It’s day 17 on New Zealand’s BIGGEST Gap Year and today we are exploring the city of Hamilton and the Waikato Museum!
We begin the day walking along the Waikato River Trail – a beautiful walk beside the Waikato River. We arrive at a free activity in Hamilton: the Waikato Museum. The Waikato Museum is full of Maori culture and history. We check out some awesome exhibitions about the Maori New Year, as well as a mix of contemporary and traditional Maori artwork.
After having a look around the Waikato Museum, we hit the streets of Hamilton finding some cool parks and squares along the way, as well as Casabella Lane – well worth checking out for it’s European vibes.
Our day ends by hanging out in the Backpackers Central Hamilton. Just another awesome day backpacking in New Zealand!

Te Whare Waka o Te Winika - Gallery 6 Free entry
The majestic Te Winika, a 200 year-old carved waka taua (Maaori war canoe) was collectively built by Ngaati Tipa of Tuakau, Ngaati Maru of Hauraki and Ngaati Mahanga of the western coastline of the Waikato.
Te Winika's history is a story of Tainui and the King movement. During the tumultuous era of the New Zealand Land Wars, Te Winika experienced the subjugation of the Waikato tribes, and this once proud flagship of royalty was dismantled, partially concealed and left to deteriorate in the mud at Port Waikato.
In the 1930s, Te Winika became a symbol of the Kiingitanga and the waka renaissance led by the Kaahui Ariki (Royal Sovereign) and, in particular Te Puea Herangi who steered the restoration of Te Winika. Te Winika was restored by a team of carvers led by Ranui Maupakanga, a man already in his nineties and his apprentices Rawiri Tamainu and Ropata Wirihana.
Piri Poutapu and Inia Te Wiata were carving students at the time, who researched and carved the bow, figurehead, sternpost and sides.
On 18 March 1938, the refurbished and very elegant Te Winika, complete with new carvings ferried the Governor General Lord Galway and Lady Galway along the Waikato River to open Turongo House.
Te Winika was refurbished again in 1972 by Piri Poutapu and his carvers.
Te Winika again faithfully served Maaori royalty until she was gifted to Hamilton city in 1973 by the Maaori Queen, Dame Te Atairangikaahu, as a gesture of harmony and goodwill. On 8 July 1973 Te Winika embarked on her final voyage on Waikato River to Waikato Museum Te Whare Taonga o Waikato.
In 1986, the waka taua was restored to its original 1938 condition. The people appointed to the project were the descendants of Te Winika’s original crew members, carvers and canoe builders.
In 1987 Te Winika took a final journey from the former museum on London Street to the current Waikato Museum on Grantham Street.
In August 2015, a restoration of the waka was completed by Tainui carvers: Inia Te Wiata Snr, Inia Te Wiata Jnr, Whatihua Herangi, Renata Te Wiata, Wikuki Kingi, Iriwhata Tekata, Wikaraka Henare, Ripi Joseph and Hipirini Te Kata.

The Classic Museum - Hamilton NZ: Classic Restos Series 35
On the North Island of New Zealand is one of the top tourist attractions in the region. Local Hamilton businessman Tom Andrews from an early age had a fascination with cars and the Chevrolet Corvette, in particular, his expanding collection of classic cars, bikes and motoring memorabilia over the years saw his home became too small (I think we can all relate to this ). The solution was to build a purpose-built building to house his collection, over two stories that now displays over 100 classic cars, bikes and his extensive collection of motoring memorabilia, even the foyer of the building is a replica of a US 50's Diner.
Fletch talks with museum curator Stan Richardson about the collection and walks through the museum, highlighting cars that are rare examples and those that have a unique story. A massive collection of classics from around the world and worthy of a visit next time you're in New Zealand.

Artists vie for $25K prize being announced at Waikato Museum on Friday.
The 2019 National Contemporary Art Award - worth $25,000 and one of the most coveted prizes in the New Zealand art world - will be announced at a ceremony on Friday night at Waikato Museum. Over the past week 52 finalist works have arrived at the museum prior to judging for the award, which this year marks its 20th anniversary. After the announcement of the winning work, an exhibition of all the finalists will open to the public on Saturday. They range from a 58-second continuous video loop to photographic art prints, and from an installation that incorporates LEDs (light emitting diodes) and another incorporating barrier mesh, to somewhat more traditional paintings in oils and acrylics. The artists' descriptions for their creations reveal an array of inspirations: From re-interpreting the New Zealand landscape to representational works about social and environmental issues, including one artist's response to recent comments by Destiny Church leader Brian Tamaki. This year's judge Fiona Pardington said her selection of the finalists was personal and intuitive. After nearly turning down the responsibility for judging the award, I changed my mind, because this award is a pivotal event for encouraging and celebrating new ideas and new methods of artistic expression in New Zealand. Regarded globally for her photography, Pardington was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2017. In 2016, she became the first New Zealand visual artist to be named a Knight (Chevalier) in the Order of Arts and Letters (Chevalier de l'ordre des Arts et des Lettres) by the French government. Of Ngaai Tahu, Kati Mamoe, Ngaati Kahungunu, and Scottish (Clan Cameron of Erracht) descent, Pardington has received many fellowships, residencies, awards, and grants during her career. They include the Moët et Chandon Fellowship (France) in 1991-92, the Frances Hodgkins Fellowship in both 1996 and 1997, the Ngaai Tahu residency at Otago Polytechnic in 2006 and both the Quai Branly Laureate award, La Résidence de Photoquai, and the Arts Foundation Laureate Award in 2011. Tompkins Wake, one of New Zealand's leading law firms, and nationally-renowned architects Chow:Hill have co-sponsored the award since 2014 and 2015 respectively. Phillip had a two weeks school holiday in April, so we decided to revisit Hamilton city. It took one and a half hours to get there from Papakura. We visited the Hamilton gardens, Waikato museum and the Hamilton lake domain.

The city of Hamilton is located on the banks of the mighty Waikato River, which is best appreciated from one of the scenic riverside walks or boat cruise. The visually stunning Hamilton Gardens are webbed by paths that journey through a gallery of themed gardens from grand Italy to tranquil Asia. Other city highlights include the Waikato Museum which provides an insight into the areas rich history and the Hamilton Zoo, which provides native birds with enormous freedom in a walk-through free flight aviary. The Zoo also offers visitors 'Face2Face' encounters with exotic animals.
Hamilton's central precinct is easy to walk and packed with cafes, restaurants, a casino and bars where you can wine, dine and dance the night away. The city is also well known as a destination for national and international events from sporting matches such as rugby, cricket, netball, rowing and boxing to concerts and festivals. Annual events such as the National Agricultural Fieldays and Balloons over Waikato festival draw crowds from far and wide.
