The Wachirathan Waterfall was the second major waterfall on the way up to the summit of Inthanon national park Of all the waterfalls we saw in Doi Inthanon National Park, we thought this one had the most power and spray, and it was probably the most impressive of the lot on the mountain’s slopes.

At a height of 2,565 metres, Doi Inthanon is officially the tallest mountain in Thailand. The park was created in 1954 along with 13 others, creating the first group of national parks in Thailand. The main attractions are the summit, and nature trails just below. There are also several significant waterfalls in the area, Mae Ya is the largest waterfall in the park, and a contender for the most spectacular waterfall in Thailand. And Wachirathan, Mae Klang, Sirithan, Mae Pan and Huay Saai Lueang.
The park is conveniently located just an hours drive south of Chiang Mai City. Most people take day trips to Doi Inthanon which can be booked from the old city in Chiang Mai, these are ok if you are short of time, but you need at least 2 days to fully appreciate both the area around the summit, and the waterfalls. Accommodation in the park consists of national park bungalows and campgrounds, privately owned campsites and small privately owned bungalow style resorts.

Today we are at the HIGHEST point of Thailand! In the national park DOI INTHANON! with many things to do including walking in the jungle to get to the top of the mountain but also some small hikes. Then you can also go to the 2 pagodas that are called the Queen Pagoda and King Pagoda! and finally to Wachirathan's waterfall.

scooter thailand day 10 thoen to chomthong
Thailand day 10 on the road - Today we hit the curves, and the hills. The little bike went fantastic, we did not have to drop under 2nd gear, and the road for most of the way was excellent. We stopped at the Wat on top of the pass, and made it the 139km to Chum Thong for lunch. Swim in the pool, and a rest. We have covered 1975km (town to town) since Phuket, and will hit 2000km tomorrow on the way to Wats village in the mountains.

Vachiratharn Waterfall (or Muangyong Waterfall) is a 70-meter-high waterfall, having originated in Mae Klang Gully and being located near km 22, Chomthong-Doi Inthanon Raod. At the Waterfall, there are many caves; and the most beautiful one is Borijinda Cave, a large cave with stalactite and stalagmite, located in the east of the National Park.

Doi Inthanon is the highest mountain in Thailand. It is in Chom Thong District, Chiang Mai Province. This mountain is an ultra prominent peak, known in the past as Doi Luang or Doi Ang Ka, meaning the crow's pond top.
whilst it was pretty wet, cold and miserable it was still worth the effort.

The Wachirathan Waterfall is the second major waterfall on the way up Doi Inthanon. This one is an impressive and powerful waterfall falling (and I'm guessing here) some 50-60m though we've been told the height is more like 80m. The falls also is wide, but the segments to the right of the main tier tend to be stringier and lighter flowing.
When we were there, the falls had enough volume to produce mist, which in turn produced a rainbow. It's obviously a year-round waterfall, but the flow becomes less intense as the dry season progresses. In the wet season, the flow becomes wide enough and misty enough to cover the wall over which it drops and thus can make photography rather difficult without drenching yourself and your camera.
There are plenty of walkways to experience the waterfall. However, the lowest walkway tends to be muddy and slippery from the spray so caution is advised for this section.
Given the ease of access, the falls tends to be quite popular. And once again, as with the inconsistencies in the way Thai is translated into English, you might also see this falls referred to as Vachirathan instead of Wachirathan.

Doi Inthanon National Park covers an area of 1,005 square kilometers is located on Doi Inthanon, Thailand's highest mountain which is 2,565 meters above sea level. Located in between Mae Chaem and Chom Thong, the park is comprised of the largest tract of upper mountain forest which ranges across Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, and ends in Northern Thailand. The mountain ranges gave birth to the main tributaries of the Ping river and forms beautiful waterfalls. The moist and dense evergreen forest is abundant with lichens and wild orchids. The park is also a paradise for bird lovers.

A recommended place to drop by and take a great view of the waterfall. The water is pretty big despite the summer season. The water would have been even bigger during raining season I bet. You can feel a fairly strong breath near the end of the falls like a natural wind blowing though your body. It was very refreshing. I wish they allow us to play with the water but they don't as the sign say don't swim. But I managed to play anyway up the stream since there was no one there. You can walk up the waterfall though the side walk but it's a bit slippery. You need to be careful. I did walked till the end of the road but it's a way out to the main road so no need to climb till the end. Around the of the path you will sea an path led to the upper stream of the fall. It was a big open area of the upper waterfall. There would be a lot of water during raining season and I wonder if we can still walk on that area. I took a bath there and some very nice photos. It worth the climb but again be aware of slippery. Overall it was a very beautiful waterfall.

จากเชียงใหม่ใช้ทางหลวงหมายเลข 108 (เชียงใหม่-จอมทอง) ก่อนถึงอำเภอจอมทองเลี้ยวขวาไปดอยอินทนนท์ ตามทางหลวงหมายเลข 1009(จอมทอง-ยอดดอย) ถึงกิโลเมตรที่ 20.8 มีทางลาดยางเข้าไปถึงน้ำตกชิระธารระยะทาง 500 เมตร
ที่น้ำตกวชิรธาร มีจุดชมวิวอยู่ 2 แห่งหลัก ๆ คือ ทางด้านหน้า ที่สามารถชมความสวยงามของน้ำตกได้แบบเต็มสตรีม หรือจะเสียเวลาเดินขึ้นไปทางด้านบนอีกสักหน่อย ก็จะสามารถมองลงมาเห็นความสวยงามของกระแสน้ำที่ไหลลงมาจากด้านบน สวยงามมาก โดยเฉพาะในช่วงที่มีรุ้งกินน้ำ เป็นภาพที่มีความสวยงามมาก

Doi Inthanon is the highest peak in Thailand at 2,565 Metres above sea level.
The area is covered by evergreen forests which are very unusual and unique to this part of Thailand.
We will visit the great Twin Royal Pagodas built as a tribute to the King and Queen of Thailand as well as beautiful flower gardens.
Then visit Red Karen Hill Tribe village and after that Wachirathan Waterfall, one of the biggest in the Chiang Mai Region.
on the way back to Chiang mai we visit Wat Pra That Chomthong Temple, one of the most holy temples in Chiang Mai.
