Lithuania: Soviet symbols removed from Vytautas the Great Bridge
Public workers finished removing 32 Soviet symbols from the Vytautas the Great Bridge in Kaunas on Wednesday to coincide with the day Lithuania marked the 25th anniversary of its declaration of independence from the Soviet Union.

Kaunas is the second-largest city in Lithuania after Vilnius and has historically been a leading centre of Lithuanian economic, academic, and cultural life. Kaunas is home to a variety of festivals and events, including the famous Kaunas Jazz festival, Hanza days, Operetta, Pažaislis Classical Music festival, Bike show, Kaunas city days, Songs festival ( listed by UNESCO), International Modern Dance Festival and much more. The Old Town has a collection of ancient architectural monuments, the remnants of the 14th century with remains of Kaunas castle, the buildings of the Middle Ages in the Gothic and Art Déco styles. The Kaunas Fortress has a valuable military heritage composed of a number of buldings and walls that used to be a military complex. There are nine Forts around the city and the IXth Fort serves as a museum. The macabre collection of nearly 3,000 devils at the Devils’ Museum and the exhibitions showing the unique artistic styles of composer and painter M. K. Ciurlionis, as well as J. Maciunas initiator of the avant-garde Fluxus art movement. The Funicular in the city is a unique means of transportation, is still in use today, including the genuine pre-war wagon, wooden seats, and stop platforms. Even today the funicular takes people up to the hill, from which the panorama of the Kaunas city centre and Old town is wide open. Kaunas is the only city among Baltic States, where such means of transportation is available. Kaunas is located at the confluence of the two largest Lithuanian rivers, the Nemunas and the Neris, and near the Kaunas Reservoir, the largest body of water entirely in Lithuania. Since the restoration of independence, improving substantially air and land transport links with Western Europe have made Kaunas easily accessible to foreign tourists.

Kaunas Aleksotas bridge lights at night
Vytautas the Great Bridge, also known as Aleksotas Bridge before 1930 and from 1940 until 23 February 2008, crosses the Nemunas River to connect Aleksotas and Old Town in Kaunas, Lithuania. Its length exceeds 256 meters, and its width is of 16 meters.

Trakai Island Castle (Lithuanian: Trakų salos pilis) is an island castle located in Trakai, Lithuania on an island in Lake Galvė. The construction of the stone castle was begun in the 14th century by Kęstutis, and around 1409 major works were completed by his son Vytautas the Great, who died in this castle in 1430. Trakai was one of the main centres of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the castle held great strategic importance.

Biržai Castle is a castle in Biržai, Lithuania. Construction of the earth bastion-type castle started in 1586 by the order of Krzysztof Mikołaj the Lightning Radziwiłł. In 1575, preparing for this construction, a dam was built on the Agluona and Apaščia rivers at their confluence, and the artificial Lake Širvėna, covering about 40 km², was created. Major castle building works were finished in 1589.
Astravas Manor is a manor in Biržai suburb Astravas, Lithuania. It was built for Jan Tyszkewicz in 1849–1862 in neoclassical style by architect Tomasz Tyszecki. The manor's next owner Michael Tyszkiewicz let his relative Eustachy Tyszkiewicz to settle there so as to devote all his time to his scholarly pursuits. The damage that the estate sustained during World War II was repaired between 1955 and 1962. The mansion has a rich classical interior decorated with many sculptures. Decorative sculptures of Medici lions that stood at the entrance to the manor were replaced with copies, with the original sculptures being moved to the Vytautas the Great War Museum in Kaunas. The manor complex has a large classical park with a lot of tiny artificial lakes located within it.

Lithuania: US-led NATO military convoy halts in Lithuania
A convoy of NATO military vehicles on its way from Estonia to Germany arrived in the Lithuanian town of Marijampole, Tuesday as part of a 1,770-km (1,100-mile) tour through six European countries. Several Dutch CV90 Combat Vehicles and two US Stryker armoured personnel carriers were among the military hardware on show as military helicopters flew overhead.
