Climbing Palestine Guidebook
This is the first guidebook to rock climbing in Palestine! Our book is at once a practical tool for the visiting climber and an expression of our passion for this place, its people and the beautiful limestone cliffs where we have spent much of the past 5 years. The guidebook details 9 separate climbing sites and hundreds of routes around the West Bank.
Help us put Palestine on the international climbing map and get your own copy of the book!
West Bank gets its first rock climbing gym
(1 Apr 2016) LEAD IN:
The first centre for Palestinian rock climbers has opened in Ramallah.
It's a way for climbers to perfect their skills indoors before taking to the rocky hills of the West Bank.
STORY-LINE:
First a foot, then a hand: with each move he ascends a little further.
He's one of a number of climbing fans scaling the walls at the Palestinian Territories' first ever rock climbing gym.
This is 'bouldering', a climbing style that uses no ropes or harnesses.
Routes are marked by different coloured holds which indicate varying degrees of difficulty.
Marketing consultant Shadan Nasar has been climbing for ten months.
She enjoys the strategic thinking required to solve the climbing puzzles.
Climbing has become an important part of my life. Having this sport here is very nice because we face lots of pressures in our lives and for me yoga and climbing are so important. When you came here you learn how to solve the problems you face and this helps you in your life, she says.
Filmmaker Majdal Sobh attempts to tackle a route.
She took up the sport six months ago and this new facility is an opportunity to hone her skills indoors.
It's not always possible to climb in the mountains and outside, so it's good to have this place for training and for perfecting our climbing skills and to have a climbing community in Palestine, she says.
American Tim Bruns is a co-founder of Wadi Climbing.
We decided to open this gym because we were students in Jordan, studying Arabic, and when we came to Palestine and saw that there weren't a lot of recreational opportunities for young people and so we were kind of inspired by the Jordanian climbing community and figured that we could maybe do something similar here, he explains.
Wadi Climbing has been organising climbing trips around the hills of the West Bank since 2013.
But this new indoor gym means people can practice without taking a trip to the countryside.
And its founders hope it will help build a climbing community here.
Mohamed Qandeel began climbing seven months ago.
He's doing a few pull ups to build essential upper body strength.
Qandeel thinks the activity will appeal to lots of people.
It's something great and nice and I encourage a lot of people to try this as a sport and as a hobby, he says.
This sport does something to you inside; sometimes when I ask myself why I like it I don't have an answer, but it's beautiful and makes you want to do it more and more.
The gym has all the equipment climbers might need for a bouldering session, including the special shoes designed to keep toes hanging on to even the smallest ledge.
But there are plans to expand further.
Its wall is just a few metres high, restricted by the low building height.
The Wadi Climbing founders hope one day to find a premises that will accommodate a much higher rock face.
It would mean members could learn how to climb with ropes and harnesses.

My name is Zahi Shaked
In 2000 I became a registered liscenced tourist guide.
My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.
Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.
In order to fulfill this calling in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)
Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, glide over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and see the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

Gaza and West Bank football teams face off for first match in years
It was a moment 15 years in the making for thousands of football fans at the Yarmouk stadium.
Al-Shejaiya welcomed its West Bank opposition Ahli Al-Khalil to Gaza for the first time since 2000.
Israel granted the players permission to cross its territory for the first time in years. The Israeli blockade normally makes it difficult for Palestinians to move in and out of Gaza.
The match brought hopes of a single Palestinian league closer.

Jerusalem's Lifta faces threats from destruction, development
Commercialization of abandoned Arab village may be the only way to save the historical homes, but is the price too high?
Yacoub Odeh stands in front of the tanur, the community stone oven, next to his old house and closes his eyes. Our house was right here, said the 71-year-old former resident of Lifta, pointing to a pile of stones that forms the outline of the foundation of a house. As a little kid, I used to grab onto my mother's skirts when she went to make bread at the tanur. I'd hide in her skirts, and then my favorite thing in the world was to eat the fresh bread right out of the oven, with a little zaatar and olive oil.
Odeh was eight years old in 1947 when the residents of Lifta, an Arab village at the entrance to Jerusalem, fled. The strategic location of the village, climbing up a steep wadi and stretching towards the Old City, looking down on most of modern-day Jerusalem, meant it was one of the first villages to experience violence leading up to the siege of the city.
Today Lifta is in the middle of a different struggle, one that not only pits Arab history against Jewish history, but delves into the question of how much the city needs to preserve as it grows and develops.
In January, the Israel Lands Authority published a tender to build 212 luxury apartment villas and a hotel in the area of Lifta, turning the crumbling stone houses into lavish residences.
A coalition of activists successfully petitioned the Jerusalem District Court to halt the tender in March. The petition, filed by former Lifta residents, Rabbis for Human Rights, and Jafra, a Palestinian heritage organization, calls for the courts to freeze the bidding process and for the ILA to require that an independent monitoring organization complete a survey of the area to determine what should be preserved and what can be developed.
The activists argue that contractors performing a survey of the land, as is currently required, will be inadequate since the contractors have a commercial interest to preserve as little as possible. The court granted a temporary freeze until a trial is held to determine if the ILA can move forward with the bidding process. The court date at the Jerusalem District Court, which has been delayed by more than two months, is now set for July 7.
But the current legal impasse seems miles away from the peacefulness of Lifta, which has stood abandoned but largely intact for 64 years. It is the only completely abandoned Arab village that was not destroyed or inhabited by Jews after 1948, though its empty buildings have provided a haven for drug dealers, prostitutes and the homeless...

Israeli troops had entered the camp early on Wednesday in pursuit of a fugitive militant.
Residents began throwing stones at the troops, who responded with live fire, killing Ibrahim Sarhan.

Commentary for the Satellite Bible Atlas, Maps 1-8 & 1-9, Jerusalem Approaches and Benjamin Region
Claire Anastas, uitbaatster souvenirwinkel, Bethlehem (bezette Palestijnse gebieden)

Wadi Taab Oman
Wadi Taab in the Wilayat of Quriyat, A Sharqiya Region is one of the 12 most exceptional wadis of Oman. This is the most exciting wadi I have ever been to. This hike is much more adventurous than the Wadi Bani Awf (aka Snake Gorge) hike. It's just two kms long but takes a minimum of 7-8 hours to cross since we have to abseil at least six times and there are many challenging areas to maneuver.
I think Abu Mansoor is the first leader / guide to take twenty hikers together to this spot. According to him the usual size of a single group is around six to seven. We have even had six guys who don't know to swim and most of us are first timers to this place which have added more spice to the adventure.
So if you have the attitude and the right guy to guide you, any one can enjoy this paradise on earth....
