Lost World 7Hr Epic 2018
The Ultimate. NZ's Biggest Caving Adventure. Starts with a massive 100m abseil into the system as per Nat Geo and then the rest of the day exploring the underground river passage. Fantastic Glowworms and multitudes of cave formations; fossils as well as optional challenges.
Discover Waitomo Glowworm Caves | New Zealand
Discover the Waitomo Glowworm Caves, New Zealand's natural highlight.
World renowned and a magnet for both local and overseas visitors, the Waitomo Glowworm Caves occupy a high placing in the New Zealand vacation wish-list.
The glow worm, Arachnocampa luminosa, is unique to New Zealand. Thousands of these tiny creatures radiate their unmistakable luminescent light as our expert guides provide informative commentary on the Caves' historical and geological significance.
Waitomo Glowworm Caves are a must see for any traveller. Enjoy the world famous boat ride under thousands of magical glowworms and become a part of over 120 years of cultural and natural history.
Ruakuri Cave is Waitomo's longest underground guided walking tour.
According to Maori legend, Ruakuri Cave (rua meaning den, and kuri meaning dog) was first discovered 400-500 years ago by a young Maori hunting for birds. He was attacked by wild dogs just outside the original cave entrance. Re-opened in 2005, this cave is now an amazing example of engineering and natural cave structure.
Ruakuri Cave offers a captivating blend of Waitomo's most compelling subterranean experiences. Journey down through the spectacular spiral entrance, and marvel at the softly folding shawl-like limestone formations and crystal tapestries. Hear the distant thunder of the subterranean waterfalls and get up close to the glowworms.
With clever and innovative design, Ruakuri Cave has full wheelchair and pushchair access.
Aranui Cave is set in the Ruakuri Scenic Reserve, 5 minutes drive from the Waitomo Glowworm Caves. It is named after Ruruku Aranui, the local Maori man who first discovered this previously hidden gem back in 1910.
Aranui Cave has a natural cave entrance and is the smallest and most delicate of Waitomo's three main caves. As a dry cave without a river running through it, it houses very little life past its entrance.
However, just inside the entrance is a colony of native New Zealand cave wetas and further into the cave is the most beautiful collection of stalactites, stalagmites, flowstones and decorative formations.
Lost World Four Hours

Waitomo's Lights - Avatar in Real Life - 4k
Waitomo is the centre of the universe for glow worms in New Zealand. With cave, boat and black water rafting tours, there are plenty of glow worm adventures. This time-lapse video was a made as a follow-up to our previous glowworm video Glowworms in Motion ( which won the New Zealand Geographic Photographer of the Year - Timelapse award. We shot this one mainly for the love of spending time underground beneath the twinkling lights of glow worm galaxies. We initially thought the 60 hours spent in caves to make the first video would satisfy us but as we are finding out there is something addictive about underground photography. The more difficult the better. This one took 30 hours underground and over 3000 pictures were taken in that time. We hope you enjoy it!
To have an epic glowworm adventure yourself, head on over to and check out all the cool options.
To read the story of how we first started filming glowworms check out this blog:
The story behind this video is here:
Special thanks to Jenna for having the patience to spend hours underground with me and also Ilya Inov for subbing in for Jenna at one point to get the last sequences. Ilya may have actually enjoyed his 16 hours underground more than me. He posts his photography work here:
Also, a shout out to Mr. Glowworm Cave (Logan Doull) for making sure we didn't get lost underground and protecting us from the eels ;)
About the Series:
Living a Kiwi Life is about a Canadian couple (me and Jenna) who have lived in Canada all our lives and made the decision to move to New Zealand having never gone there before. We quit our jobs, sold our houses and cars and left everything we knew to explore an unknown.

The Lost World 4hr Waitomo Adventures with Antipodean Luxury Travel
See why Tom Cruise did this trip 4 times! The Lost World Adventure is spectacular! Abseil 100m into the Lost World tomo (vertical entrance shaft) followed by a dry caving adventure as you explore the gigantic vaults of the Mangapu Cave system.
Surprisingly gentle, but an amazing “head trip”. he descent takes around 30 minutes of the total 4 hours required. Abseil slowly alongside your instructor who although on a separate rope provides information, reassurance ...and a backup safety tether. Imagine freehanging in a massive void..bouncing a bit & turning because of the sheer length of the rope. Look around into upper levels of the cave and giant spagatites (look like giant green hands growing out of the walls). Wierd plants struggle to cling to the sheer walls and all the while the roar of the Mangapu river echoes up from caverns far below. One guide looks after up to 4 people - who all make their unforgettable descent together down through the surreal mists and eventually landing in the base of this massive cavern.
Once down, take in the awesome views before starting on an even more amazing trip back to the surface. Climb over massive slabs of rock and a series of ladders. See excellent glowworms and huge flowstone formations. Get in touch with the team at Antipodean Luxury Travel, to arrange your next, personalised trip. We love to share special moments, people and places with our clients, so they can create magical memories and experience the freedom. Find out more at

New Zealand Waitomo Glow Worm caves & Black Water Rafting
I went on a weekend trip down to the Waitomo caves, located 2 hours south of Auckland, New Zealand to see the incredible glow worms. I explored two caves including the Ruakuri cave where you are allowed to take photos and videos, did some black water rafting and stayed overnight at the gorgeous Free Range Farmstay Air BnB.
Here's a recap of my weekend away. I took my mum along for the ride and yes she also took part in the black water rafting (and loved it)!!
