built environment to discuss and act on issues related to design and the built environment. With a renewed focus on the city and the critical intersection of architecture and politics, the Architecture Foundation works to effect meaningful change on policy and practice.

Eight people are being questioned by police on suspicion of the attempted murder of the Kurdish Iranian victim following Friday's attack in Shrublands Avenue, Croydon.
Those involved in the attack have been labelled scum by the local MP.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan also condemned the attack.
Detectives made three further arrests on Sunday two men aged 23 and 26 and a 17 year old girl.
Five others who were arrested on Saturday four men and one woman, all aged 20 or 24 remain in custody.
A 20 year old woman arrested on Saturday has been released with no further action, the Metropolitan Police said.

You couldn't see who was hitting who. There was one person, the one who ended up in hospital, he was getting absolutely beaten up.

Valley Park Croydon on a Sunday Afternoon
Valley Park in Croydon is an out of town shopping village with B&Q, Ikea, a cinema, food places, bowling, DFS etc etc etc.
On Sundays and Bank Holidays it can be a nightmare to get out. We were lucky in that it took us just under half an hour, because an hour and a half is not unusual.
