On an unseasonably warm day January I ventured into the Wainfleet Bog. I had been intending to visit the bog for many years but just never found the time to make it there. The bog is rich in history, having been mined for peat for nearly 100 years. In addition to it's industrial history it also has it's own history dating back 12,000 years to when the last ice age left us. The bog was once 20 times the size it is today, and has some very unique wildlife in there. Not only is it home to the only venomous snake in Ontario but it was recently confirmed that there are cougars living in there, thought to be extinct in this area since the 1880s.

However I saw no wildlife this day. Well that's not true, I saw one lone bird, several empty nests, deer droppings and the massacred remains of what I believe was a turkey vulture. I would sooner suspect that to be the result of coyotes than a puma though. Other than that, it was completely barren and dead in there. It's amazing how lifeless a place can look in a snowless winter but the fact that it was a bog made it even more strange to me.

I went to visit the Wainfleet Bog a few weeks after a fire slowly burned it's way through it. Despite the devistation I would actually say the bog is now more accessible for people to hike it, perhaps some good can come out of this :)
