Amazing LAKSAM, NASI DAGANG- Malay breakfast dishes in SELANGOR | Food and Travel Channel | Malaysia
Subscribe for more food and travel videos:
We have been on the hunt for laksam ever since we were in Kelantan and were thrilled when one of our subscribers contacted us to let us know about a spot she visits almost every day for breakfast which serves laksam! We head to Shah Alam in Selangor, Malaysia to eat up a storm.
We loved trying this noodle dish which is especially popular in the eastern states of Peninsular Malaysia (Kelantan and Terengganu). The laksam we sampled in this video was a Kelantanese version made by an Aunty who has been selling this dish in the same spot for nearly 20 years. Laksam is made up of a rice noodles rolls cut up into bite sized pieces, a gravy made up of coconut milk and ground fish (sardine), fresh vegetables and sambal. The broth tastes intensely of fish and is smooth and creamy. The vegetables and herbs are fragrant and the sambal adds a great spice. We love laksam!
We also sample a plate of nasi dagang which is a common breakfast dish in Kelantan made up of a mixture of sticky rice and normal rice, fried coconut, cucumber pickles and a side dish. Our favourite is gulai ikan tongkol a local tuna curry-like dish. It’s delicious!
Our morning turns into a bit of a jalan jalan cari makan food-hunting adventure! We head to a popular nasi campur (mixed rice spot) and sample some kambing korma (mutton curry) and pajeri nanas (pineapple curry). Warung Salumar where we are eating has an array of delicious looking dishes for nasi campur and we can’t wait to return to sample them properly.
Finally we finish with some traditional Malay desserts. Bubur or sweet porridge including a corn, black sticky rice and mung bean version plus some fermented tapioca root (tapai ubi) and tapioca root covered in coconut and sugar.
Thanks so much to Foziah, Huda, Asha, Amy and Afiqah for an awesome morning discovering more of Malaysia’s amazing food.

Street Food in Malaysia - ULTIMATE MALAYSIAN FOOD in Kuala Lumpur!
Thanks to Oh My Media:

T-shirts and caps:
Huge thank you to Fadhlur for reaching out and taking us on a Malaysian street food tour of Kuala Lumpur. It was an amazing day, and I have so much love to Malaysia as it was one of the first countries where I started making street food videos - as you’ll see in the video!
Ok, here are all the street food stalls and restaurants we ate at on this tour:
Mansion Tea Stall
The thing to order here is the roti canai special, roti that chopped up, then doused in a variety of curry sauces, sambal, and a few soft boiled eggs. It’s a perfect way to begin your day in Kuala Lumpur. Price - 2.80 RM ($0.68) per plate
Nasi Lemak Tanglin
Nasi lemak is often considered the national food of Malaysia, and there are plenty of places to eat it throughout Kuala Lumpur. Having been around since 1948, Nasi Lemak Tanglin is a place I had wanted to go for a while. It was overall very good, with a nice laid back atmosphere and surrounded by nature. Nasi lemak - about 8 RM ($1.94) per plate
Ikan Bakar Seri Melaka (Jalan Bellamy)
One of my favorite places to eat ikan bakar, grilled fish, is on Jalan Bellamy. Back in 2012, I had to hike over a highway and climb a few fences to get there as I was only on foot. In this video, I’m a bit older, and we had a car! The ikan bakar was just as good as I remember it. Total price - 68 RM ($16.51) for everything
Sri Ganapathi Mess
One of the best things about Malaysian food is its incredible diversity, including Malay, Chinese, and Indian food. Banana leaf south Indian food is very popular and I was recommended to try Sri Ganapathi Mess, a restaurant tucked away into a home. An amazing south Indian food experience in Kuala Lumpur. Price - 59 RM ($14.32) for 4 people
Kedai Kopi Lai Foong
Finally, another dish that many had recommended me was the unique clam noodles in Kuala Lumpur Chinatown at the legendary Kedai Kopi Lai Foong. It was delicious, and a perfect way to end an amazing Malaysian street food tour in Kuala Lumpur. Price - 10 RM ($2.43) per bowl
Again, thank you to Oh My Media Malaysia for taking us around:

Hi guys, if you’ve been following our food adventure in Malaysia you’ll know that we like to visit local spots who serve incredible food and that we’re willing to travel for the pleasure. The eatery we visited in this video, Itik Salai Masthar ticked all the boxes for us- hope you enjoy watching this one. Make sure you’ve subscribed to our channel: so you don’t miss out on more food videos! Thanks for watching, commenting, liking and sharing our content guys. Cheers,Thomas & Sheena
Masak lemak cili api is a dish that originates from the state of Negeri Sembilan. It’s a dish made up of a coconut milk and turmeric gravy cooked with various proteins. Perhaps the most well know proteins are those which are smoked like beef, chicken, catfish and duck.
We visit Itik Salai Masthar in Bandar Baru Bangi in Selangor to sample this amazing fish.
Itik Salai Masthar is a real locals’ spot. An open air kitchen features chefs slapping whole ducks and big cuts of beef onto the smoky grill and gigantic woks filled with bubbling gravy. We have heard the gravy is particularly creamy here- the owner of the eatery used to be in the coconut business so knows exactly where to source fresh and creamy coconuts.
We eat:
- daging salai masak lemak cili api (smoked beef);
- ikan keli salai masak lemak cili api (smoked catfish);
- itik salad masak lemak cili api (smoked duck);
- accompanied with ulam (fresh, raw vegetables), sambal and rice.
Verdict? Spicy, creamy gravy and incredibly tender, smoky and flavoursome meats. A must visit!!
Where we ate:

Durian SS2 Feasting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia! We had an amazing subscriber meet up in SS2, Kuala Lumpur! Thanks so much for coming out everyone! The durian fruit is one of the most controversial fruits in Southeast Asia, because of its smelly aroma and amazing flavor. If you love it, you will become addicted to it and the durian challenge will not be a challenge, but a joy to partake in because you will crave it everywhere you go.
We chose Wai Durian's SS2 stall in Kuala Lumpur because he has a huge selection of durian that cannot be beaten and because the first time I came to Malaysia, he hooked me up with the best durians. Since the last time I came here, his stall has really grown!
This is the address of Wai's Durian SS2 Stall:
193, Jalan SS 2/24, SS 2, 47300 Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia
If you come here, you can take a taxi or a grab car to SS2 Durian, about a 30-minute ride from downtown Kuala Lumpur (Petaling street area). It is totally worth the ride. If you come during the durian season (June to August), they will also likely have a durian buffet on! All you can eat durian! Nothing better!

Our last day in Penang continued with an excursion to Penang National Park. There were 2 options to explore the park either by hiking or boating. We opt for boating as we brought the children. ????
The boat costed RM200 to 2 beaches which were Turtle Beach (turtle sanctuary) and Monkey Beach (tourist attraction for water activities).
It was a windy day, so the waves were higher than usual. We had a roller coaster ride ???? to our destination.

On the menu is:
- kari kepala ikan (fish head curry)
- poached stingray in tamarind water topped with tomato, red onion, chilli

- masak lemak nangka or jackfruit cooked in a coconut and turmeric gravy
- kerabu, a salad made from grated, toasted coconut, herbs and tripe

For dessert we gather some tapioca from the garden, peel it, cut it into chunks and boil it. It’s then served with grated coconut and cane sugar.
What a feast! A huge terima kasih banyak to Syaza and her amazing family for their hospitality and generosity. We loved the food, laughs and conversation we shared with you all! See you all again soon!

We visit 3 kenduri- wedding feasts where guests visit the bride, groom and their families to congratulate them and to partake in a wedding feast! We sample traditional wedding dishes like beef rendang and ayam masak merah (chilli chicken).
Getting to eat delicious food at a Malaysian wedding was a truly incredible experience. Malay weddings are unique and different to weddings where we're from in New Zealand. The ceremony often takes place on a different day to the reception. The reception or wedding feast is usually cooked by the family or is catered and guests are invited to bring their families to celebrate the union. Guests aren't expected to stay for the whole reception and when they leave are presented with bunga telur (a flower egg that represents fertility) and/or other wedding favours.
What a day! A massive terima kasih banyak to Syaza and her family for inviting us along to celebrate the weddings with them!
We are in Malaysia for the next wee while and would love any food recommendations. Please let us know your favourite places to eat in the comments below. And if you like this video, please give it a thumbs up, share it and subscribe to our channel. Thanks so much for your support.
