The Waalbrug can be found in the 1977 film A Bridge Too Far, Band of Brothers (book) and the computer games: Medal of Honor: Frontline, Medal of Honor: Vanguard, Medal of Honor: Airborne and Battlefield V.The Waalbrug is an arch bridge over the Waal River in Nijmegen, Gelderland, the Netherlands. The full length of the Waalbrug is 604 metres (1,982 ft), the middle of the arch being about 65 metres (213 ft) high. The arch itself is 244.1 metres (801 ft) long and was the longest arch in Europe at the time of construction.
Waalbrug Nijmegen
The 'Oversteek' with its characteristic main span and the flat first spans fits perfectly with the other Waal bridges. However, its landscape context makes it a unique bridge. Thanks to its asymmetric shape and homogenous appearance the crossing is vividly present in the area.
The new city bridge for Nijmegen - the 'Oversteek' ('crossing') - is perfectly integrated into the context. The bridge is responsive to the various atmospheres, situations and areas in the landscape, consisting of the urbanised context of the Waalfront on the southern shore, the fluvial area reaching from the shore to the dyke, the green Oosterhoutsedijk and the city extension on the northern shore. These atmospheres can be found back in the design of the bridge. On the southern shore the 'startup' is interwoven with the complex and rich urban context. The crossing of the river channels is done in one clear gesture: The arch leaps off the southern shore, bounces on the water, then runs out horizontally over the river foreland and the secondary channel, to touch down right behind the Oosterhoutsedijk. Thanks to the continuous road profile with its consistent design the road is experienced as one boulevard.
The City bridge is one big gesture from shore to dyke. The first spans on the southern shore are embedded in a terraced landscape that refers to characteristic elements of the area: the bulwarks in the Waalfrontpark and the undulating Valkhof. A couple of comfortable public spaces invite to relax and play. The large arch crossing the Waal with its asymmetric supports creates a new trademark for the city.
The structure of the bridge is clearly hierarchical. The various parts such as arch, deck, tension rods and first spans are independent. However, the harmonious combination of all parts creates one entity. Inspired by the existing Waal Bridge, the arch gets the strongest presence, crowning the hierarchy.
The 'Oversteek' will not be realised. The tender was won bij the combination Bam Max Bögl with architects Ney Poulissen.

Netherlands: An Island in Nijmegen | European Journal
The Netherlands is sinking steadily. Almost half the country already lies at or below sea level, and the only way people can protect themselves is with flood protection programs. In Nijmegen, near the Dutch border with Germany, dredgers are about to change one of the country's oldest cities drastically.

Operation Market Garden 1944
Operation Market Garden (17–25 September 1944) was an unsuccessful Allied military operation, fought in the Netherlands and Germany in the Second World War. The operation was split into two sub-operations:
Market – the airborne forces, the First Allied Airborne Army, who would seize bridges
Garden – the ground forces, consisting of the British XXX Corps
Market Garden contained the largest airborne operation up to that point.[e]
Field Marshal Montgomery's strategic goal was to encircle the heart of German industry, the Ruhr, in a pincer movement. The northern end of the pincer would circumvent the northern end of the Siegfried Line giving easier access into Germany. The aim of Operation Market Garden was to establish the northern end of a pincer ready to project deeper into Germany. Allied forces would project north from Belgium, 60 miles (97 km) through the Netherlands, across the Rhine and consolidate north of Arnhem on the Dutch/German border ready to close the pincer.
The operation made massed use of airborne forces, whose tactical objectives were to secure the bridges and allow a rapid advance by armored ground units to consolidate north of Arnhem. The operation required the seizure of the bridges across the Maas (Meuse River), two arms of the Rhine (the Waal and the Lower Rhine) together with crossings over several smaller canals and tributaries.
Several bridges between Eindhoven and Nijmegen were captured at the beginning of the operation. Lieutenant-General Brian Horrocks' XXX Corps ground force advance was delayed by the initial failure of the airborne units to secure bridges at Son and Nijmegen. German forces demolished the bridge over the Wilhelmina Canal at Son before being secured by the 101st Airborne Division. The 82nd Airborne Division's failure to capture the main road bridge over the river Waal at Nijmegen before 20 September also delayed the advance of XXX Corps.
At the furthest point of the airborne operation at Arnhem, the British 1st Airborne Division encountered initial strong resistance. The delays in capturing the bridges at Son and Nijmegen gave time for German forces, including armored divisions, to be moved into Arnhem from Germany. In the ensuing battle, only a small force managed to capture the north end of the Arnhem road bridge and after the ground forces failed to relieve them, the paratroopers were overrun on 21 September. The remainder of the 1st Airborne Division were trapped in a small pocket west of the bridge, having to be evacuated on 25 September.
The Allies had failed to cross the Rhine and the river remained a barrier to their advance into Germany until offensives at Remagen, Oppenheim, Rees and Wesel in March 1945. The failure of Market Garden to form a foothold over the Rhine ended Allied expectations of finishing the war by Christmas 1944.[

Their objective: Nijmegen bridge (Waal-bridge). Made some drone footage of this bridge as well. In the last part of this short video, you'll see the Canadian war cemetery at Groesbeek heights, close to the German/Dutch border.
