Wairere Falls outside of Matamata, New Zealand
I didn’t know what to expect for this Wairere Falls hike. It was recommended on the DoC website, is the highest waterfall in New Zealand's North Island and was a half day walk near where I was staying outside of Matamata.
The start of the track is at the end of a narrow country road. You could see the waterfall in the distance and looked an impressive size.

New Zealand's Piha Beach, Putaruru Blue Spring, Wairere Falls and Bridal Veil Falls
During our road trip to Wellington, we took a detour and visited some of NZ North Island's most well known beach, spring and waterfalls.
Piha is New Zealand's most famous surf beach. It is known for it's unique black sand with awesome rock formations.
Wairere Falls in Okauia is the highest waterfall in New Zealand's North Island. It is 153 meters in two steps. The track weaves its way through moss covered rocks and tree roots. The walk is 5 kms return or 3- 4 hrs via same track.
Te Waihou Walkway in the mighty Waikato Region is home to the famous Blue Spring. The water is internationally acclaimed as the purest. The walk to the springs follows a track alongside the Waihou River, and features small waterfalls and native bushes. The Blue Spring walk takes about 1 1/2 hours each way.
Bridal Veil Falls or Waireinga is 55 meters high and is located in Raglan. It is an attractive easy walk through native forest and will take you 10 mins to reach the base of the falls from the top and vice versa.

Natural Soundscape of water running at Wairere Falls, Okauia, New Zealand.
Wairere Falls is the highest waterfall in the north island of New Zealand ( 153m ) It plunges over two steps and then follows through down a mountain valley. This video recording was done much further down the leading stream. In this area there is many locations of waterfalls with many boulders and large ancient rocks scattered. The forest has a bush track leading up to the top of the mountain ridge from where the water flows.
