Magnificent Beating Retreat parade ceremony, lowering of flags, at Wagah Attari Border near Amritsar (30 kms), India. The ceremony is preceded by dance on Indian patriotic songs and drill by Border Security Force. Everyday over 10,000 visitors witness this parade in a stadium with a capacity of around 15000, the entry is free. The ceremony in summers starts at 6 PM and in winters 30 minutes earlier; bags should be kept in lockers and there is lot of option for food and drink. VIP seating area has the best seats to watch the ceremony. Women are allowed to participate in a dance event that goes on for 30 minutes on Indian patriotic Bollywood songs.
Atmosphere is charged with sense of pride and respect for the Nation with continuous chants of Vande Mataram and Bharat Mata Ke Jay. Hands down one of the best ceremony in India and is definitely a must visit, the electric atmosphere stays with you long after the event is over.

Pakistani FOOD PARADISE at Indian - Pakistani Border + Attari Wagah Flag Ceremony | Amritsar, India
2018 was an epic year of travel for me, and it began and ended in the same place: India. In January, I visited the country for the first time and fell in love with it so much that I knew I had to go back as soon as I possibly could. That opportunity came eleven months later, in November, when I spent nearly three weeks experiencing more of this country’s beautiful culture and outstanding food with my travel buddy Sam from Sam & Audrey.

Even though we had only been in Amritsar for less than a day, Sam and I already had tons of epic Amritsari adventures under our belt as our first day in the city continued with a trip to the Indian-Pakistani border with our friend Japneet to witness the Attari-Wagah flag ceremony and have an incredible Pakistani dinner at Border Restaurant!

Sam, Japneet, and I took the 30-minute car ride to the Indian-Pakistani border from Amritsar. On our way, we bought two Indian flags for 200 rupees each. We made it to the village of Attari, which lies directly across from the Pakistani village of Wagah on the other side of the border. It is here that the world-famous Attari-Wagah flag ceremony takes place. Japneet got us VIP tickets to the ceremony so we’d get to see it up close and personal. After a quick, scary moment where we realized we’d forgotten our passports, we went inside after we showed them our IDs. Bring your passports when you come here!
The venue itself is like a massive stadium, but I noticed that the Indian side is a lot bigger than the Pakistani side. Once we got to our seats, the crowd passed a gigantic Indian flag overhead. It was such an exciting way to kick off the lowering of the flags ceremony, which takes place daily from 5-5:30 p.m., dates back to 1959, and is a military practice that the security forces of India and Pakistan take part in. This ceremony, which is well-known around the world, symbolizes both the brotherhood between the two countries, as well as their friendly rivalry. The drills that take place during the border ceremony are known for their dancelike movement and showy high leg kicks. The energy of the crowd was electric! There is a lot to take in during the 30-minute ceremony, from the drills and the music to the enthusiastic shouting and chanting from the crowd.
After the ceremony ended, the three of us headed to Sarhad (which means border) Restaurant, for some authentic Pakistani food. We started with a Chicken Seekh Kebab and Dahi Ka Kebab, which is a fried patty with yogurt inside, along with some mint chutney. It was amazing! The mint chutney was fantastic and a little spicy, and the chicken was really soft, almost like poached chicken. The Dahi Ka Kebab looked like a potato fritter and had lots of herbs inside.
Next, we ordered garlic naan, Lahori Naan (which has onion seeds sprinkled on it), and Peshawari Naan (which contains dried fruits and nuts including raisins and almonds) along with three Pakistani curries: a mutton curry, a chicken curry, and a dal. They all looked incredible and each of them came with a chili pepper.
The mutton curry was super tender and juicy, and was falling off the bone! The chicken curry, especially its sauce, had so many flavors in it and the Lahori Naan was nice and crunchy and had a beautiful contrasting texture. Of course, I had to try one of the peppers…and yes, it seared off all of my taste buds!
Next was the dal, which was refreshing and didn’t have a ton of spices in it. Then I tried the Peshawari Naan with the chicken curry. The naan was sweet and perfect with the chicken curry! I honestly can’t say enough about Indian sauces. They get it right every single time!
And finally, we had dessert: Lahori Khalifa Khatai with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, and all of it drizzled with Khalifa syrup. The biscuits were dense and super nutty and also contained cashews and pistachios. The Khalifa tasted a lot like chocolate! I never would have known it wasn’t chocolate if Japneet hadn’t told me!

Wagah Border parade is a must visit tourist destination in Amritsar. Lowering of flags is done daily evening by security forces of India and Pakistan.Thousands of visitors travel here to experience live views of Wagah border Parade.

From India side BSF guards the border and they perform the parade drill which is watched live by thousands of people every day before sun set.

Wagah border is 27 kms from Amrtisar, it takes about 1 hour to reach there through a taxi or public vehicle.
Few tips if you are planning visit to wagah to watch retreat ceremony:
1. Reach Wagah border by 3.30 pm, so you get sitting space, there are more than 30k to 40k people who go there to watch parade.
2. If you want to visit Attari then go one hour in advance, you will need to go only 2 kms out of the way, this can be a good day out by adding Attari railway station to your visit plan.
3. Carry water bottle along, you may feel thirsty especially during summer time.
4. Mobile phone jammers are there, you will not be able to connect with anyone on call, when you are at Wagah border.
5. Security check: There is huge level of security check you will need to pass through so be patient and do not carry anything that may be objectionable.
6. Parking- you can travel by your own vehicle, there is sufficient parking space available near wagah border for travellers.
7. Wagah Parade timings: These differ from month to month, like winters it starts early and in summers little late, check the details before you move to border to watch the parade.
I also visited Attari railway station before going to Wagah, Samjohta express that goes to Pakistan passes through Attari railway station. Visiting Attari was a pleasant experience and a lifetime experience too.

Patriotism ran high as border guards of the neighboring countries took goose-steps, shook hands brusquely across the borderline amid loud cheers from spectators on either side. Patriotic songs blaring out of speakers kept the spectators pumped. Every year thousands of people attend the Beating Retreat ceremony on the Wagah-Attari Border in Punjab.

Wagah Attari Border antics - the tallest soldiers from both sides march stridently at both ends of the border, to impress and frighten the other side! The Wagah border closing ceremony or 'lowering of the flags' ceremony is a daily military practice that the Border Security Force of India and Pakistan Rangers have jointly followed since 1959. This ceremony takes place every evening before sunset at the Wagah border, which as part of the Grand Trunk Road was the only road link between these two countries before the opening of the Aman Setu in Kashmir in 1999.
The ceremony starts with a blustering parade by the soldiers from both the sides, and ends up in the perfectly coordinated lowering of the two nations' flags. It is called the beating retreat border ceremony on the international level. One infantryman or Jawan stands at attention on each side of the gate. As the sun sets, the iron gates at the border are opened and the two flags are lowered simultaneously. The flags are folded and the ceremony ends with a retreat that involves a brusque handshake between soldiers from either side, followed by the closing of the gates again. India and Pakistan not being on good terms, the soldiers from both sides try to outdo each other with exaggerating March and parades. The spectacle of the ceremony attracts many visitors from both sides of the border, as well as international tourists. In October 2010, Major General Yaqub Ali Khan of the Pakistan Rangers decided that the aggressive aspect of the ceremonial theatrics should be toned down
The India--Pakistan Border, known locally as the International Border (IB), is the international boundary between India and Pakistan that demarcates the Indian states of Punjab, Rajasthan and Gujarat from the Pakistani provinces of Punjab and Sindh. Pakistan borders India in the east. The border resulted from the Partition of India in 1947, which resulted in the two states of India and (West and East) Pakistan. The Line of Control (LoC) separates The Indian administered Jammu and Kashmir from Pakistan administered Azad Kashmir.
Wagah, the ceremonial point of crossing between India and Pakistan lies along this border between the Indian city of Amritsar and the Pakistani city of Lahore, and is within close distance of both cities' urban sprawl. Wagah is the only road border crossing between Pakistan and India, and lies on the Grand Trunk Road between the cities of Amritsar, Punjab, India and Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan. Wagah itself is a village through which the controversial Radcliffe Line, the boundary demarcation line dividing India and Pakistan upon the Partition of India, was drawn. The village was divided by independence in 1947. Today, the eastern half of the village remains in the Republic of India while the western half is in Pakistan. It is particularly known for the elaborate Wagah border ceremony that happens at the border gate before sunset each day.

INDIA TO PAKISTAN - Crossing the Wagah Border on Foot Solo!
To start my Pakistan trip I crossed over the Wagah Border from India into Pakistan as a British female travelling solo.

I had to wait in Amritsar for a few days whilst my vis was approved. I stayed at GoStops Amritsar Hostel which I recommend.
The day after my visa for Pakistan was approved I took a taxi from Amritsar to the border which in the morning with no traffic took 40 minutes. The Wagah Border opens at 10:00am so don't get there before then, but don't cross the border too late either as it closes at 5:00pm because of the Wagh Border Ceremony which happens every night!
My taxi dropped me off at the Passenger Terminal in India where I got my passport stamped out of India and went through Indian Customs. Then I had to wait for a bus to take me from the India Passport terminal to the Wagah Border Ceremony Stadium and where you cross the border.
This was totally surreal as I had watched the Wagah Border from the Indian side just the day before, and now I was crossing the Wagah Border on foot!
Both the Indian Soldiers and the Pakistani Soldiers needed to check my passport either side of the border line and asked me some questions about why I was in Pakistan but I said for tourism which was fine!
The Pakistan immigration is in walking distance from the ceremony building on the right. I had an e-visa for Pakistan which was processed there, they asked me a few more questions but I was stamped into Pakistan and free to head to Lahore.
I got a taxi from outside the passport building into Lahore from the Wagah Border which took 1.5 hours because of traffic. I stayed at MaryLeena Hotel Gulburg in Lahore which I would recommend for cheap Lahore accommodation!
I feel so so lucky to be able to cross the Wagah Border, especially as a British female and it was the British Rule that put the border up. I love both countries and can't wait to see Pakistan!

On 4th dec, 2017 we visited the wagha Border. It is great Ceremony and you will feel proud to be an Indian. You can go there by Autorickshaw / private car / Bus . we went there by auto rickshaw which costs Rs 800 for Full booking and Rs 100 / person on Share basis.
