The Story of the Old Stone Church
From 1896 through 1905 West Boylston, Massachusetts endured the construction of the Wachusett Reservoir and the destruction of its homes, mills and farms. When the Wachusett Reservoir was completed, the Old Stone Church remained standing as the last remnant of the town which was once in the valley but was now flooded by the new reservoir. In 1974, the State awarded $87,000 for reinforcing the roof and walls of the church building. The following month, the church roof and three walls collapsed requiring rebuilding which was completed in the Spring of 1977.

Here is the history according to the bulletin board at the park:
Self Guided Tour: Old Stone Church
The site of the Old Stone Church, on the shoreline of the Wachusett Reservoir, serves as a monument to thousands of buildings that were removed from the Nashua River Valley to create the reservoir. The church was the only building that was allowed to remain because of its stone construction. All other wooden structures were removed because they could degrade the quality of the drinking water.
The Old Stone Church was a Baptist church built in 1892. It was built as a replacement for the wooden Baptist church that was destroyed by fire two years earlier. The Metropolitan Water Board bought the church from the Baptist Society in 1897. The church still held regular services until 1902 when the state took over the building. All of the interior items, as well as the stained glass windows and church bell, were moved to the new Baptist church location on Church Street in the center of West Boylston. This building remained the Baptist Church until the Freemasons took control of it in 1972. Today, the interior of the building still resembles the Old Stone Church.
The Old Stone Church was declared a National Historical Site in 1973; however by 1975 the roof and major portions of the walls had collapsed. The church was rebuilt over the next few years to replicate the original as much as possible at the cost of $181,000.00. The church was rededicated in 1983 s part of the town of West Boylston's 175th Anniversary.
The Old Stone Church today serves as a popular tourist attraction where visitors come to picnic, take photographs, fish, or simply enjoy the scenic value of the site. Bald Eagles, Common Loons, and several species of ducks can be viewed at the church.

Visitors had the opportunity to walk across the Wachusett Reservoir Dam in Clinton, take photos and ask rangers questions on Saturday afternoon, May 11, 2013. The last two years the state has opened Department of Conservation and Recreation opened the top of the dam to allow visitors to walk across it around Columbus Day weekend. Before that, it was closed to the public for years because of security concerns and potential threats to the water supply. This year, the DCR will start opening the top of the dam to visitors twice each year, in spring and in fall.
The Wachusett Reservoir in Boylston, Clinton, Holden, Hubbardston, Leominster, Princeton, Rutland, Sterling and West Boylston is part of the Nashua River Watershed. The dam in Clinton, completed in 1905, impounds the Nashua River, creating the Wachusett Reservoir. The reservoir is part of Greater Boston's water system, maintained and controlled by the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority. According to the DCR, it was the largest public water supply reservoir in the world when it was completed. At that time, the dam was the largest gravity dam in the world at 205 feet high and 965 feet long.
