Ghost Hunt S1 E07 - St Bathans, Central Otago
In its heyday, the gold-mining town of St Bathans boasted a population of over 2000; today it is a ghost-town, with 6 residents. But these isolated citizens are not alone, the number of the 'undead' actually surpasses the number of the living! St Bathan's most famous spirit is The Rose, a prostitute who was raped and strangled in her room.
A rare fun Ghost show from New Zealand that was never released on DVD and is hard to find a good copy of, most copies floating about have foreign subtitles on, these don't and are in the best quality available and I want to upload it to help keep this show alive for years to come. Enjoy!
Update: Due to Warner Music Australia recently blocking these episodes in several countries I had to mute the opening theme 'Evermore - Into the Ocean (Calling You)' to allow them to be seen worldwide again. Such a shame but better than losing the whole video.

30 Hyde to Ranfurly on a Boom Trike
Day Six of the Central Otago holiday continues, as we leave Middlemarch heading for St Bathans to stay in the haunted Vulcan Hotel. This video begins at Hyde, because we forgot to start filming as we left Middlemarch (doh) and ends at Ranfurly where we stopped for fuel.
Plenty to see along the way, especially some of the old railway bridges, such as the one we found at Tiroiti. The weather was warm and dry, providing great visibility on the road. Rough road surfacing has created a bumpy video, so apologies for that.
Enjoy the video. Feel free to comment.

31 Naseby to St Bathans on a Boom Trike
The final leg of the journey for this one day trip, that started in the morning at Dunedin, and now finishes at St Bathans.
From Ranfurly we detour off the main highway to check out Naseby. Naseby was one home to 4,000 gold miners, but todays resident population is closer to 100. During the heat of the summer, visitors flock to Naseby to enjoy the natural swimming holes, and in winter, visitors come for the curling. Naseby has retained a number of heritage buildings from the gold rush era, giving it a unique charm, and definitely worth the detour.
After Naseby, the main highway takes us past Wedderburn, where the railway storage shed was made famous after a local artist, Grahame Sydney painted it in winter, entitled July in Manioto.
Further down the highway we detour again to Oturehua. Oturehua is 40kms from Alexandra and approximately 10kms from Wedderburn. Originally known as Rough Ridge after the range of hills running northeast, Oturehua translates to ‘the sun God’. Boasting views of Mt Ida and the famous Hawkdun Range, it is a picturesque farming community. Still trading today is Gilchrist's Store with its 1899 interior and original merchandise on the shelves. Of the same era, is The Oturehua Tavern, once known as Rough Ridge Railway Hotel.
Then we are on to St Bathans, via a slight hic up on directions. We had been looking forward to staying overnight in the haunted Vulcan Hotel, and let us just say, the hotel did not disappoint! Delicious meal and after dusk virtually no one around, so we shared the pub with a handful of locals and another motorcycling couple who were touring too. Another highly recommended detour off the main highway, with the Blue Lake cited just below the Vulcan Hotel.
Enjoy the video. Feel free to comment.
