'World's largest' cemetery struggles to meet demand amid Islamic State violence
An Iraq cemetery, considered to be the largest in the world, is struggling to meet demand amid the continued Islamic State group offensive.
Those managing the Wadi al-Salam graveyard saying they're running out of space fast - and need to expand to cope.
Graves as far as the eye can see.
This is Wadi al-Salam (Valley of Peace) graveyard in the city of Najaf.
Iraqi Shiite Muslims, who have been burying their dead here, are now said to be looking for an alternative - because of an increase in demand.
Deadly battles with Islamic State (IS) group militants is being attributed to the rise in burials.
''We receive dead bodies not only from Iraq but from other countries such as Lebanon, Bahrain, Iran and other countries. Now we have started to receive more dead bodies of Shiite volunteers killed in battles against IS militants, says Faris Muhan, a gravedigger.
Maki Mohammed is in charge of burial ceremonies at the cemetery.
He confirms that space is running short - and fast.
''The cemetery is now very crowded due to the increase of those killed in battles against IS militants. So we are in need of an expansion to the graveyard. Two months from now, we will not be able to find a place to bury the dead, he says.
Wadi al-Salam graveyard is considered to be the largest of its kind in the world, covering almost 1,500 acres and containing around five million bodies.
The site is understood to date back 1,400 years and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The Islamic State group controls large parts of Syria, and captured much of northern and western Iraq last summer.
But its offensive has since stalled in the face of US-led coalition air strikes.
