Wacky Woods/Enchanted Forest of George Sawchuk (1927 - 2012)
George Sawchuk is an artist who lives on Vancouver Island near Courtenay. I stumbled across his art in a forest near Fanny Bay. Ever since I have visited at any opportunity. You can learn more about the man at
Sadly George passed away in 2012. I have many fond memories of visiting my mother-in-law who lived nearby and popping into the wacky woods as we called them. We often visited George after for a chat and a tour around his studio and a political discussion. There is something very special about his little spot in the woods. If you get near Fanny Bay, check it out and let me know if is still there.

Walden's Way (Wacky Woods) Outdoor Art In the Rainforest
This is a tour of the art displayed in the lush forest on the east coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. It is a melding of Henry Thoreau's Walden with sculpture inspired by Marcel Duchamp. It is pointedly critical of our heavy-handed impact on water, the environment in general and on our society. The works are sometimes humorous, sometimes hopeful, but you can't miss the criticism that is buried in the trees and among the foliage of the underbrush.
The entrance to Walden Way is a few hundred metres down a foot path off the Inland Highway in Fanny Bay, B.C.
There is a pull-out parking space 30 km south of Comox, B.C. along the Inland Highway (Number 19) at Fanny Bay. Near 7659 Island Highway South, British Columbia, Canada, across from Jacob Rd. George Sawchuck created a commentary on our heavy-handed impact on our world expressed through his art in the woods behind his Fanny Bay home. There he has fashioned a thought provoking and visually interesting collection of found objects and carved or constructed sculptures. Mr. Sawchuk died February 2, 2012 at the age of 85. Some of his works are inside galleries, but his intention was to let nature take its course and have the outdoor gallery return to the land.

Why you should make useless things | Simone Giertz
In this joyful, heartfelt talk featuring demos of her wonderfully wacky creations, Simone Giertz shares her craft: making useless robots. Her inventions -- designed to chop vegetables, cut hair, apply lipstick and more -- rarely (if ever) succeed, and that's the point. The true beauty of making useless things [is] this acknowledgment that you don't always know what the best answer is, Giertz says. It turns off that voice in your head that tells you that you know exactly how the world works. Maybe a toothbrush helmet isn't the answer, but at least you're asking the question.
